"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to
rise up and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits
them better. This is a most valuable, a most sacred right - a right which we
hope and believe is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases
in which the whole people of an existing government may choose to exercise it.
Any portion of such people, that can, may revolutionize, and make their own of
so much of the territory as they inhabit."

The Virginia Declaration of Rights clearly states , Government can not suspend laws without the consent of the people , Secede now you have a legal right.

The secession and Civil war is like 5 blind men examining an elephant. Each man feels and describes different parts of the beasts body and reaches a different conclusion about the issue. They are all valid in their own way.

And it's where General Lee accepted his appointment to Command of all Virginia state forces.

The University of Richmond was good enough to make Virginia`s secession convention into a searchable database. If you search for "Tarriffs," which is the most popular alternative theory for the cause of the Civil War, you get 90 results. If you search "States Rights," you get about 50. If you search "Slavery," you get about 1500. If they didn`t secede over slavery, then they spent an awful lot of time talking about slavery at that big meeting where they decided whether or not to secede.

@M.J .H Bobby Lee was NOT an emancipator of slaves, you fucking tool-chest.🙄 He quite famously oversaw the whipping of one of his escaped slaves that was recaptured, because he was too much of a white-gloved dandy to swing the whip himself.
No, the thing that they were debating was whether or not they were going to secede from the United States. That is why they called it the "Secession Convention."🙄 I'm kind of surprised that you missed that.
They did not interrupt their debate over whether or not to commit treason to instead discuss their moral objections to slavery.
Wealthy Virginian politicians as a rule were not opposed to slavery.
The reason that slavery was discussed so much in the SECESSION CONVENTION was because the perceived threat to slavery presented by Abraham Lincoln and the Republicans was the entire reason for the secession Crisis.

@M.J .H The only slaves that Lee ever owned are the ones that he inherited from his Father-in-Law, and he freed them because he was legally bound to do so, because that was a clause in his father-in-law's will. And no, he NEVER advocated for abolition. You are just repeating a baseless rumor that you heard and never bothered to verify. You cannot find me a source where Lee did any such thing.
Also no, you are WRONG. Virginia jumped off of the fence as soon as Lincoln called for his 75,000 volunteers, months before a single Federal soldier set foot on Virginia soil.
Stop being wrong about stuff that is super easy to look up. You're embarrassing yourself.

@M.J .H Oh wow, your "Source" is a SCENE FROM A MOVIE?🤣🤣🤣🤣 And not just any movie,.but the most blatant Confederate propaganda since Birth of a Nation And a movie that failed spectacularly at the box office, to boot..🤣🤣🤣 Wow, you really are a joke!
No, once again, the Convention voted for secession after the surrender of Sumter and Lincoln's call for volunteers. You have still failed to provide any evidence that any Federal troops moved aggressively into Virginia before she declared for the Confederacy.
Yes, Lee was CONVINCED by his WIFE to free the slaves inherited from her father, because it was IN HER FATHER'S WILL. You admit right there that he was reluctant to free those slaves.
And before he was convinced to set those slaves free as stipulated in his father-in-law's will, he paid bounty hunters to recapture several escapees, and personally oversaw their whipping.
      And of course, just like every other Lee worshiper, you trot out the "Slavery is a great moral and political evil" quote,.but then you DISHONESTLY leave out the very next sentence and the conclusion of that letter;
"I think it however a greater evil to the white man than to the black race, & while my feelings are strongly enlisted in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more strong for the former. The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence. Their emancipation will sooner result from the mild & melting influence of Christianity, than the storms & tempests of fiery Controversy."
So, according to Lee, Southern slavery was more harmful to white people than black people.🤮 And nothing should be done to bring about their emancipation until some kind of vague nebulous divine intervention.🙄
Yeah, I don't think Bobby Lee saw eye to eye with Frederick Douglas.

Did you watch this video? They voted no to secede when the only issue was African slavery. They secede only when Lincoln declares war. Those references to slavery are references to their own enslavement. In William fucking Freehling says Virginia didn't secede over slavery then they didn't secede over slavery.

@@onepiecefan74 They rode the fence until they were sure the Lower South was serious. Then, when it was clear there was going to be a war, they jumped to the side that best represented their interests....
Which was the preservation of slavery.
