    Thanks for the review of the new Batis 135/2.8. It was nice to know that you were open-minded about the differences between the Sony E-mount system and Canon's equipment, with which you are more familiar. Cheers.
    The lens looks pretty attractive, BTW. Like others who have commented here, the thought of a relatively long lens that is nonetheless relatively light, as well, is quite appealing.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In real world use it is balanced pretty well.

  • @ktk0358
    @ktk0358 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, it is 2.8 vs milvus 2.0 (or other 1.8/1.4 options), yet, the OIS gives 2-4 stop advantage depending how shaky a person is. In body stabilization further improves that. 0.1sec shots are completely stable in my experience.
    I though of sigma and the 1.4, but decided to go w Batis due to weight, native mount and native AF.... It just balances PERFECTLY on A7Riii.
    Besides, the Zeiss look is what one pays for above the superb image quality and handling.
    Good review again, but I could feel you were not as confident as on other reviews.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for the quick look at the new Zeiss 135mm lens. I would be very interested to see how that will compare to Sigma 135mm lens because I am in the market for 135mm. I use to shoot Canon 135mm, Nikon FD 135mm and A-Mount Ziess 135mm f1.8. I have to admit out of all the Zeiss lens was the best. Thanks again for the work you share. Great stuff!

      It is one stop slower, of course, but it is optically on another level.

    • @Willie0211
      @Willie0211 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the lens he is reviewing is a 2.8. the lens that nick commented on is a 2.0. a stop slower means he would have to adjusted his iso or shutter an extra stop. if he adjusted his shutter then it will be a stop slower. for every stop of aperture you adjust you have to also adjust in your iso or shutter. by saying its optically on another level he is saying that its just simply better. I personally prefer to shoot 2.8-4 on portraits. but I do like a quicker aperture, between 1.8 and 2.8 for lower light shooting. if you need a quicker aperture then you might want to get the 2.0 but it is an L lens so if you have a sony (assuming you do cause its a battis) you also need an adapter. the 2.8 is native with better optics so unless you need an extra stop of bokeh..I wouldn't get the f2. id 100% get the 2.8.

      yeah he knows his stuff for sure. i'm not with Sony any more but this is a nice lens. 2.8 is my sweet spot so id jump on it if I didn't already own the rokinon f2 version. which is a homerun of a lens.

    Looking forward to the testing of this premium and very expensive lens, hope it lives up to the Zeiss name. The image gallery looks very promising with great sharpness and color, the lack of vignetting is also quite obvious.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The latter really surprises me. I can't remember a Zeiss lens with low vignette before!

    • @emph66
      @emph66 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, that's been the Achilles heel of Zeiss and other high end lenses. Are you sure the A7RII camera body is not applying vignetting correction to the raw files? Looks almost too good to be true. :)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest I don't know the Sony body well enough to know that - though I've never heard of applying corrections to RAW files. The whole point of a RAW file is to get it untouched. The "relative illuminance" chart from Zeiss I have seems to indicate that in the extreme corners there is only about 10% difference between f/2.8 and f/5.6, so that looks pretty good. The same chart for the Milvus 2/135mm shows about a 60% difference, to give you perspective.

    • @emph66
      @emph66 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting, I suspect the illuminance chart is accurate and the lens is performing to specification. I have heard in blog posts of lens correction data being added to the raw files and interpreted by the raw processing software to add the appropriate corrections. Apparently this is not the case with the 135 mm Zeiss Batis.

    • @metphmet
      @metphmet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No , no . Sony A7 raws are free of corrections. You have to activate the lens profile corection in LR if you want to correct vignete , distorsion , CA.

      Your opinion: Batis 135 or Milvus 135 - which is better?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I need to shoot with it longer and in more situations. My gut, however, says that I slightly prefer the Milvus' rendering. This lens is very, very sharp, though. The Milvus' larger aperture gives it an advantage in the bokeh department.

