I have been using progressive lenses for years. I am a plus 5 diopter w a 1.5 to 2.0 add in each eye and have never ever ever had issues with the blurriness or transition issues between the differing fields.
I recently got myself a pair of progressive glasses, and how I wish I could return it even after few weeks of using it. I am not trying to discourage people from getting one, its all my based on my personal opinion and experience using them. First, progressive lens reduces your field of vision. You have to constantly turn and twist your head to find the sweet spot. You have to aim with your nose at the object you want to focus on to be able to see clearly 🤣 The area around the corner will always be distorted. If you try to look through the distortion, you will feel giddy. Its like a light censor filter applied around the lens. Second, you wont be able to do fast paced activities, you will feel motion sickness trying to do sports. Imagine turning on motion blur in video games and you will get the picture. The only way I can reduce it is to close my eyes when I try to turn. Third, driving with progressive lenses are so annoying, You have to turn your head to look at your rear and side mirror constantly. Fourth, my judgement of distance feels off. Things appear to be further than it should. Be careful when you try to use an escalator. I tripped several times. Fifth, most people read by tilting their head a little and look straight at the book. They don't move their head upwards and look downwards to read, do they? It looks unnatural to read that way. I am seriously considering getting another pair of glasses with a single vision. I have so much regret spending so much money on this progressive lenses. It strain my eye more that it is advertised. They are not cheap. Beware of opticians trying to sell you features that you don't need.
Thank you for your comment I got mine about 2 weeks ago I've been back to my doctor they tried to adjust my frames I just cannot read correctly nobody holds their phone or a paper against their chests and looks down usually with cell phone we hold them out arms length body and kind of of look up, I almost got in an accident yesterday pulling out onto a busy Street cuz I can't freaking turn my head that far so I get a Clear Vision, I have a very slight prescription for seeing far and my reading prescription isn't too bad either oh, I'm taking these damn things back Monday and either getting bifocals or just a pair of light prescriptions and I guess I'll have to use my $7 readers oh, we shouldn't have to work this hard just to see that is the purpose of the glasses! And writing this post is taking forever cuz I keep going back and correcting it progressive lenses suck God bless you if you can wear them I don't think I can I've got constant eye irritation and headaches and that's the purpose of getting glasses to help soothe those problems as well as see correctly
Physically an impossibility with current technology. The curves must be blended to create the add power, this blend zone is what creates the blur. Different designs manage where and how this distortion is created 🙂
FYI: if you have presbyopia and don’t have your glasses handy, you can just roll your hand into a fist and look through your fist like a telescopic (or microscope), and you can read just fine.
"Pinhole effect" reduced aperture = increased depth of field 😁 👌. You can also use your pen and punch a hole in a piece of paper or business card to do the same 😎 great stuff and welcome to the channel!!!!
I am 33 and my prescription is -2.75, I got the zeiss smartlife lenses a few months ago. I feel they are similar to progressive lenses where the bottom of the lense feel blurred and upper side feels fine but have some weird blurr spots all around. They feel very weird overall to wear. I actually feel very comfortable wearing my regular -2.75 glasses. Do you recommend the smartlife lenses versus regular ones though?
I absolutely do not. A regular progressive works far better and so do regular single vision lenses. Hoya has by far the best anti fatigue lens as it doesn’t deploy older basic multifocal technology and is designed more like an ultex lens (great stuff).
I could almost take the plunge and try progressives but not quite. With my lined trifocals the vetical depth of the intermediate prescription is 7 mm, I believe. This enables me to depend on a consistent vertical depth of 7 mm with no change for my intermediate vision. If the progressive lenses keep progressing in strength as you look vertically deeper down the lens towards the reading section will it stay consistent enough to encompass the same 7 mm vertical depth for intermediate vision that the lined trifocal provides?
Generally today progressive lenses are designed with 3 proprietary zones that are determined in location and power by the design. (In general terms these are usually 0 add, 50-60% add and 90-100% add with a faster ramp up between these zones so it’s largely small and continuous. These zones vary even with the same lens name for different prescriptions and fitting parameters, so it would be extremely difficult to say X lens will give you 7mm of intermediate zone like trifocals. (Goodness certainly the varilux X wont) 😂
Hi, I got my first ever pair of varifocals yesterday and I was very surprised that I took to them immediately! After hearing negative opinions from a lot of relatives/friends I was expecting to have to get used to walking around in a goldfish bowl for a couple of weeks lol. I'm wondering Is it quite rare for someone new to varifocals to have no issues with them? I've been watching a few of your videos today, very helpful 🙂
Absolutely not rare at all 🙂. "The complainers are louder than those happy". As it always goes. Incidentally the same is true for this video, very few happy with their lenses will land here 🙂. I have had less than a handful of unhappy wearers in my ~10+ years fitting them. With good measurements and design selection it goes over well the vast majority of the time 😎, of course throw in a slathering of a proper understanding of what to expect with the use of the lenses and especially now where people are getting into them at lower and lower add powers for their first pair and its only easier from here on 😁

