The seat foam was new for this year and the seat is softer than the 2022s. I rode my 22 XCR back to back with my 23 switchback and the seat was very noticeable.
I’d really like to test ride this sled. It’s not for me, I have someone specific in mind that I’d drag along. This would be a good candidate for Polaris to find a way to wedge the EPS from their Sportsman under the hood.
Also comparing to my cousins 2009 Yamaha moto 4 stroke I say the engine is easier to get at in the Polaris ProStare Indy S4 XC than his Yamaha because he has to take off more plastics parts to get at his engine which he said is the only problem with it
@@markgregoryrugman7136, there is/was a lot of plastic around the Genisis engine in the Yamaha snowmobiles. I still have a 2005 Vector. Runs well and lots of power. It was intimidating to pop the hood. Everything was hidden away under plastic. Not like, say, my 1997 Phazer II, where everything was pretty much exposed.
That is why i want 4 stroke sled that has is easy to get at the engine and the 2024 Polaris ProStare Indy S4 XC has that option and im not wasting 20 minutes broken down on the trails @sheldonnicholl3599
I'm curious if you know how accurate the speedo is? GPS verified? The reason I ask, is 80 real verses 90 with a 14% error would be just fine. Hello. Unfortunately I did not GPS test it for speed. We had everything set to do the fuel consumption test at the same time as this ride but I failed to reset the trip before we left. IT sounds like a four-stroke to me. I'm glad you pointed the lack of sound out, I will talk with the gentleman who helps edit the videos about that for future videos so we can hear the sleds more.
@@Levi_LaVallee Thanks for updating the video to include some engine sounds. Sounds better than the previous Weber engine. I ride a 2022 900R Skidoo which has lots of jam, but the reality is a sled with a lot less hp still gets you back for dinner at the same time. Hoping it is good on fuel for those big mile days.
I planned to test that so I topped the tank off and was going to check it, but I failed to set the trip when we left. When we filled up it definitely took less than the 650 we had with, but we did not average 60+. I''ll make note of that for a video in the future. 👍🏼

Hi. I was waiting 2 years ago to buy sled from Polaris with 4 strokes. So decide to go with skidoo renegade 600 ACE….plan to change for the Polaris voyageur S4 (like the 146 in track)….still making studying about it. What do i expect about gas mileages on grooming trail average condition??
thats a great question and I meant to have tested that on the day we did this video, but unfortunately I didn't hit the reset on the trip before we left. The only thing I know is it used significantly less than the 850s we had with.
In all honesty this sled is going after the Yamaha Viper riders who want a better ride with decent power. They don't expect it to be the first one across a lake. They want it to be a sled that rides like a Cadillac so long mile days are a dream and expect the motor to run trouble free for 20,000 miles. Levi will this do that?
Hello Mark. I can't speak to whether it will go 20k miles first hand as I have maybe 200 miles on the engine, but knowing the success Polaris has had with their four stroke engines in off-road makes me very confident in the engine. regarding the ride and ergonomics, the Matryx platform is outstanding! I love how how easy it is to move around on the Matryx.
How did you find so many old guys that just started riding. I'm 55 years old and I've been riding snowmobiles for 49 years. Where are those guys with the lifetime experience ?
Bob has been riding since he was a teenager so I'd say at least 50 years of riding and Dave told me he started riding in 1972. Does 50+ years of experience qualify? Or if lifetime of experience is based on percentage of life riding, then I would qualify as the lifetime of experience starting. ;) Dave Shaw and Sharron are the newer riders, which i thought we had a good mix of rider experience in hopes of relating to a larger audience of rider.
@@Levi_LaVallee I only saw the guys saying the have been only riding for the fewer years. 1972 was when I went with my dad to Ace Hardware and picked up the new Ski Doo Nordic 440.
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
I have ordered a Indy S4 and I’m waiting on it to be delivered to my dealer! I’m a little concerned about seat comfort for a long day of trail riding. Also possible under steering on corners. Any comments?