    I'm disappointed that Zeiss has been increasing the prices of their more recent Batis lenses. Can't say I'm surprised, though. They had problems keeping up with production of the first lenses they launched. Supply and demand, I guess.

    • @shang-hsienyang1284
      @shang-hsienyang1284 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For an additional US$500, one can buy the 70-200 f/2.8 G-master. I really don't understand the pricing.

    • @OneCharmingQuark
      @OneCharmingQuark 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This lens is much smaller and lighter. I think it will appeal to different people. Zeiss might drop the prices eventually, but if they're selling so many lenses that production can't keep up it makes sense for them to charge more. I'm hoping Samyang will make an autofocus version of their 135mm f2. It would make much more sense than their autofocus 14mm f2.8.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used both, but I primarily use AF-S (haven't really shot action with the lens)

    • @dcameron7736
      @dcameron7736 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Abbott I do opposite AF-S is very limiting compared to AF-C on Sony-mirrorless cameras. though at first it was going against the grain of years of shooting.
      I now use AF-C for most usage. the most interesting thing I've found with portraits AF-C are cleaner, less second takes, eye auto focus in AF-C allows more emotions in the shot, and lastly a lot more flexibility.
      Would you be willing to do a review coming from Canon shooter point of view one of these day. Using just AF-C only on Sony vs Canon AF?

    • @damianc80
      @damianc80 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has become a very popular system with many photographers now and growing fast. Which is not surprising with the advantages a mirrorless brings and with Sony's particular features like 5 axis image stabilisation built in allows people to use lenses that don't come with image stabilisation. Which kind of perplexes me. Zeiss built stabilisation into the lens when the Sony E mount cameras already have image stabilisation built into the sensor.... don't know why they did that

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a little puzzled by the OS too, but I guess the 5 Axis stabilization is currently only in a couple of their E-Mount bodies. Many E-Mount shooters will be thankful for the OS.

  • @leojonkers3181
    @leojonkers3181 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought this Sony already had stabilisation in the camera. Looks to me a very nice camera for my old FD lenses (and with a converter my EF lenses). I use my Canon 135 mm F2.0 a lot lately and that lens is só fantastic. But I must say, your photo gallery shows a lot of beautiful pictures. But one stop slower then the Canon for twice the price? Must be the little amount of lenses you can screw directly on the Sony that influence the price. Can not think of a other reason. The name Zeiss perhaps.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Canon 135L is a beautiful lens, but is not in the same class as this lens optically. I think the stabilization in the lens is because not all Sony E-mount bodies have the IBIS (just a couple of them).

    • @leojonkers3181
      @leojonkers3181 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Sony A* mark I types I thought? The mark II types of Sony have that. Sometimes it is strange for me to read that there are even better lenses, I always used to love to have those better lens. But I tend to be happy more and more what I have and that is a lot. I love my Canon 135 mm F2.0L lens, in every aspect. The sharpness wide open (and F2.0 is very open for a 135mm), the beautiful bokeh. What more can I ask for? Sigma made a very nice 85mm Art lens, while I am very happy with my Sigma 85mm non Art lens. Of course as a reviewer you have to be objective and I surely believe the 85 mm Art for example is better then the non Art. I owned a Canon 85 F1.2 which did not do the job for me, the focus is kaput, even the manual, while the much cheaper Sigma did. It is very nice that you reviewed this lens on a serie of camera's I am very interested in. A Sony a7 mark II (with stabilisation build in, not the much more expensive A7R mark II you tested the Zeiss on) cost a little bit more then a Canon 6D. With a lot of new possibilities. A couple of converters and I can not stop dreaming...

