  • 1954 Ford Truck Engines - A Historic Reel
    1954 Fords
The 1954 Ford line of cars and trucks were a breakthrough advancement in auto technology. The new front end suspensions, choice of design and quality in their cars, as well as style and design, were big sellers for consumers. These Historical Ford Reels break down the car by showcasing their engines, design, durability, capacity, and more.
    Taken From Wikipedia
"The long-lived Flathead V8 engine was replaced for 1954 by a 239 cubic inch overhead valve Y-block unit, marking the end of an era. This engine produced 130 hp (97 kW) with a 2-barrel carburetor. An impressive 160 hp (119 kW) 256 C.I. version with a Holley four-barrel was available in the official-use-only law enforcement model. The six-cylinder was up to 223 cu in (3.7 L) and now produced 115 hp.[8] Another new addition was the "Crestline Skyliner" 2-door hardtop, which featured an acrylic glass panel over the front half of the roof. Also added was the new "Astra-Dial Control panel" speedometer, which has a clear, plastic covering on the top, which let sunlight illuminate it in the day-time.[9] New power accessories included a four-way power front seat.[2] The "woody" Country Squire wagon now used artificial fiberglass panels but remained the most-expensive Ford.”

Rode a '54 school bus when in grade school. Not sure which V-8. B-700 "Big Job". 5 speed trans, synchronised only in 4th & 5th. Driver never learned to double clutch, would take off in 2nd, grind into 3rd. Yet that trans took it for a long time, at least 3 years.

Because it had about 500 pound-feet of torque.
Horsepower is not as important as torque in pulling.

With 2-speed axles, and in many cases, auxiliary transmissions, both of which multiply powertrain torque to get the job done. Imagine shifting a truck with two shifters instead of one! 😊

the Big Jobs made a lot of noise while crawling up the steep hills around here but then again every big truck did that back in the 50’s! They all had what would now be considered small low power engines then

I'm trying to find out when the first Ford V8 diesel heavy truck engine (i.e. not pickup, or F-series) was introduced. Any ideas?

    • @dieselfueled_

I think the first v8 diesel that came in a ford was more than likely a detroit but if you mean the first diesel overall in a ford it would probably be a old NH Cummins but i could be wrong

1967. Designed by Caterpullar, built by Ford. Featured a single compression piston ring. Not sure of model number. Only lasted a couple years or so.

I don't think Ford offered diesel power in its trucks until 1962. I believe Cummins was installed in most Ford diesels for years, with Detroit and CAT also being offered. I did see a Ford-built diesel V8 from the 60s or 70s in a magazine somewhere, over 560 cubic inches and horsepower in the 200's. Not sure how popular it was, or how long it lasted. It might have been based on Ford's Super Duty industrial gas V8 block.

Ford introduced diesel engines in the H-series cab-over tractor lines in 1961...Cummins diesels were the first diesel engines used. They were expanded into the F-series conventional cabs, C-series tilt cabs, and N-series low-cab-forward models in 1963 (the regular trucks, NOT the pickups