I defiantly can not wear these lenses I had tramactic brain injury few years ago and my eyes are hard to focus on things sometimes I tried they gave me a headache
TBI definitely is a special case with specific needs. It would be EXTREMELY difficult to make a progressive lens comfortable for you due to visual gaze restrictions as well as any areas of vision that may be entirely gone :(

second comment: I wear multifocal contact lenses and always have an up to date pair of progressive lenses available for when my contact lenses need to be cleaned or eyes need a reprieve from contacts... I am a +5.00 give or take fluctuation of .50 diopter per year. Problem: I hate hate hate hyperopia. The world is geared to myopia. I would rather have small eyes than large bug eyes and heavy glasses that sit on my nose. When it is time to pick a frame...I have personal visions of throwing myself on the grand and kicking my feet as I protest inwardly the thick glasses. Yes I do get 1.74 lenses and try to pick light weight small frames. I am always hopeful at the time of purchase...but it always ends the same....Large and in charge magnified eyes and glasses that feel heavy after 5 hours of wear. What miracles do u have available in your bag of tricks and years of experience. Make me a believer...Fix my neurotic issues with bug eye magnifying glasses
I saw the first comment about your lenses, kudos, that's how progressives are intended to work when everything goes right, bonus points for those high plus short eyes always having limited range of rotation making peripheral blur almost non existent anyways 😝. Now onto this one. You're 100% correct in everything being geared towards myopia, but more by physics. For starters your material... just no. There is 0 advantage of 1.74 at this power unless frame selection is piss poor, and you are only ADDING thickness and weight. 1.67 is more than sufficient. Increased refraction of high index materials also only serves to increase the magnification. Minimum vertex, lower refractive index, and digital lenticulation (reduces the surface area of the optics and thus the area of increased thickness is shrunk as well) in a good acetate frame with a saddle bridge (no keyholes, no partial rims) would serve you well. I have a +9 with 3 add customer that refuses to go anywhere else for glasses 🥂 😝.... p.s. he also isn't in 1.74.... 1.6 in fact. There's also more that goes into the frame fit to create proper balance so all weight isn't on the nose, but thats some of the voodoo that seems to be lost on all opticians these days.
I just ordered Progressive lenses on my new glasses. I am extremely near sighted (-8.0) but only slightly far sighted ( Does not cause any problems in day to day) But I was beginning to suffer from eye strain on computers at work and the optometrist said progressives would be a good option. I just wonder with such a strong far distance prescription and low near distance if distortion at the edges would be reduced.
A great question! If your add power is still a 1.75 or less, the answer is actually yes! Especially if you opted for a really good lens (and hopefully the opticians were on point too!) I do agree with your optom, the signs of digital eye strain are an excellent reason to go ahead and get into a progressive, partially because it relieves it, and almost equally because it's a much easier time to adjust to 😁 good luck with your new lenses, I suspect you'll do great!!! Higher myopes tend to love progressives for a few reasons 🙂

It's interesting that the place where I'm getting my progressives shows a diagram where the blurry zone is much more narrow......can one buy lenses with narrower blurry zones?

Sam's Club optical tells me they do not have various levels of Progressive lenses with less or more blurry peripheral vision. My eye insurance "Spectera" offers 5 different "Tiers" of Progressive lenses. For tier 1, I would have to pay only $10 out of pocket; for any of the other tiers $75. Of course I want the best, so I paid the extra $75 for tier 5. Would you suggest that there actually would be no difference between "Tier 1" or "Tier 5"? I have zero (PL) sphere correction in one eye and only -0.50 in the other. Most of the correction for me is the astigmatism. I'm wondering with so little sphere correction whether "Tier 1" ($10) would have been sufficient and would have provided the exact same, equal width, blurry space as "Tier 5." I despise the lies and deception in U.S. marketing.
The cylinder correction has more to do with lens design, but for starters, specters is doing you no favors and those tiers are laughable at best. The huge range of lenses that fall into tier 5 with not even close to the same level of design tech is absolutely a joke, not to mention the lab they'll have surfacing the job to get their "discounted" rate will affect it as well. There is a reason I don't take insurance at my shop 😶.
When you were talking about the various powers at various portions of the lens, it would have been helpful if you had splashed the percentage of magnification as textual numbers. That info goes by too fast.

