Me too! Having acquired a collection of lenses I'm still happy playing around with, there's not much incentive to commit to starting again at a higher price point. However, I think this is a good move by Lumix, as they are expanding their user experience across both platforms in a way that should keep them customers. A year or so ago, Panasonic successfully convincing me that I needed to abandon m4/3 in favour of full frame might well have resulted in me going out to look for an A7iv. Nice review! In regards to your frustration with the 26mm f/8 lens, I think that you might have misunderstood how to focus using a lens with an f/8 aperture. If you use a DOF-calculator you will see that when you want to focus on anything further away than 3 meters with a 26mm f/8 FF lens you can just set the lens to infinity focus and you will nail focus every time. It is only if you want to focus on subjects closer than 2 meters that you really need to move the focus ring. Since most of your example pictures are aimed at having a focus further than 3 meters away, you could have just left the focus at infinity and you would have had perfect focus every time. That is the selling point of an f/8 lens: you just set it at infinity focus and snap away. Just like a phone (I've read that the iPhone has the approximate DOF-equivalent of f/10 FF). Understanding this, the fact that the lens doesn't have autofocus and only a short focus throw is not really much of a drawback, since it is made as an infinityfocus snapshot lens (If the lens had a wider aperture, however, then autofocus or a larger throw would have been necessary, because the focus area around the focal plane would be more narrow). What confuses me most about this lens is who would want an f/8 lens when we have phones with cameras that are exceptional at these narrow apertures. One of the few things that phone cameras don't have are wide apertures (in relation to sensor size, affecting depth of field). A 26mm f/8 FF lens is so close to a regular iPhone lens' field of view and depth of field that the Lumix lens feels very redundant.
My heart is happy every time you say that you wish this was mft. I agree!!! I have so many mft lenses. They have better apertures than this lens! I love my g9ii, and I'm not really into the s9 body and its lack of viewfinder, but I'd buy one in a heartbeat if it was MFT. I just have no desire for a "tiny" full frame. Love your work as always! Had I gone for the S9, I'd have started looking at adapters for vintage glass right out of the gate. There must have been some kind of manufacturing glitch behind the scenes for them to come up with an F8 manual focus **cap lens** as the first kit, instead of (at least) a proper 40mm pancake equivalent to the 20mm on m43. Seems like a decision made in a panic. I like the yellow S9, the cream yellow fits better with the gold trim than a lemon yellow might have. I also like the stormtrooper look (white).
Panasonic should of had the no record limits for video at first. LUTS APP and the new features are excellent. Finally the Kit Lens 18-40mm is out but like You I would love to see small compact Primes. I watched a video between Lumix S lenses compared to Sigma I lenses and the sharpness and less focus breathing the Panasonic performed better. Cheers!

I REALLY wish this had an EVF. I have astigmatism and there's no way I can shoot without one now. Your video is outstanding as usual though and I love your daring decorative risks!! Yellow for me.
I shoot a lot of manual focus lenses on my S5 IIx and the trick is to punch in. Once you get used to it, it's actually quite fast with a viewfinder and I guess in the UK it would work on a screen too? With Spanish sun, no way, none of my pictures would be in focus either, I can't see anything on my screen around here 😆 You can also zone focus most manual lenses and I do that a lot, but with the S5 IIx my aim is terrible when shooting from the hip because it's really front heavy for some reason. Even with my tiny Zeiss Biogon 35mm M mount lens it droops down rather than pointing up like a Leica, gotta practice my aim a bit more. The Zeiss would be a match made in heaven for the S9 by the way if you get the hang of manual focusing. Perfect form factor! The yellow is ✨! I love that you customise your cameras!
@@MicroFourNerds Honestly I think they should have skipped that 26mm lens design altogether and just delayed the S9 release until they had this wee lil 18-40mm. Now that's a tempting lens!
