In this special #MaidenMonday edition of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to 'both sides' of Iron Maiden's The Trooper. The song is from their 1983 album Piece of Mind. And, The B side of this single is Cross-Eyed Mary, Iron Maiden's cover of the classic song by Jethro Tull. We're celebrating out 1-year anniversary of doing music reaction videos this week, and we couldn't let the week go by without listening to some music by Iron Maiden. Up the Irons!

Cross Eyed Mary is a good example of how to make a cover song. It's got the Maiden sound all over it, while still being recognizable as the original.

Maiden's version is missing the space in the song which in Tull's version gives the sense of spooky isolation that a cross-eyed person might have suffered in society in the past. Maiden fills it in with guitar sound. It gives the song a different feel. Still a good version.

For me, one of the things that has always "sold" this song was Steve Harris' galloping bass line...makes it so easy to imagine the charge of cavalry.

Totally agree. That's why it's so disappointing that this particular effect doesn't really come across in this particular recording. I was looking for it but just didn't hear it. One of the reasons I've never been a big fan of Maiden's three-guitar setup.

My sister is a nurse. She told me after an Iron Maiden concert, Bruce had a sore throat. And she needed to go back to their trailer and check him out. She said the trailer itself was DISGUSTING. But other than that, Bruce did behave himself. Didn't try to grab her or anything.

"The Trooper" is Maiden's adaptation of the poem "Charge of the Light Brigade", about an episode in the Crimean War of the 1850's. "Cross Eyed Mary" is about a teen hooker.

It's sad how the song is relevant in 21 century Britain. Piece of mind is an underrated album with no particular weak points. I recommend you to listen to Revelations from this album. Still life is also worth listening.
A word on how Iron Maiden influenced your TH-cam career. There are a bunch of mediocre YT "reactors" who reacted to Iron Maiden and were just boring or at most a little funny just for a moment. What I'm trying to point is that your choice to dive into the sea of pop music let your audience notice you. But this wouldn't have significant meaning without your competence and personality.

    • @herbertwest9626
      @herbertwest9626 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

It's not underrated. Why should it be? It's a great album of course, it sold very well, they still play a lot of songs from it and for a lot of Maiden fans it's one of their best albums. So not underrated at all... ;-)

@@kevinmichael2593 One bad song compared to eight great songs on the album is bearable. And they had a few let downs especially in the 1990s for example "The Angel and the Gambler" or some other of the BB-era. Even before with Bruce on "No prayer..." and "Fear of the Dark" they had some cringeworthy fillers. Nobody's perfect. Not even Maiden. And I've been a fan since the early 1980s.

I was in bootcamp when this album came out and it was about the same time as DIO's Holy Diver.
1979 - 84 was an absolutely wicked era for old school metal. We couldn't have asked for better stuff.
Trooper, Run to the Hills and DIO's Rainbow In The Dark, all burn like a top fuel dragster from start to finish.
These songs are epic in vibe and reminiscent of Sabbath's Paranoid.
Get in, buckle up and hang on for your life, because it's time to Rockin Roll..

I listened to this in 1983 when it came out, at one of the most scary times of the cold war. The Soviets had shot down KAL-007, killing a US congressman. In my high school "current history" class, they brought a holocaust survivor, and those films of the concentration camps were terrifying. As tense as all of that was, it was even worse - The Soviets went to DEFCON1 based on a false alarm, and the fact that we didn't get barbecued in my senior year was due to Stanislav Petrov, a lieutenant colonel who managed to stop it.
But we weren't done yet. NATA scheduled "Able Archer", a realistic DEFCON 1 training exercise. But the Soviets misinterpreted it, and basically went to DEFCON 1 themselves again.
We were all terrified of the Soviets, but had no idea that they were just as terrified by us. Even Reagan didn't get it - he had no idea. When he learned of their reaction, he mellowed is rhetoric and started negotiating with them. That led to the 1985 summit with Gorbachev, an the rest is history.
To me in 1983, "The mighty roar of the Russian Guns" was straight up this fear. Maiden of course with formalize this a year later with "2 Minutes to Midnight".

Great reaction, Doug. Some history about the Charge of the Light Brigade that not many may know: At the Battle of Balaclava, Baron Raglan (yes, he of the sleeve pattern) gave orders to Earl Lucan, his cavalry commander. Lucan in turn passed the orders to his brother-in-law, the Earl of Cardigan (yes, he of the sweater style). Lucan and Cardigan despised each other, and so the orders were passed incompletely, leading to the destruction of Cardigan's light cavalry brigade in a noble but utterly avoidable and pointless gesture of a truly messy war.

This is brilliant, I hadn't realised that I've been with this channel since pretty much the start. It's difficult for me to express how much I love this band, they've been a constant companion for nigh on 40 years now and I really can't/don't want to imagine a world in which they're no longer out there. En Vivo is another classic, immense live recording! I love that there's so much clarity in the guitars with Davey on the left, Jan on the right and then Adrian and Steve right in front, perfectly entwined and harmonious. I remember reading somewhere once that Metal is essentially Classical music + electricity, there are many stripped down classical renditions of Maiden songs here on TH-cam which demonstrate the validity of that hypothesis, IMHO. Cheers Doug, your channel is an absolute delight, always. He knows what he's talking about plus he has the intellectual background. That can't be said about "hip-hoppers react to heavy metal" and other fakers ... ;-) That's something that always p....d me off, people using metal songs to "react" to them on Yt, just because they know that it will bring them more viewers.