    Tamron designs and manufactures most of these so-called Zeiss Batis lens. In my perspective, one reason that I keep using DSLR camera is because of the Otus and Milvus lenses. These "real" Zeiss have outstanding optical quality which could stand fierce competition, we don't really have to purchase for the meaningless Zeiss name stick.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you used this lens? If Tamron has a lens like this (with this optical performance) waiting for DSLR users at the 135mm focal length, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

    • @peicongli1768
      @peicongli1768 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, I don't have a camera body with E mount, so I never 'use' this lens in depth. And Tamron may not be allowed to publish a similar lens even they have the patent on it. My point is these Batis lenses are good, but too pricy for the meaningless Zeiss name stick.

    • @samusill
      @samusill 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      just for your information, Otus and Milvus are all made by Cosina(Japan), not Zeiss. So as you said, those also have so-called meaningless Zeiss name stick:)

    • @peicongli1768
      @peicongli1768 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OEM and ODM are different. Even Cosina manufactures Otus, Milvus, and Classic lenses, Zeiss still owns the patent. That's whay I said "Tamron *designs and manufactures* most of these so-called Zeiss *Batis* lenses;" additionally, you could find a similar example - Leica SL lenses (the patent is held by Panasonic).

    • @samusill
      @samusill 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is quite becoming a philosophical question. So who designed lenses matters to you, regardless of the brands. But I disagreed your point of view right here. In fact, Zeiss always "checks the qualities" in all phases form designs to manufacturings. And they also "agreed" to sell those under their name and reputation. Moreover, those lenses that you think have meaningless name sticks have excellent optical performances as you can see on DXOMark website. Therefore, whoever designed, Zeiss brands on those lenses will not become meaningless or other Zeiss lenses that you think real will not become more real.
      If you insist, actually I can also say all lenses except Zeiss Cine lenses are not real. Because your REAL Zeiss lenses are not "made" by Zeiss itself either. So no right answers here. Just no fake or real. It totally depends on to what extent you define them fake or real. Every single Zeiss lens is good.
      Btw, even if you use a Sony mirrorless camera instead of a DSLR camera, you still can use Otus or Milvus lenses by using something like MC-11 anyway. I just wanted to say it cannot be the reason why you should keep using DSLR at this point.

  • @adrianpocea2287
    @adrianpocea2287 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    From what I have seen until now, no other lens on this planet beats the Canon 200 mm f 2.0 for portraits and bokeh. If i would really have a high end portrait shoot where I would need to impress I would rent that one. Even Jason Lanier, who is deep down into Sony, uses it lately with an adapter. To have blocked over 2 grand on a prime portrait lens, with very limited use and flexibility, with no macro capabilities, for me is a waste of money and slightly snobbish. I admit that Batis is a cool name. For people that are making a ton of money out of photography and TH-cam( I saw Matt Granger unboxing it today) maybe it makes sense. For the rest of us, who shoots family sessions, poor artist head shots and newborns, a Canon 85 mm 1.8 delivers pretty much close

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you used the lens? I only ask because if you think the Canon 85mm f/1.8 is close, you definitely haven't. I see your point on some levels, but optically this lens is stunningly good.

    • @adrianpocea2287
      @adrianpocea2287 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Abbott No, I haven't. I am a Canon shooter, hence a subscriber to your channel. The last thing I would need now would be to block 2 grand on a fancy stylish portrait lens. Actually I need a camera that can record video for hours, cause I have a gig for money. So I am chasing a Panasonic.
      Maybe I stretched the point with the 85 mm 1.8, but we also have Sigma 85 1.4, cheaper, highest rated on dxomark, we have Canon 85 mm 1.2, also significantly cheaper now, used, we have the Canon 135 mm 2.0, also cheaper, plus the macro long lenses. There are so many choices for a field where I don't honestly know that most people would notice anything that , to change a whole system or just to buy an expensive body for this lens seems quite odd. On the other hand, I understand, we get bored, we want the best. I changed already three bodies and 8 lenses since August, following the reviews. Our parents were buying stuff to last for 20 years, that's why they were paying, for quality and reliability, now the life span of any equipment we own is about 6 months one year.
