I truly enjoyed walking around Hamburg and experiencing it in a more complete way! Such a beautiful place with a feeling that reminds me a lot of my home in Los Angeles / San Diego because of its proximity to the Sea! If you want to views ALL the Proseiben Episodes and Vlogs Silas and I filmed in Hamburg I made a playlist here: th-cam.com/play/PLHIyjVW3KhozVWqO0w9WtJFN93Kk_og2z.html

I love to see you talking about the North and walking through HH. So many US Americans really believe that Bavaria is the "typical German thing" and yes, sure, Bavaria is awesome. But so are most of all the other and different regions of Germany.
I am very pleased to see that you are clarifying this and also mentioning the other regions. Me personally I love the North and prefer it, though I unfortunately never managed to live there!

Conner - are you still in the city? I give tours to foreigners all the time, as I used to provide free German lessons to the community of English-speakers in Hamburg.
Let me give you a proper tour. You missed so much that's extremely unique to Hamburg and makes the city special. You actually saw the touristy stuff, but there's so much more depth to this.
By the way, the central station is Europe's busiest train station per square metre. It's quite smaller for the number of passengers passing through.
In the beginning, when you walked past the church that said "Liebe" you were on "Lange Reihe", which is the main queer district in Hamburg. Just one street over, is a street that most people would rate as "dodgy" - Steindamm, with the Hansaplatz square. It's a street with its fair share of problems, as it's in proximity of the methadone dispensary and the “acceptance area” (that's what the city planner call it) where drug addicts can consume their drugs in a controlled environment. This spill over + the fact that Steindamm is extremely diverse (11 Mosques on that street alone, for example) make it a hot spot for petty crime, disorderly drinking, etc. On the other side, it's home to some really nice places and the upsides of diversity too.
At 12:40 you walked past Hotel Atlantic, which is a very well-known luxury hotel. It's where many officers of the British occupation forces used to reside after the world war. And, on the top floors, Udo Lindenberg, a famous German musician resides. He lived in that hotel for so long, that they just handed over the entire wing to him at some point.
The "fountain" area is "Jungfernstieg", which translates to "Maiden's Strip". Why? Because in the olden days, rich families would parade their daughters along this promenade to present them to suitors.

Just one fun fact, probably not that fun, but might be interesting for some people:The "Lion King" in Hamburg is the most successful Lion King Musical all over the world. From the commercial point of view as well as from the point of visitors. 2000 seats and just round about 90% to 95% sold in average over the year. It was my place to work for 15 years as a stage technichian. And i am really greatful that i was allowed to be part of the crew for that long time. Cheers to the crew and all people doing a fantastic job each day.
And thank you for the video, it reminds me, that i am really lucky to live near this wonderful city (neighboorhood) and habe all the really nice places just half an hour away from me by public traffic (train). And i can tell you all, that the vibe and atmosphere stayed the same all over the years. Hamburg is called "Das Tor zur Welt", "The gate to the world" and that fits pretty well. It is unique and pretty wonderful in a way.
And even after nearly 40 years there are many things to find and explore. Thank you!

1:19 The floating piers were once the passenger terminal of the harbor. They served as embarkation facilities for trans-Atlantic liners and cruise ships. I remember that we went there to greet my great-aunt who had arrived from the USA. Today the cruise ships use another section further up the river, the Cruise Terminal. So this area is called "Landungsbrücken" (landing bridge/pier). It was necessary to make the piers floating because the Elbe river raises and falls with the tide. (Just like the Thames in London.) Hamburg is actually the spot up to where the influence of the tides go. For freighters which load and unload on the opposite bank there are rigid piers because they are unloaded by cranes.

The contraption for raising the bridge is actually a flood protection door. It will close if the water level in the river/harbour reaches a certain height. The flood protection in the area was recently raised to an average of 8m over sea level. Everything in the area that look like stairs leading to the water are in fact to protect the city behind it 😊

You can use your subway ticket from the Landungsbrücken to travel on several ships, e.g. the ferry to Övelgönne. There you are opposite all the cranes and can see the large container ships. You can sit in a bar on the beach, have something to eat and drink and watch the ships.