Seriously want a s9 but was afraid of the pancake lens... glad to see the new lens. Sad to see you pull the green off the s9 I think the red and green look the best
Since the total loss of 1:1 optical viewfinders on old 35mm SLR cams, auto-focus is a must! We are totally dependent on autofocus, and I consider manual focus lenses on digicams a total waste of good money, period. My first SLR (film, yes, I am that old!) was a brand new (in 1979) Ricoh KR-5 (no bloody "Super", or "I" or "II"), and the viewfinder is so big (still have my KR-5), you had to peek "around" the side of the peephole frame by moving your eye a bit. Good thing was, with Ricoh's standard 55mm f/2.2 attached, you could leave one eye open, and use the other through the viewfinder, and the views matched! THAT made manual focus easy! THEN viewfinders got smaller, because people with glasses (I wear them now myself) could not see the whole scene through these 1:1 viewfinders. YUCK! Composing turned into a pain, the smaller image made focusing difficult, and I never enjoyed any other camera as much, as I did that KR-5. THEN live electronic screens came along, and all was good again. I knew with my Panasonic DMC-LC40, that the future for me was with electronic live-screens, even though that one was just a glorified postage stamp, but it was easier to use, than the cramped viewfinders! No more peephole viewfinders, my days with glasses came almost at the same time as my first digicams, and my 3 inch screens are as good now as that old KR-5 was before I needed glasses. BAD news is this: Manual focus? FORGET IT! Nailsharp autofocus with a touchscreen, allowing me to pick by touch where the focus is, and also firing FAST without noticeable delay, is where it is now. Pick and BLAM, and you got the perfect shot every time. My Olympus PL6 and PL8 do just that, and I love them!
Wow had it launched with that lens and without the super short recording limits this thing would have received positive perception and actually been hyped.
That lens... I think I know what I'm getting for christmas this year 😅 I hope this means that they are going to make a couple of primes in that size like a 40mm F2.8 for example. I'd gotten so used to the m4/3 system and it's tiny lenses that when I got the S5 I was surprised at just how big the lenses are, and a bit pricey too... My favourite prime for the L-mount is the Pergear 35mm F1.4. It's actually smaller than this 18-40mm and while is full manual it's pretty good. I generally shoot it at between F2 and F4. More little lenses, Panasonic and the L-Mount Alliance, please 😊
And how it is on S5II / S5IIX? When I was a Sony boy I had Samyang 35 2.8 which I liked with my A7III... I would not mind getting this 18-40 on S5 actually.
I like how the gh7 is like 3 times bigger than the s9 haha proud m43 owner here but I go to a venue with tons of photographers and they are always saying “I thought micro four thirds was small” 😂
Isn’t the absence of a mechanical shutter upsetting when shooting at moving subjects? I’m mainly shooting vehicles so I’m doubting this would make it... but it makes so much noise that I’m almost tempted to get it...
Thanks for sharing the updates! Oh Wait - the S9 cool colors are stickers - I didn't realize that until just now! Glad the updates and new lens are out for it now - I think it might be a fun cam to have for sure - still wishing they would release a m4/3 in a similar body though.
I just need to know one thing before I buy this camera. Can you shoot in Vlog for max dynamic range and then apply a rec709 lut and then another stylized lut baked in? Essentially removing the need for post processing with a computer.
Very excited for Lumix Lab on the G9II. I've only played with it briefly but I thought it was excellent. For myself, I'm quite happy that Panasonic has no small MFT camera right now because that way I don't have any decisions to make. :D

May i ask something ? i am looking to buy my first m43 camera for street photography. I like 50mm in fullframe so i ordered the olympus 25mm 1.8 since its small and light and focuses fast. I am between the olympus pen epl-7 and the olympus pen ep5. Which one would you choose ?
nikon have the 26 f2.8 AF for full frame, with the same price, weight and size of the potato 26 f8 manual focus. And the tiny nikon 40 f2 for full frame.