Hello Jim. I am anxiously awaiting my S4 as well. I have some video ideas for it so I look forward to that. Regarding the seat- I recently went for a 160 mile ride on the North shore of Lake Superior and I was letting the guys try my Boost Assault and something that stood out to me was the difference in in the seat from the one gentleman's 2022 XCR seat (very firm) to the softer seat of the new Boost. Sharon rides a 2021 650 VR1and when she tried the S4 for this video she also commented about how much better the seat felt on the S4 compared to her sled. I few weeks ago I rode with some folks from NY and they turned me on to the heated seats. They swear by them for the long cold days so I am working on getting one to test out. Under Steer- When We took the S4 out last year I didn't notice any understeer. Admittedly, I was not pushing it hard in the trails to see if it understeers. with the additional weight of the 4 stroke engine in the front and the smooth power which makes it harder to pull the front end up, it should keep the front pretty planted. If it becomes an issue for you, go up on carbide on the wear bars or C A skis that bite i bit harder
Yes it corners awesome! This ride was more to test the new engine, but for more on how the Matryx platform handles in the corners I talk more about it in th-cam.com/video/Bmb_ZLgR3Hk/w-d-xo.html . I love the Matryx on the trails!
I dislike polaris for a variety of reasons but the handling n smoothness of the ride really makes up for the flaws. Im a cat rider but cats have flaws as well but the reliability and how easy it is to work on em makes up for that. I used to ride ski doo but over the years i grew to hate the brand. If you're a mechanic you'll know what im talking about. But then again there's no such thing as a junk rig in the past few years. If polaris can slow down a bit n do more testing like arctic cat has then yeah polaris would be able to fix the hiccups on the sleds like sacrificing weight for strength n focusing on the moving parts doing brutal tests then i think polaris would have the strongest most reliable ride. 560lbs is still light and easy to whip around in the powder. Its just my opinion
@LaVallee - i should have been more specific about the rides. I was talking about the 2stroke twin cylinder sleds. Yamaha has a perfect genesis 4stroke engine. Yamaha had the genesis 4 for a very long time but they've done many tweeks n finne tuning to make a very reliable engine. If ski doo and polaris were to team up they would definitely make an unstoppable dominating sled. Btw ski doo isn't a cheap sled its an insane sled, polaris as well. I've already said theres no junk sled all brands have made unbelievable snowmobiles for the past few years
I run my 1998 polaris xlt special 600 WITH high octane ⛽...not as fast as my friends 2005 xlt.. but I'm satisfied with the performance...I replaced my carbs and my track....144 picks ... New shocks and skis...my friend had it for a weekend and he commented about the similarities of the 2.. top end was not as high but ...low to mid range is amazing...0 - 100kph in under 4 much lighter....so when I go full throttle...my arms and hands get sore....my buddy hooked me up with a homemade kit that pairs my gloves with the handlebars........ I can now feel the "G" force like I'm cornering in a Porsche.. Anyone else have this Modified setup?
Weight is everyones question. This thing is supposedly 100lbs heavier than a 2 stroke. Your gonna notice that yet hardly a mention about it except the 1 guy.
Yes it is heavier than a 2 stroke, like most every four-stroke is. Would it be fair to say that if it was of concern regarding how it handled, Sharron who was the smallest of the group would have noticed? If you are looking for a light feeling sled to race through the trail and ditch bang hard, this is not the engine.... Although I did give it a heck of a ditch banging rip trying to beat my nephew to my house who was on the road driving a truck. haha . For cruising the trails with a smooth, none intimidating power, this engine is perfect.
Sorry but I would have like to see at least 1 younger person who like to rip it. Just to see if the excitement is still there with this motor from a younger person perspective. If it still feels nimble and rips with the reliability of a 4 stroke
@@Levi_LaVallee sorry bro, I didn't finish watching the vid. I finished and saw your perspective. Very informative, and appreciate the content! You definitely now how to rip a sled!😆
Yes I would agree, but there are also many positives that come with four stroke engines. I remember when four strokes started becoming popular in dirt bikes. They were heavier but they were easy to ride. And they made big power. Now 4 strokes rule dirt bikes. snowmobiles have a much smoother power delivery in general compared to a dirt bike, and the 4 stroke makes it even smoother.
haha As one might guess, I am a performance sled guy. But many riders ride differently than me and have no need for a sled that goes faster than 80mph. This engine is will work great for them.
The only time you hit 80 is mostly on a lake , possibly a straight away with good visibility. I’ll take a top speed of 80 which I probably won’t hit and be able to trail ride without bringing oil and getting more miles to a tank
For me personally, I prefer speed and aggressive riding so I have ridden a lot of sleds geared more towards that. Unfortunately this was the first time I experienced an under 100Hp four stroke snowmobile so it was harder for me to give it a rating due to not being able to compare it to an equivilent machine. Even though I thought the engine worked great, was very smooth, and very easy to control, I scored it a conservative 8 because of my lack of knowledge riding 4 stroke snowmobile engines.