Physics. It's the blend zone used to increase the curvature of the lens towards the bottom to create the plus power for near. It's not just a matter of putting whatever power is wanted in any one place as essilor advertising and their "point by point honeycomb" might have you believe. The concept isn't totally wrong, but it's not as wild as put any power at any place on the lens so much as being bale to manipulate HOW that blur zone acts... think if it more like controlling bokeh of a camera lens :)
Hi! I have a question though. I'm using progressive lenses (because I'm experiencing eyestrain, so I was recommended to use "computer glasses") but I'm also nearsighted. Does it not confuse my eye??🤔 I'm still struggling adjusting to progressive lenses coz when I read it's just zoomed in haha. Not sure but that's the prescription when I last visited my clinic. Hope you'll notice my question, I cant find answers on google 😂 thanks!!
There are lenses made specifically for the computer that aren't full on progressives, those will be easier to work with.... but at any rate, depending on what your prescription is like it can take the brain some time to get use to the magnification of plus lenses (say you're a -0.50 but need a +1.00 for computer, it's tougher. There are tricks to make it easier to adjust to when making custom lenses of course 🙃. It can definitely be a struggle for lower myopes (nearsighted)

A month is far too long, I would speak with your eye doctor and/or optician. They'll have a better idea how to proceed with your full prescription and all of the information. A +.50 add would be more like an anti fatigue lens for early pre presbyopia just to cut some of the extra demand we place on our eyes now. These largely didn't exist until 4 years ago, so in that regard, you won't be hurting anything.
Progressive lenses and prism are another animal all together. Dedicated single vision pairs are best as they allow tuning of the prism for each task specifically. Progressives can work ok, but won't provide the best solution. I find most often vertical prism works best (up/down) and horizontal can provide success for some (I have one client with 14D horizontal in a progressive, so there are ALWAYS exceptions). More often than not horizontal prism will vary from distance to near, and that change in prism can not be created in a progressive at this time.

@@Queen_Bites All progressives are not created equal. Its best to discuss the options with your eye doctor when resolving for your prescriptions. Transitions are top brand of photochromic lenses. They will help reduce discomfort with sunlight, block ultraviolet light and some high energy bluelight from digital devices. But Transitions are not really a substitute for progressive lenses. PS: Lenses with prisms would be ordered in office rather than online to allow for better fitting and quality assurance.
Not only have I heard of it. I’ve used it. Incredible tech but not fully out or ready for production just yet. I just happened to have a case that fit their needs for a trial perfectly 😎. My customer was blown away with our results with them. At this time I only know of one specialty lab producing them and there are still QC issues
Thank you for this excellent video. I wear lined trifocals and I like them very much. I have had no issues. I have considered moving to progressives but just can't quite make the move as yet. I blur in the periphery puts me off. I have heard some opticians say that lined trifocals are rarely prescribed these days and are on the way towards extinction. If so then I would end up with no choice but to change. What is your view on this?
If peripheral blue is your largest concern fight it to the death. Alternatively a carefully fit and designed Camber lens can do miracles for peripheral blur. Currently we're seeing an industry wide backup of all things lined, while I disagree lined will ever truly go extinct due to its widely applicable situations in all forms of work. Simply can't beat it for specific use cases and peripheral optics. We're getting there with progressives but not quite yet. The Camber is a reach in the right direction, and particularly hyperopia responds EXETEEMELY well to these lenses. Camber is a system of a specially made blank, and a specific surfacing algorithm that balances the curves from top to bottom... something no other progressive does, but you won't find these widely available, and not sold at all where the big brands are in most all cases.
@@ThatGlassesGuy03 Thanks. I've heard that bifocals will remain and just trifocals will disappear. I'm planning to give high level progressives a try. If it doesn't work I will return to trifocals and just hope they stick around a while. Someone said going back to bifocals playing with the add power the reading lens might work as well. Aside from the Camber are there big name lenses that have minimal distortion? I also would hope that progressives would focus the reading area large enough to encompass more than just a single narrow line of text. I have heard good things about Zeiss andone other I don't remember. Thanks.
Right?! Wish people were still wearing them during flu peaks. The flu season this year has been horrible in my city. I know more people sick right now personally than I knew with Covid all of 2020 😂
I watched this so I could get some extra feedback on the two lenses. I got the progressives this year, but I really don't like the fuzziness of the periphery. My doc told me it's "not normal" to not turn your head when you want to see something, but I beg to differ, as I tend to move my eyeballs everywhere first. If I really want to look, then my head follows. I'm glad you made mention of this. Now to determine if I'm going to switch to the bifocal or just wait an extra year and pull down my glasses to read clearly. 🤦♀️
I mean, if you consider technically constrained to a limited field of view so you must turn your head.. completely normal 🤣. It varies from person to person for sure, I'm a big eye mover, so I dread the day.... regardless, whatever route you go, good luck! They all have their own tradeoffs
I agree- Your doc is crazy- you can turn your eyeballs and see everything without having to actually move your head. With progressives I can’t check my peripheral and keep my head straight ahead while driving. It’s crazy that I have to move my entire head that way. We move our eyeballs all the time before moving one head.
These issues affect all progressive lenses. Some of the peripheral issues are reduced with digital freeform and adaptation can be sped... but at the end of the day the same rules apply 🥶.