Emily is the new white color available for the US ? I see the Pink and Mint green for preorder but I want to get it in white, it’s sad to have colored versions in different regions and not in general, please tell lumix 😢
Oooh we were only shown the white, I knew nothing about the pink and green... now I want a mint green 😂 I assume the white is just for UK (possibly European?) Region
@@MicroFourNerds dang that’s a shame, but please let lumix know, I’ve been a lumix shooter for years and have grown my channel based on Lumix cameras, I really don’t get why the best color is not for the available globaly. Yes the Mint green looks very nice but the white 😭
Hi Emily, thanks for the video. May I ask, have you tried grabbing still images on a 6K video? If yes, how was it? Meaning, do you get a lot of details out of it? Yes, I'm thinking Panasonic's 4K photo by asking this question. By the way, I prefer the green, but I think the yellow one matches your personality more. TIA
how durable would oyu say this is, I dont do crazy risky stuff but a dog park can be alot of dust, and it rains 80% of my free time I really want an S9 but the weather resitance and e shutter have me concerned for wildlife, but low light and grain is my most important factor
If this was my only camera, I think it would be quite annoying. I've had Banding once or twice in street photography and only noticed when I'm back home at the computer. In terms of rolling shutter, it's been fine, but you do need to keep an eye out for Banding in certain places
LOVED it in yellow. Is that an Aki Asahi leatherette replacement? I bought a dark cyan GM1 leatherette replacement from them, it arrived last week but I still haven't had the courage to rip out the original GM1 black leatherette 😅
Great video and love the new features/lens option! I have to ask, where are you picking up your vinyl skins for the camera? I've been looking for something for my G9ii :) Thanks!
Aliexpress and similar places. Sometimes it's a bit hit and miss - but that gold one for the top of this camera in particular is SO nice! And I love the yellow one too ☺️
I've been thinking on and off about pimping out my wee old GX80 with a new skin, and this vid brings all that roaring back. But I might be about eight years too late for that market. Maybe I'll go back and watch those spray-painting videos again... 🤔
This seriously makes me reconsider to swap from M4/3 to this Small Format camera... The pocketable camera when attaching the 18-40mm, built-in LUTs that'd help me to NOT have to edit on a computer my pictures for 80% of the case, all of this genuinely gives me food for thoughts. 4 constraints prevent me from doing so: 1) All my small f1.7 / f1.8 M4/3 lenses perhaps won't have a size/weight equivalent in Small Format. Same for my 12-40 f2.8. 2) If I want to have a tele-zoom lens, light and small as my 40-150, I won't have the same in size and especially in weight... 3) The price of the camera, and perhaps one additional lens (the recent 28-200mm?) probably won't be enough if I sell all my glass and my 2 Olympus + Pany GX8 altogether, and money is tight :( 4) I might miss using the EVF...
I have one old compact that I refuse to part with due to its excellent colour I have shot Olympus since the OMD EM 1. I have the OM systems Om-1. I also have a sizable Cole ton of Olympus glass as well. The Mark 2 version makes me yawn. We had exciting features with Olympus. Live , interval ND filters , High res and great glass. News lens ? A 150-600 Tamaron FF lens for twice as much ? Any way I am looking at the hybrid Panasonics to do video as well as I am getting into that as well. I am thinking the GH6 or the g9. I mainly shoot wildlife, some landscapes and city views. Any suggestions since you have gone on Safari?
For safari between the gh6 and g9 I'd pick the g9. There's a lot of cross-over between those two cameras, but the G9 has a 0.5 second pre-burst mode, which is very handy on safari! For example waiting for a bird to leave a branch, you won't miss the shot with a pre-burst mode. However if budget allows, the g9ii is where Lumix added phase detect auto focus, and even more advanced burst modes and pre-burst modes. The better auto focus and subject tracking is so handy for fast animals. So for me the best choice would be g9ii, then g9. But you'll have a brilliant time with either!
Full frame is dead, LOL 😆 ***kidding*** or am I serious? 😂. Really love your content Emily there’s something down-to-earth about you. That yellow hits hard IMHO. You rock!
As someone with a soft spot for Panny since I started my photog career with it...I think the S9 is still in a rough spot. Here in Canada, it's the same price as the Sony A7C, which has a viewfinder, mechanical shutter, tons of lenses (including small ones) from Sony and third parties, weather sealed, etc.