@@Levi_LaVallee so if you could pick any sled for free what would be your top 2 sled choices? I rode 30 years ago and thinking about getting a new sled and i don't want to make a financial mistake. I want quick, fast, trail, good suspension, comfortable to ride all day and fits a 6 foot 1 body at 175 lbs.
@@tomcat6933 That is very helpful to hear. I would definitely not recommend a S4 four stroke as I do not consider it quick or fast. The new sleds " rider forward" platforms are much better for taller riders than the sleds 30 years ago where you sat towards the back of the machine , which put a lot of stress on your back and put taller folks knees by the handle bars. Comfortable, fast, all day riding I would go Vr1. They are as smooth as they get on the trail and you can get a 650, 850, and turbo 850. To ball park speed from 650 to turbo - about 105 to 120+ Mph. And at 175lbs the suspension should work really well in stock form. IF you are looking for on and off trail riding I would recommend the Switchback assault 146. Works great for both on and off trail but not as smooth on trail and wheelies more than the Vr1. Another option that doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the VR1 has but is still great on the trail is the Indy XC. you can get a 650 or 850 in the XC so still very powerful. I like to jump things on my snowmobile and ride hard through bumps so I am a fan of the XCR model. Suspension is a bit stiffer so its not as comfortable on the trail in the bumps but it handles the bigger moguls and jumps better than the VR1. THere are a few different options with distinct differences, but a couple videos that may help would be - the XCR vs Vr1 and the VR1 650 first ride. toth-cam.com/video/OdiMvf31Tg0/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/Bmb_ZLgR3Hk/w-d-xo.html Let me know if you have any other questions and hopefully I can help .
@@Levi_LaVallee toss a bunch of 30-50yo on it who ride 600s and dont tell them what s4 is. This video made it seem like its only good for those ready to retire. Im sure it is targeted toward that group but its really limiting your audience. . My wife is 33 and would prob enjoy this sled just as much as her 600 axys.
@@PatriotBrad That is a great idea. When creating this video my goal was to show people how smooth the power is and how easy it is to control. The riders from the snowmobile club that helped with this video are riders that I thought would appreciate an engine like this. I have owned many 600s and 650s over the years and I believe the S4 would be great for any trail rider that is the 50-60mph top speed or less rider, that does not ride aggressively. The s4 is much mellower than 600 or 650 engines which are fast and accelerate hard if you hammer down. The 6's have become the engine for many wives due to the lack of engine options and the 600s and 650s are way more engine than what is needed for many riders. After riding the S4, I ordered a S4 for my wife and she has been driving 600s and 650s for the last few years and she is 28 now... again for the 9th time. haha
Maybe add some younger people to the review for a more full review. You have a bunch of geezers that like to ride slow as shit that probably think 90 is like going plaid. lmao Personally, as a younger rider I think I'm going 2 stroke. Better performance overall than 4 strokes. I feel 2 stroke = performance and younger crowd and 4 stroke = old geezer slow riding trail crowd...lol
The S4 is in the "under 100 HP" category so it is not considered a high performance engine. With that said it is geared towards riders with less experience, riders who are looking for smooth power, and more fuel economy for longer rides with out having to fuel up as often. Yes the riders who were with me like to ride at a slow pace than some, but me on the other hand I love riding fast and aggressive. With in the video i make reference to how this is not a high performance engine and it is for a rider who is looking for smooth delivery and easy riding. Young or old , if thats what you are after, this engine is for you. @Levi_LaVallee yes and that is why I am looking for that sled and it's pretty affordable for a new sled
Be nice to do a side-by-side comparison of this with 4-strokes from Ski-doo, Yamaha, and Arctic Cat.
I herd that the 4 stroke Ski-Doo has a hoter temperature on the back end of it then the polaris ProStare Indy S4 XC
Great video you guys!
Thanks so much!
I'm curious if you know how accurate the speedo is? GPS verified? The reason I ask, is 80 real verses 90 with a 14% error would be just fine. I ordered 1, but I'm not selling my brand X turbo until I put a few miles on it. Really curious about fuel consumption. Also the sound. I suspect it sounds like a tractor or you'd let us hear it more....LOL. I'm an older guy, but still enjoy a good rip.