In fact they don't work for reading. I'm lucky because at 62 I can read without glasses. Don't know how much longer my luck will last though. Lol

Why there must be a fuzzy peripheral part ? Isn't it possible to make it progressive over the whole width of the lens ?

A great question! If your add power is still a 1.75 or less, the answer is actually yes! Especially if you opted for a really good lens (and hopefully the opticians were on point too!) I do agree with your optom, the signs of digital eye strain are an excellent reason to go ahead and get into a progressive, partially because it relieves it, and almost equally because it's a much easier time to adjust to 😁 good luck with your new lenses, I suspect you'll do great!!! Higher myopes tend to love progressives for a few reasons 🙂

It's interesting that the place where I'm getting my progressives shows a diagram where the blurry zone is much more narrow......can one buy lenses with narrower blurry zones?

Sam's Club optical tells me they do not have various levels of Progressive lenses with less or more blurry peripheral vision. My eye insurance "Spectera" offers 5 different "Tiers" of Progressive lenses. For tier 1, I would have to pay only $10 out of pocket; for any of the other tiers $75. Of course I want the best, so I paid the extra $75 for tier 5. Would you suggest that there actually would be no difference between "Tier 1" or "Tier 5"? I have zero (PL) sphere correction in one eye and only -0.50 in the other. Most of the correction for me is the astigmatism. I'm wondering with so little sphere correction whether "Tier 1" ($10) would have been sufficient and would have provided the exact same, equal width, blurry space as "Tier 5." I despise the lies and deception in U.S. marketing.
The cylinder correction has more to do with lens design, but for starters, specters is doing you no favors and those tiers are laughable at best. The huge range of lenses that fall into tier 5 with not even close to the same level of design tech is absolutely a joke, not to mention the lab they'll have surfacing the job to get their "discounted" rate will affect it as well. There is a reason I don't take insurance at my shop 😶.

When you were talking about the various powers at various portions of the lens, it would have been helpful if you had splashed the percentage of magnification as textual numbers. That info goes by too fast.

Why can't the blur area be changed to distance viewing?
Physics. It's the blend zone used to increase the curvature of the lens towards the bottom to create the plus power for near. It's not just a matter of putting whatever power is wanted in any one place as essilor advertising and their "point by point honeycomb" might have you believe. The concept isn't totally wrong, but it's not as wild as put any power at any place on the lens so much as being bale to manipulate HOW that blur zone acts... think if it more like controlling bokeh of a camera lens :)
Hi! I have a question though. I'm using progressive lenses (because I'm experiencing eyestrain, so I was recommended to use "computer glasses") but I'm also nearsighted. Does it not confuse my eye??🤔 I'm still struggling adjusting to progressive lenses coz when I read it's just zoomed in haha. Not sure but that's the prescription when I last visited my clinic. Hope you'll notice my question, I cant find answers on google 😂 thanks!!
There are lenses made specifically for the computer that aren't full on progressives, those will be easier to work with.... but at any rate, depending on what your prescription is like it can take the brain some time to get use to the magnification of plus lenses (say you're a -0.50 but need a +1.00 for computer, it's tougher. There are tricks to make it easier to adjust to when making custom lenses of course 🙃. It can definitely be a struggle for lower myopes (nearsighted)

A month is far too long, I would speak with your eye doctor and/or optician. They'll have a better idea how to proceed with your full prescription and all of the information. A +.50 add would be more like an anti fatigue lens for early pre presbyopia just to cut some of the extra demand we place on our eyes now. These largely didn't exist until 4 years ago, so in that regard, you won't be hurting anything.