Yep, I'm looking at these 2 little FF cameras for daily shooting...S9 with this new 18-40 or A7C with the 28-60. I like SOOC photography, so the LUTs on this Lumix appeals me, but Sony small primes at looking at me too 😅
@@mythicbone tbf sony has creative look, their overlooked features that able to generate "colorful" SOOC. S9 won the open gate and unlimited recording too, it's far more resilient to overheats compared to sony

The Zeiss would be a match made in heaven for the S9 by the way if you get the hang of manual focusing. Perfect form factor!
The yellow is ✨! I love that you customise your cameras!
Definitely I needed to get into the habit to punch in with that 26mm lens!
BAD news is this:
Manual focus?
I agree. However, f4.5-6.3 is a significant trade off for the small form factor.
where can we find a list of all the cameras you shoot with ?
That lens... I think I know what I'm getting for christmas this year 😅
I hope this means that they are going to make a couple of primes in that size like a 40mm F2.8 for example.
You speak in a very nice, soothing tone. I am surprised because I usually don't like British accents (too high a pitch), but yours is very wonderful.
Good news post! Lenses sell cameras. Looking forward to seeing more photos taken with 18-40mm. It might sell more Leica T cameras too! 😊
I just checked MPB/USA and there are none available. The Emily effect?
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@@martingreenberg870 just the one T in MPB/UK :)
where did you get the yellow faux-leather skin?
Would you recommend the Fuji XM-5 over the S9?
Can you tell use which monopod it is that you showed in the video?tks
That camera makeover looks great. Especially with the cage
Panasonic missed an opportunity by not including an eyelevel viewfinder.
No they didn't. Nobody needs it. And your photos would probably be better if you freed yourself from the constraint too. 😂
Nah - I'll keep it m4/3rds. 👍😁
Will some of those features come to the m4/3rds range and a 4/3rds version of the S9 would be great.
Thanks.
You can yes. You can stack 2 luts
Very excited for Lumix Lab on the G9II. I've only played with it briefly but I thought it was excellent. For myself, I'm quite happy that Panasonic has no small MFT camera right now because that way I don't have any decisions to make. :D
It makes so much more sense with the cage and grip
Hi, WHere did you get replaceable leatherette for S9 if you don't mind ?
May i ask something ? i am looking to buy my first m43 camera for street photography. I like 50mm in fullframe so i ordered the olympus 25mm 1.8 since its small and light and focuses fast. I am between the olympus pen epl-7 and the olympus pen ep5. Which one would you choose ?
Where to get the decals?
Where do i get the mic display setting on screen? or does it activae only when i plug in a mic during video?
It's a setting in the video menu, the sub menu has a microphone icon for audio settings
Any Idea how long it can record in 1080p. I presume longer as it has less processing to do
Great video! I like the style and how you delivered all the info and your opinions. new sub! Thanks : )
Getting this setup but with the Sigma 45mm 2.9 to replace my Ricoh GRiiX
It looks peach rather than yellow. Could it be the color grading? I’m watching on an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
how dose this compare to gm5 now? form factor or fun comparison?
Where can I find skins for the s9
The Yellow for sure, nice job Emily 😍😍
I preferred the green and gold 😅 Another fun video!
Sorry if I missed it, but where did you get the yellow decals?!
Wish it had a good pancake 35 or 40/2.8. Willing to give up my GR3x for this combination
nikon have the 26 f2.8 AF for full frame, with the same price, weight and size of the potato 26 f8 manual focus. And the tiny nikon 40 f2 for full frame.
The unlimited* recording makes the S9 a camera I would actually buy now.
Blue to Green and Green to Taxi 🚕
@@AndyLSB I 100% agree. Have you seen the silver topped one only available in Asia? That looks SO nice too!
@@MicroFourNerdsfrom rca moment there I read 'only available in Asda', which would have been a surprise 😂!
@@chrishowell5718 😂 amazing
Did you buy that lens or was it sent out to you by Panasonic?
What monopod are you using please?
Great video, Emily! :)
All i needed was a viewfinder and this would’ve been the beat camera on the market imo .
Ooooh, wrapped a camera instead of spray painting it... I like the colours and personality of the new look!
