Been a big fan of Zappa and z Bowie for several decades and it never dawned on me but you’re right, franks vocals in this song are definitely sort of Bowie-ish.
If this song sounds a bit different to you, it's because it's a George Duke song (he's on keyboards), Frank Zappa wrote the lyrics( social criticism)... the melody is fantastic and the backing vocals makes me melt every time! Thanks for this "sweet" reaction!
Much more important than a great melody and sweet guitar work, this is a social commentary about racism in America. Frank being Frank - writing lyrics above mostly everyone's head.
@@lizmelo5374 sorry to hear that Liz , am sure the gag will get old at some point but as long as it makes you chuckle on a bad day I might land it again ! 🤣🤣
There MIGHT be some musical input by Zappa here... but like the other comments are saying... if there is... it's not mmuch. It's basically a George Duke song with Zappa lyrics. HAVING SAID THAT... the lyrics are amazing... he manages to make fun of African American culture WITHOUT being truly offensive towards Black People. And he wrote this stuff for a song written by...A BLACK PERSON!!! When he handed the lyrics to George Duke and said...Let's use these lyrics for THAT song... Duke was like "MAN...are you fucking serious?" And Frank was basically like "Yeah...I am... you know I'm not racist...They'll know, too." So Duke was like..."Well....hmmm...ok...yeah...Fuck it... let's do it. Those lyrics... take the piss out of EVERYONE...Including US. They fuck with African Culture "Doo Rag" They fuck with Gospel "Woah" They fuck with Facist bigots of the 60's "Sprayed with a hose...Cept in the winter when it's cold and it's hard when it hits on yer nose" It fucks with Blue Collar "Keep your nose to the grindstone" And it fucks with the "Bourgeoisie" "Little Jockeys" He may not have wrote the music...but the lyrics...are among his best. And yes...this is just about his most commercial song... if it weren't for all the aformentioned subtext
I was just listening to a Peter Ratty Hince interview and just learned that Freddie loved Rory Gallagher. I had no idea. I thought you would like that.

Gail told me about the little black jockey statuettes on the rich people's lawns and how going up there and smashing them to bits was a thing.
Props to Linda Sims Debbie Wilson and Tina Turner for the backing vocals!
George Duke wrote the music, Frank wrote the lyrics...a rarity, but a great collaboration.
Try the song stuff up the cracks off the Ruben and the jets album

Really like this song which was used as a civil rights song but it’s just a great song no matter what the meaning. ✌🏼
The 70s, if it was 60s be a lot weirder (for zappa)