Reeper means "Rope Maker" in Low German (Plattdüütsch). So the Reeperbahn is where fishermen used to go to get their fishing nets fixed. Among "other" things, which is what the Reeperbahn is known for nowadays.

56:00 Nuh, those Bridges do not get raised. The contraption you see there are massive floodgates, to be closed when there is a "Sturmflut", a Storm with winds coming from NW that presses the Water into the Port. You are basically walking along a flood wall there, all those stairs and things. ;-)

From 1874 to 1876, the Nikolaikirche was the tallest structure in the world until it was surpassed by the cathedral in Rouen, France, which held the title until 1880, when it was surpassed by the Kölner Dom, which in turn was surpassed by the Washington Monument in 1884, which then lost the title to the Eiffell Tower in 1889.

You wanna compare Hamburg to any US city, it's definitely gonna be Seattle: Similar weather (supposedly a lot of rain), ferries are a mode of public transportation, people are considered a little "cold", economy powerhouse, huge harbor, aviation is one of the biggest industries, etc.

1:01:29 You are right about that looking like a WW2 Eagle. The Restaurant is in a "Rundbunker", a round Air Raid Bunker. They were built with a brick exterior and a pointed roof, to fit better into the City's architecture - years before the War. Other Bunkers built later did not feature such consideration (like the huge FlaK Tower in St. Pauli).
That Eagle is indeed a Nazi Eagle, the Swastika in that round space below is chiseled away.

You asked for beer and food recommendations.
There is a number of small craft beer breweries in Hamburg: Kehrwieder, Landgang, Wildwuchs come to mind.
From the harbor boulevard a bit further down the Elbe there is the Überquell brewery, where you can not only try their excellent beers, but also get pretty good pizza.
In the other direction there is Gröninger, where you can get pretty hearty food with their own beers.
A bit more commonly available in supermarkets and bars is Ratsherrn, which has established itself in a good spot as kind of a compromise for people who want something a bit more interesting, but don't want to pay an arm and a leg for some fancy craft beer.
The two best known brands are Astra and Holsten, but those are more on the low-end of mediocre mass produced beers. Astra kind of works in a small, dark and sleazy St. Pauli bar, though. A better alternative not from Hamburg but not too far away and roughly in the same price category would be Flensburger.
Some restaurants: If you like sea-food, are not on a tight budget and able to book a table a while in advance, Henssler Henssler is top-tier. Not in the same price category but still excellent is the Italian restaurant Il Vagabondo. The oldest Italian restaurant in Hamburg is Cuneo, which is also really nice and close to the police station at Reeperbahn. Syrian food is really good at Fardi. If you crave a Hamburger in Hamburg, there is a place called Brooklyn Burger Bar, that also has some nice beers on the menu. Mr Cherng is an Asian place that offers an all-you-can-eat deal that includes sushi at a decent quality for the price.

1:13:00 The Pier you walked on there, the stores and restaurants - it all floats! 😄
It depends on the tide how steep the walk bridges to it are.
As for the (old rock) building, that is the main part of Landungsbrücken. It used to be the main Terminal for Oceanliners, a ton of emigrants from across Europe departed here for America. Too complex a thing to discuss here, I recommend Wikipedia.
Part of it is the "Old Elbe Tunnel", the Dome Building next to it, which features an elevator for Carriages/Cars. A feat of engineering at that time.
BTW, included in a Transit Day-Ticke (or Deutschlandticket) are trips with the Ferries across the Port. A nice way to get to see the port, and go to Blankenese, a hillside Stairs Quarters along a sandy Elbe Beach.
1:31:00 The hill you stand on there... There are no such natural hills in the area, that is the remnant of the huge Wallanlagen, Hamburg's Fortifications.