In 1984, I used the lyrics to The Trooper in my junior year HS English class when we dabbled in Poetry. My English teacher and I were sort of friendly at odds with each other. Mr Jones and my dad were both athletic, my dad played football and he also played tennis, specifically with Mr. Jones. Mr Jones... he was enamored with my poem and read it in front of the entire class. The entire time I was convinced one of the other kids was going to say "Hey! that's Iron Maiden" and it never happened. In front of 15-20 kids he said "That was pretty dark stuff Robby but it was structured so well that I had to give it an A" The next Spring, right before graduation the "Band" my friends and I created played "The Trooper" and "Shout at the Devil" in front of the entire student body. I will never forget being intensely focused on playing this on guitar, it was no easy thing to do at 17, even after months of practice and guitar lessons to specifically play this song. I was probably holding my mouth open, drooling in total concentration until I saw Mr. Jones on the side with his arms crossed and the look of disappointment as he immediately realized that these were the words of Steve Harris and not Robby. I immediately just got totally into it and it became so much easier after that. Mr. Jones had admitted "I read this to my wife, I had to swallow that the offsping of my HS nemesis was a really talented poet in the making and now I know it was plagiarized from some rock star. The thing is that now I have to swallow that you can actually play guitar and it pains me" or something close to that. No matter, he was also the German teacher and he told the story of my poem to that group without me there as I never took German. Then in the HS newspaper he commented on the band saying "They appear to be talented but were distasteful and insensitive" It was a badge of honor. My dad just said "So he is still pissed off about me eliminating him in 1962 huh?" 😂

I never realized that I found your channel on your very first music reaction....I watched that vid, and subscribed immediately 😁
I found an interview with Ian Anderson recently where he talks about the Aqualung album. I'm paraphrasing, of course, but he said that Tull was recording this album in the same studio that Led Zepplin was recording Led Zepplin 4. They were downstairs and Led Zepplin was upstairs (could be the other way around, foggy on the details 😟). On the day that they cut the solo for Aqualung, just as they were cutting the solo, Jimmy Page stepped into the studio to say hi. Previously to Page walking in, Martin Barr had been having trouble nailing the a few of the solos for some of the songs on Aqualung so Ian would just cut a flute solo for the song instead. Ian specifically mentions Cross Eyed Mary as one of the songs that this happened on (Ian doesn't say so, but I suspect that Locomotive Breath was one of those songs as well). He also goes on to say in the interview that Jimmy Page stepping into the studio is why Martin Barr's solo is so good in that song... He just needed the proper motivation...lol. Given that, I suppose that Cross Eyed Mary could have been initially envisioned to sound much this way 🤔
The interview came from the internet, so take it with a grain of salt, but I thought that was a pretty cool bit of lore if true.

A British officer was captured during the Napoleonic war. "Why do you wear red when it makes you stand out and a target for our snipers?" asked the French captaine. "Well" said the Brit, "If I'm wounded the men will not see my blood and that is good for morale."
"Magnifique." said the Frenchman. And from that day on French officers wore brown trousers!
Into the valley of death rode the six hundred.

A couple of cool things about "The Trooper" that you might not have picked up on: The "Oh" is meant to signify the moaning and screaming of the soldiers as they are injured and dying. Also, notice the galloping bass line. Steve Harris used that to represent the horse's gallop. It's now his signature sound. He's the king of the galloping bass.

Adrian and Janick double the first solo because H played it on the original studio recording, but he left the band for his own projects in 1990 so Janick joined the band and took over his guitar parts for old songs. The do the same thing for The Evil That Men Do (otherwise, H does *most* of his old solos, though Janick does a few as well).

Big text alert! To better express how I personally appreciate the content ever since you started learning about Maiden and also to show how can some bands have such an impact on people all over the world.
I grew up listening to my dad's Maiden vinyl collection. As I was 4 y.o. my dad would sit me in front of the music box we had, with the vinyls which had the songs lyrics inside and a small English dictionary, I'd sit there for hours listening to the songs, rewriting the lyrics and translating them to Portuguese (Brazilian). That shaped my ears, and also my language abilities far beyond I could ever think at the time.
I first got to see Maiden live in São Paulo in 2008 when I was 12 years old and I couldn't stop crying the entire show, tears of joy. I've been to 5 more maiden concerts ever since and still can't hold those tears feeling the energy. It's just something unbelievable and probably the best experience I've had in my life.
The content in they're lyrics did instigate me to learn more about history, specially about war. As I began to search for those references and also a song called Aces High, I fell in love with airplanes which with time led me to become an Aeronautical engineer. So it's safe to say that this band helped me draw the path I ended up walking thus far!
I'd like to thank you once again, because in every maiden video you make, to see the excitement you have after listening to the songs, is just a big reminder to myself of what this band means to me and so many others. I know all their songs by heart and I can never forget the words in them.
Piece of Mind is personally my favorite album, alongside with Powerslave.
    Thank you Doug!
