Why Underoath Don't Call Themselves a Christian Band Anymore

  • "I don't care what fucking religion you are, that's so not what it's about. It's not about a unit moving together, it's about a bunch of people growing up on their own," Underoath vocalist Spencer Chamberlain tells Revolver. "It was so much pressure and everything you did - no pun intended - you were crucified for. You couldn't do anything without someone being angry. People don't realize how much that weighs on you."

Guys I hope you know how you lead is how others will follow. I am the mother of a now 31 year old who used to listen to you guys when she was 12/13 years old. I was a lyric reader, I didn’t want my daughter to hear and or repeat song lyrics that were not morally good. So you guys passed the mom test. To see her light up when looking at your videos was something I will cherish forever. She fell out of Christianity for the same reasons you share here - and frankly I do not blame her on how Christian’s have become so self righteous and judgemental. She recently saw you guys on tour in Ft Worth - and what she does not know is that I prayed she would have an encounter with you guys - and she did! She and her sister (+boyfriends) rode the elevator at the hotel. What are the chances you guys would be staying at the same hotel. Guys don’t lose sight of God’s purpose for your platform! Don’t get lost as you play along side others who didn’t grow up having some knowledge of Christ. Just because people have made His purpose what it shouldn’t be don’t let His purpose for you change - kids see you, follow you. My prayers for you guys, I pray the Lord becomes very real in your lives - you have a very important job. You guys are where you need to be, but there is a greater purpose. Rock on ❤

Im in the rabbit hole with this one. I understood that they were not christian anymore, but I just saw them live and he threw devils horns on his head during his performance and now I am questioning everything. Underoath is my favorite band and the band that introduced me to metal, but I am a hardcore christian to the point where I don’t listen to music that speaks/channels any sort of evil. I believe satan has a tight grip on the music industry especially right now, and I thought that I could trust Underoath to not be satanic. Idk help me

@Vestavia A lot of people identify with the darker side of metal music, especially those who have suffered a rough childhood or extensive trauma. Because music in itself is a self projecting phenomenon with their own internal emotions. You'd be surprised by the amount of good hearted people listen to that stuff. Negative energy is negative only if you allow it.

Sounds like having a conversation with Jesus might help you. I felt pretty gutted when Spencer opened up about renouncing his faith. This video brought a bit of peace about it as he seems to clarify that they wanted to make room for others to be comfortable with what they believe as well. As should all Christian people. Christian faith isn't about snuffing out non-believers, it is about people choosing to believe and have a relationship with Jesus. If you were forced to believe or behave like you believe in a faith in someone or something that you don't - how would you have felt? I think it is much better for someone to choose to believe or not to believe than to pretend.
It is really awful to hear that some people have been persecuted by people who call themselves "Christians" because of what they believe or the way they behave. Jesus calls us to love all people, no matter what, no matter who they are or what they believe. He calls us to love and support them through their struggles, to witness his love, not persecute others. He doesn't tell us to hurt them because they don't believe. He tells us to do the opposite. I have sometimes struggles with labeling myself a Christian because of the bad reputation it can carry. I love Jesus, he teaches me to love everyone no matter what - and to be accountable to him for my actions. Not to point out the flaws or sins of others.
Jesus is here to listen to you, love you and guide you and forgive you.

Bruh, they're not satanic just because some of them don't believe in your imaginary friend. You can have your faith without applying it to everyone around you, dude.

I hate this excuse from christians "oh well they were never real christians" dismissing any real issues or wounds they have from the church. People cry out to God for years as kids and adults, they commit their time to yhe church and christ and are like a light to others and they still fall away from the exact belief system you hold because there isnt enough love in the church and thats just facts. Why are some christians so afraid to confront the specks in their eye? And confront that even if they didnt directly harm anyone, how churches and people in them can negatively affect others and use the Bible to cover it up, or hush the people down for sake of saving face. The fact i hear most churches dont even want lgbtq+ people to worship in the same space as them says it all. Thats NOT Christ like love and itll never be.

These comments are ridiculous lol. People tend to change their beliefs over time, no need to freak out because a band doesn't believe the same thing you do anymore. The judgment by a lot of the Christians in this comment section is a big reason why many leave the faith.

🔥🔥This is what happens when you stop looking at Christ and start looking at christians. Jesus said follow me, Not follow christians. Humans will fail, thats why he Jesus said to look to Him. Simple thing which many people fail to do.. If one day, God forbid, i drift away from God and hate Jesus, thats because i stopped looking to Him and started looking at christians.. I was so saddened and disappointed to find this out. They gave into temptations and fell into satans tactics. They should’ve known the sacrifices they would have to make being brave and open about their love towards jesus christ. But that’s more worth it to have. And to also have true fans even if it is only 20. The road to good is difficult but worth it. Definitely saddened. Was a fan since my middle school days. Not only for their music but how brave they were to express their love to god.

Takes like that are completely the reason. People should believe what they want and not be shunned/pushed away for that. Conforming your music based on one belief also limits your creativity if you choose to make music based on your own personal inspiration