1:11:46 you are right, this building has quite some history. The first wooden pier was build in 1839. Later the HAPAG (famous for their Hamburg New York Line) and others, transported goods and passengers to the Americas from here. With bigger ships, it was later expanded. The landing pier it has now (the one floating on the water) was inspired by the harbour of Liverpool. Hamburg always had and has a strong connection to other port cities around the world

The HHA (Hamburger Hochbahn, Elevated Rail) goes roughly 50-50 elevated/above ground, and underground. Those elevated Sections around the harbour... Unlike the S-Bahn (operated by the DB), the HHA is incredibly efficient, and during the War Bombings was incredibly resiliant. A section of the Harbour viaduct fell during a bombing attack in 1943 - withing 10 days the line was operational again! Like, wth? Other Lines, as that to Hammerbrook had to be given up, it was (like the entire neighborhood there) destroyed beyond repair. The S-Bahn runs there since 1984, though.

Fun fact: The name of the street "Jungfernstieg" (23:00) means something like "damsel path". Originally it was a nickname as one can guess. From the late 18th century onwards the well-to-do Hamburg families would take their daughters out there for strolls on Sunday afternoons to present them to potential well-to-do husbands by walking up and down that street. Just imagine the sight of people who all looked as if they came from novel by Jane Austen or later Charles Dickens in their tailcoats, stiff collars, stovepipe hats, walking sticks, the ladies in their crinolines, shading their pale faces with bonnets and parasols. The poorer layers of society must have been roling with laughter. North-German humour is very dry and direct, to say the least. Fun fact within that fun fact: The Jungfernstieg was Germany's first tarmac street. Maybe the well-to-do had no interest in puddle jumping.

The buildings at the harbor have had several functions and some of them still do. It used to be a shipping station with a terminal building. The water level is displayed on the tower. The Elbe has a tidal range and this is on average 2.50 meters. The area below, which is connected to the bridges, floats and rises and falls depending on the water level. The bridges are movable and, like yours (high water), almost horizontal. But they can also go down at an angle when the water is low. At the end of the buildings is the entrance to the old Elbe tunnel (dome building) with car elevators and a staircase. The tunnel connects the landing stages with the harbor. At the moment, however, only bicycles and pedestrians are allowed through the tunnel.

51:08 Those high sections of the "Underground" (Untergrundbahn or short: U-Bahn) is called Hochbahn in German and is equivalent to the 'El' (from elevated trains) in New York or the 'L' in Chicago. The 'L' refers to the loop the elevated lines form in Chicago around the innermost city quarter. Which is therefore also called 'Loop'. Hamburg has a "Ring" of tracks which is much larger than the Loop. The elevated sections skimming the harbor are part of it. Because of its length there were lines running the loop. Then the lines were re-arranged so that they started on the outer parts of Hamburg, used part of the Ring to cross the city center and ended more or less in the opposite part of the outskirts.

If you're visiting Hamburg you should eat some "Fischbrötchen" or "Currywurst mit Pommes rot weiss" and of course "Holsten knallst am dollsten", but "Astra Urtyp" ist the best beer in Hamburg 😉
Oh and in Hamburg a "Radler" is called "Alsterwasser"!

13:40 That is the Alster, a river, actually, that got dammed up even centuries ago to form a reservoir to drive mills and pumps for water. Its upper reaches are still free flowing and together with other smaller streams and a maze of canals and "Fleete" (utilized waterways) once were important for local navigation but today for leisure boats mostly. Private motorboats are banned on most of them. Famous are the Alster-swans. They are taken care of by the City of Hamburg and that means that in autumn they are caught and taken to a sanctuary where they are kept safe, well-fed and warm. The Alster Lake is separated by two bridges, the smaller part closer to the city centre is called Binnenalster (binnen=inside, indoors) and the big one is the Außenalster (außen=outer).

56:00 Those are rigid bridges. The only lifting bridge in Hamburg is the Kattwykbrücke. It is for trains running in the harbor area.
What you call contraption is the winch that moves the gates. Those bulky things run on the rails you see in the pavement. They are closing the street off from the bridge to keep the water out during high tides. You will see comparable structures along the waterfront. E.g. the many stairs are the result of dams that form a continuous barrier to the water. 30 years ago the area was all flat and the water could enter the city doing a lot of damage. Where traffic needed to cross the barrier on a lower level there are those sliding (rolling) gates you saw before.