I have a eye prism problem. And I'm afraid to have a progressive lenses. Do you recommend progressive or not?
Progressive lenses and prism are another animal all together. Dedicated single vision pairs are best as they allow tuning of the prism for each task specifically. Progressives can work ok, but won't provide the best solution. I find most often vertical prism works best (up/down) and horizontal can provide success for some (I have one client with 14D horizontal in a progressive, so there are ALWAYS exceptions). More often than not horizontal prism will vary from distance to near, and that change in prism can not be created in a progressive at this time.

@@Queen_Bites All progressives are not created equal. Its best to discuss the options with your eye doctor when resolving for your prescriptions.
Transitions are top brand of photochromic lenses. They will help reduce discomfort with sunlight, block ultraviolet light and some high energy bluelight from digital devices.
But Transitions are not really a substitute for progressive lenses.
PS: Lenses with prisms would be ordered in office rather than online to allow for better fitting and quality assurance.
Have you ever heard of Natural Accommodation Lens (NAL) branded as OmniLux by QLDS? They claim to be a new and better type of progressive lens.
Not only have I heard of it. I’ve used it. Incredible tech but not fully out or ready for production just yet. I just happened to have a case that fit their needs for a trial perfectly 😎. My customer was blown away with our results with them. At this time I only know of one specialty lab producing them and there are still QC issues

Thank you for this excellent video. I wear lined trifocals and I like them very much. I have had no issues. I have considered moving to progressives but just can't quite make the move as yet. I blur in the periphery puts me off. I have heard some opticians say that lined trifocals are rarely prescribed these days and are on the way towards extinction. If so then I would end up with no choice but to change. What is your view on this?
If peripheral blue is your largest concern fight it to the death. Alternatively a carefully fit and designed Camber lens can do miracles for peripheral blur. Currently we're seeing an industry wide backup of all things lined, while I disagree lined will ever truly go extinct due to its widely applicable situations in all forms of work. Simply can't beat it for specific use cases and peripheral optics. We're getting there with progressives but not quite yet. The Camber is a reach in the right direction, and particularly hyperopia responds EXETEEMELY well to these lenses. Camber is a system of a specially made blank, and a specific surfacing algorithm that balances the curves from top to bottom... something no other progressive does, but you won't find these widely available, and not sold at all where the big brands are in most all cases.

If it doesn't work I will return to trifocals and just hope they stick around a while. Someone said going back to bifocals playing with the add power the reading lens might work as well. Aside from the Camber are there big name lenses that have minimal distortion? I also would hope that progressives would focus the reading area large enough to encompass more than just a single narrow line of text. I have heard good things about Zeiss andone other I don't remember. Thanks.

I watched this so I could get some extra feedback on the two lenses. I got the progressives this year, but I really don't like the fuzziness of the periphery. My doc told me it's "not normal" to not turn your head when you want to see something, but I beg to differ, as I tend to move my eyeballs everywhere first. If I really want to look, then my head follows. I'm glad you made mention of this. Now to determine if I'm going to switch to the bifocal or just wait an extra year and pull down my glasses to read clearly. 🤦♀️
I mean, if you consider technically constrained to a limited field of view so you must turn your head.. completely normal 🤣. It varies from person to person for sure, I'm a big eye mover, so I dread the day.... regardless, whatever route you go, good luck! They all have their own tradeoffs
I agree- Your doc is crazy- you can turn your eyeballs and see everything without having to actually move your head.
With progressives I can’t check my peripheral and keep my head straight ahead while driving.
It’s crazy that I have to move my entire head that way.
We move our eyeballs all the time before moving one head.
This is still old progressive lens issues. I haven't seen any US videos on digital progressives.
These issues affect all progressive lenses. Some of the peripheral issues are reduced with digital freeform and adaptation can be sped... but at the end of the day the same rules apply 🥶.
@@ThatGlassesGuy03 Thank you. Any ideas on what type of glasses a person should have for let say needle work? A video might come in handy. Progressive don't work for needlework or hand sewing. In fact they don't work for reading. I'm lucky because at 62 I can read without glasses. Don't know how much longer my luck will last though. Lol

Custom progressives with lens tweaks or limed bifocals are GREAT for this type of application. Alternatively single vision lenses can be employed depending on the total poeer required and the range limits it comes with for the individual 🙂
