I discovered a Monolith in the Desert on Google Earth

  • A tall, reflective object in a desolate land appeared on Google Earth, leaving me wondering if it was the result of man, nature, or perhaps something else..?
I needed answers and the Monolith beckoned. I hiked far into the desolate wilderness and unique Geologic landscape.
When I finally gazed upon its true form, the origin of the Monolith was made clear.
If anyone could help confirm my suspicions about how this Monolith was created, or any other observations you made about the unique Geology of this area during the course of the video, I would love to read it in the comments.
Honestly, thank you all so much for watching this video. I have my absolute favorite Google Earth Discovery coming for you all next week.

Just found your channel. I am 72 years old and am loving your adventures. I especially loved your music choice on this one. Please be careful and be sure to let others know where you are going and when they should expect you back. Many people die in the wilderness. I live in Colorado and have great respect for the dangers in the mountains. I especially love the drone footage.

Great footage, I like when you pan around a rock or formation so we get a good view, very satisfying to my curiosity. Too many camera operators annoyingly turn away juuuust short of the interesting bit, or only show a single angle and zoom in and out all the time. The slow tilt/rotate/elevate really works because you see the actual perspective and depth. Well done.
As someone who lives in a flat, grassy country these landscapes are beautiful and terrifying.
Seeing those cracked rocks I would expect there to break off massive chunks all the time, but I have no idea how likely that even is.

The amazing effect of wind, water and temperature, over time, relentlessly chiseling solid rock into fantastic geometries, is stunning to behold.
All of this obvious activity set against the stillness and silence experienced by the observer in the moment seems paradoxical.
The fact that you saw it on Google and actually went there is brilliant. Excellent drone footage, humorous tack and commentary.

    • @wesbaumguardner8829
      @wesbaumguardner8829 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Some of those geometries are the natural geometries of the rock as it fractures under shear stresses. The jagged edged rocks are likely a result of this occurring. Often, a lower layer is softer which makes it erode quicker. Over time the lower layer will erode out from under the upper layers and this causes massive internal stresses in the stone, and eventually fractures which typically occur along the weakest geometries of the stone itself.

I live in Western Wa State and we have this kind of rock here but ares comes in dark black, a black with white stripes, and a rust brown color. I was told it’s a magma being pushed through an old lava tub like a play do press. As the magma cools the ?? Molecules ?? crystalize into long 6 or 8 sided columns.
I think if I’m remembering that right, Imma gunna go find the WSU Geological UTube channel they have several great videos about how it forms. ✌️

I always think those are sedimentary rock layered over millions of years, then some seismic or volcanic force either pushed it up vertically like when tectonic plates or crust collide, or it sank into a massive magma chamber and then got stuck that way when the magma cooled.

Great work here, Nolan! The drone footage was superb. The circular channel at the top of the canyon you were in, really puzzles me. If that was cut out, with years of wind and water, why don't the rocks on the floor of that area look weathered? They are as sharp and angular, as the stones, that haven't fallen yet. They should be semi polished, or worn a little bit. Anyway, great work. I can't climb around on boulders anymore, so I'll leave it to you, to take me there.

Nice to see you do, and lovely that you video it, edit it, produce it and upload it. That is really nice of you and makes this channel, really interesting. I hope there is enough anomalies to keep it interesting :) I also hope this helps so people stay out of danger, and don't overrun nature too much. And surely not all that stands out (glitters) is gold. But that is part of the journey and adventure and surely sometimes can be also less interesting than we thought it could be. A lot of effort for a big rock... but kudos, miss the desert landscape. Now living in Midwest being unable to see the forest for the trees. There was a monolith, an obelisk in the center of town. Towering over the city... Nobody knew how old it was, where it came from or why it was there. It just always was... Made of red brick of some day gone by, Tatarian style alongside the river... It was demolished in the latter 50's with great difficulty... 17 foot thick walls, no entrance nor window, and I was curious as to why. There is very little evidence it ever existed to this day and why...? Seen one postcard:🤔

I’m not a geologist; I believe you’re correct in the volcanic nature of the rocks, however I don’t think it’s basalt. I would say it’s definitely granite, which is igneous (volcanic) based on the texture of the “monolith”. What an interesting area, there also appears to be a large amount of sedimentary rock as well! Glacial striations are visible in the top.
This area was hell on earth, once upon a time. Fire, then ice. Where is this?

Hello, what I believe you are seeing in the area around 4:09 is the result of a lava flow that results in a unique basalt cooling formation called Columnar Basalt. It looks like tall hexagonal columns of rock. If you are old enough the Band Led Zeppelin featured similar on their Album Cover Houses of the Holy- Photo taken on Giant's Causeway, Northern, Ireland. I'm still watching..but this part is awesome and I had to comment!! edit- so happy to see at the end you knew it was Basalt. And a very beautiful and unique example of it too! Awesome . Ok it was not the great revelation but the point is you went to look and shared the results . That is cool . In looking at the area of incredible geology , with is crystalline in structure , I feel there are some things yet to be found in that area . Keep up the search and share my friend . :O)

Vertically bedded sandstone, that’s why it has eroded out as slabs. Reminds me of that set on A Space Odessey: 2001. Primordial!

I bet there would be gold sitting in cracks and crevices on top of that bedrock along the bottom of those washes. Intensely altered and fractured basalt is a common host rock.

That was way cool geology. Perhaps a fault made the canyon. Need a geologist input.