What a cool video about Hamburg! It is not my hometown, but I already visited it two times. 😍 🙋 You could also visit all the northern islands of Germany.🌞🙋 Not so many Americans go there and know about, I guess. It really would be something very special too in videos. I was born on the island Rügen and also know the island Hiddensee very well.
And did you already know that we have another interesting water area: Der Spreewald ? A region crossed by many, many rivers. The people who live there are called: die Sorben (the sorbs). And it is nearby the smaller cities Lübben and Lübbenau.🙋

Hello Conner! Neither Amsterdam nor Hamburg are situated at the Atlantic Ocean. Amsterdam is situated at the Ijmeer which is a huge lake. The North Sea (which is a marginal sea of the Atlantic) is 30 km west of Amsterdam, in Ijmuiden, which is the port of Amsterdam. Hamburg is situated at the rivers Alster and Elbe, and the Elbe flows into the North Sea which is 80 km northwest of Hamburg. Greetings and love from Mönchengladbach, Sabine

As long as you can feel the tide, it´s at the sea. Period.
And then there are these Dykes. Guess where the open sea would be without them.

Hamburg also has a pretty good English speaking movie theater called the savoy (I think it's somewhat of a chain?). Vacations in a foreign country are typically not the time to go to the movies, but if you do, can absolutely recommend it (and the nachos and beer you get there). Another cool thing around 57:14, there a boat anchored there that actually houses a comedy club.

1:27:46 right below this building is the mojo club - if you notice the lines behind the white audi/green bins - like on the concrete - there are kind of "half arches" that raise by 45° revealing a hidden staircase that leads into the club. Cool thing. You like literally walked above it and didn't notice it at all. You can see the clubs emblem on the entrances tho.
1:29:49 yeah thats pretty much a business building- the atlantic haus - also the one on the river side is "Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency" - followed by other institutes (for safety and medicine)
You'd have to walk 5 minutes to the right and then the appartments would appear

Hi Connor, nice that you like my City, but you have missed yet very great sights, like the Old Elb-Tunnel at Landungsbrücken: The Tunnel starts at Landungsbrücken und ends on nthe other side of the river, it is renovated now, but the left tube is free fpr pedestraians nad bikes. Also from Landungsbrücken you can use the Ferries: Best you take the one to "Fingenwerdere" (Airbus), the ticket is inside the HVV-S-U-Transport system included. From Finkenwerder you can go back to the other side in thre west to a museum port, from where you can walk 1,5 hours along the river to Blankenese in the west: A very nice part of historical living houses connected by small ways and stairs. Here you must have a fish roll....
Maybe on the next ime, greets, Ralph: The real Hamburger...

36:10 Libertatem quam peperere maiores digne studeat servare posteritas [May posterity strive to preserve with dignity the freedom which our fathers acquired.]
1:00:00 Hamburg has three big breweries: Astra, Holsten and Ratsherren and a few smaller ones: Kehrwieder, Wildwuchs, Landgang, Blockbräu, Gröninger, Circle& Brewery. I don't know if the last two also sell bottled beers. I don't know if there are more. I would recommend trying them all.
1:00:35 The MS Cap San Diego is a general cargo ship, situated as a museum ship in Hamburg, Germany. Notable for her elegant silhouette, she was the last of a series of six ships known as the White Swans of the South Atlantic. It still sea worthy and financed and maintained by a club of private marine enthusiasts.
2:07:35 Yes, that's it! It is the landing stage of the HVV ferry line 72. From there you can go to the Baumwall subway station and change there to the HVV ferry line 62. With this one it is the longest trip you can make with the ferries. Down the Elbe along the Landungsbrücken, Fischmarkt, Dockland, Övelgönne, Finkenwerder. This trip takes about 45 minutes for one leg and is paid for with your HVV ticket for any bus, U+S-Bahn or Deutschland-Ticket.