Hi sister what tripod do you use i
like your tripod. Pls give me the mane of tripod. Thank you.
It's the ifootage cobra strike 3 monopod - it's great for smaller spaces and setting up quickly
@@MicroFourNerds thank you.
Just launch some small lenses with leaf shutter built in to it Panasonic.
TIA
I don't want a tiny Micro4/3, but maybe a GX line up WITH IBIS would be great
Is The auto focus good? Eye + face auto focus?
you should be able to return/exchange your lens cap lens for the 18-40 for a small additional fee
That would be amazing tbh!
how durable would oyu say this is, I dont do crazy risky stuff but a dog park can be alot of dust, and it rains 80% of my free time
I really want an S9 but the weather resitance and e shutter have me concerned for wildlife, but low light and grain is my most important factor
just go with a sony, you can get the Sony a7iii with a good lens for under 2k now brand new. its 10x the camera this panasonic is.
@ I bought the Sony ZVE one and a Lumix S9 plus some gaffer tape and a silicone case
the gold n yellow s9 really has so much flair
Do you think the electronic shutter is too frustrating to deal with if this was your only camera?
If this was my only camera, I think it would be quite annoying. I've had Banding once or twice in street photography and only noticed when I'm back home at the computer. In terms of rolling shutter, it's been fine, but you do need to keep an eye out for Banding in certain places
LOVED it in yellow. Is that an Aki Asahi leatherette replacement? I bought a dark cyan GM1 leatherette replacement from them, it arrived last week but I still haven't had the courage to rip out the original GM1 black leatherette 😅
It is nerve-wracking!
Does the hybrid zoom work across all L-mount lenses? Could you stick the Sigma 150-600mm on it and get it to zoom into the stratosphere? 😄
I believe it only works with Lumix lenses, but don't quote me on that. It's ridiculously impressive with the Lumix 28-200mm!
The pricing for s9 and s5iix body is the same in my country. S9 pricing strategy don't make sense. 🤔
I LOVE your color mods. how did you get the patterning on the button edge?
Looks like the legend of Zelda. Need it too!
4 constraints prevent me from doing so:
1) All my small f1.7 / f1.8 M4/3 lenses perhaps won't have a size/weight equivalent in Small Format. Same for my 12-40 f2.8.
2) If I want to have a tele-zoom lens, light and small as my 40-150, I won't have the same in size and especially in weight...
3) The price of the camera, and perhaps one additional lens (the recent 28-200mm?) probably won't be enough if I sell all my glass and my 2 Olympus + Pany GX8 altogether, and money is tight :(
4) I might miss using the EVF...
I have one old compact that I refuse to part with due to its excellent colour
I have shot Olympus since the OMD EM 1.
I am interested to know the experience of putting the new zoom lens to your Leica T. Possible share some images or experience on this?
So far it works like a charm! With the aps-c crop, it actually makes it more like a standard stock lens rather than a wider lens. Perfect combo!
@@MicroFourNerds hows the image quality though
@@jamesyipkh great. It's a great lens and a great camera 😊
Hope for Samyang to drop some primes in the l-mount section.😅
Can’t wait for LUMIX to bring all this to an updated MFT version
Can I use ad200 flash light in this body ?
Unfortunately not. There's no hotshoe, and without a mechanicl shutter you'll get Banding in the images
@@MicroFourNerds This body have Apple prores codec ?
Full frame is dead, LOL 😆 ***kidding*** or am I serious? 😂. Really love your content Emily there’s something down-to-earth about you. That yellow hits hard IMHO. You rock!
THANKS❤, Very good review, 1 question, can I use the leica 11-23 mm on S9 and still have 11mm ?
Hi, that lens is an aps-c lens, not designed to cover full frame, so it would be cropped on the s9 at roughly 17-35mm
Hi again, thanks for the answer, have a good day
As someone with a soft spot for Panny since I started my photog career with it...I think the S9 is still in a rough spot.
If they could update my GX8 with the G9 auto focus, I'd be super excited, because I have some nice lenses for micro 4/3 and would rather stay in a system which has tonnes of high quality tiny lenses available.