I would like to know about fuel consumption ridden at a spirited pace ? High mileage 60+ MPH Quebec type trails. compared to a 650 2s
I planned to test that so I topped the tank off and was going to check it, but I failed to set the trip when we left. When we filled up it definitely took less than the 650 we had with, but we did not average 60+.
I''ll make note of that for a video in the future. 👍🏼
@@Levi_LaVallee Thank you so much for the reply.
@@Levi_LaVallee Id like to see info on that as well please. Maybe some estimates on distance to a Tank... Thanks.
Are you in the Fargo Moorhead area when I lived there it was cass clay counties?
Longville Minnesota
Older I get the slower I ride but it’s just as fun, someday a 4 stroke will be perfect for me,not yet though 😂
haha I've got a few more years of speed in me too! 😉
No doubt a great sled to compete with the 900 ace.
Had a friend from PA switch from Doo to an S4 and he loves it!
Let's go for a atv ride this summer! I have a built Yamaha raptor 770cc, I don't live too far away from your neck of the woods. I live inbeween Polaris industries and arctic cat, let me know if you want to meet some of the engineer's from either... Jack Nelson just retired he is president of the fourtown grygla sportsman club, Mike Konickson. Ect... we can keep it low profile as well
Sounds like a good time!
@@Levi_LaVallee I know that early to get all the info. Polaris know for sure, with all the test they made. Many thanks 👍
Or if lifetime of experience is based on percentage of life riding, then I would qualify as the lifetime of experience starting. ;)
Dave Shaw and Sharron are the newer riders, which i thought we had a good mix of rider experience in hopes of relating to a larger audience of rider.
Under Steer-
When We took the S4 out last year I didn't notice any understeer.
@@Levi_LaVallee thanks very much for that feedback! I did order a heated seat also
I'm guessing it corners very well.
Yes it corners awesome! This ride was more to test the new engine, but for more on how the Matryx platform handles in the corners I talk more about it in th-cam.com/video/Bmb_ZLgR3Hk/w-d-xo.html . I love the Matryx on the trails!
Any idea what kind of RPM that sled was turning when you were wide open ? Just curious
Thats a great question. I didn't even look. Planning another video with the S4 so i'll try to remember to look
i smell future turbo!!!!!! 160++++hp!!!! maybe join the 4 stroke turbo war at 180+ hp in future?
haha We'll have them in RZRs so we'll see!
What’s the price on the S4 ?
I believe it is the same price as a 650. The 850 is a little more then both the 650 and S4
I read it weighs high 500s low 600s why so heavy ?
I'm not sure the official weight but four strokes are usually much heavier than 2 strokes because there is more to them.
@@Levi_LaVallee Got that it's just those numbers seem too high comparing to other 4 strokes. Will have to see what the true numbers are
It's comparable to other 4t. Yamaha makes the heaviest sled last time I witnessed them weighted on the same scale.
Have you backflipped a 4 stroke tho????
Only 4 stroke dirt bikes. in fact the very first thing I ever backflipped to the ground (not foam pit) was a 450 four stroke dirt bike.
I will take a light powerful two stroke over a four stroke any day.
How fast can it go?
around 80mph is the top speeds we saw.
So no backflips with this one?
I got it in the air ditch banging it, but I'm leaning towards probably not flipping it anytime soon. haha
If you like long rides on a frozen beach the swipe right on Levi and the S4 🤣
LOL
Levi we all want to here what it sounds like/so this would be like a 600????
If you remember the 500 2 stroke engine power from previous years (indy 500s etc.) it is around the same power as that.
@@Levi_LaVallee Darn for me to be happy think would have to be at least the same as a 800 thanks for the answer appreciate it.
Miles per gallon ?
Hello. I am have not received mine S4 yet to do that video. Once I get it I will be doing a video on that topic.
mpg?
Hoping to do a mileage video in the future.
@@Levi_LaValleethanks
I'll wait till I see how long the engine last....
Based off the same engines Polaris has in their offroad vehicles, which has helped make them #1 in the industry.
Dislike Polaris, hate Skidoo, and Arctic Cats have flaws. What about Yamaha?
Sounds like a great way to break your wrists in a wreck.
Try hitting the gym so you can just hang onto the bars?
You asked for what you might not have done. I don’t recall seeing a whole lot of watercross videos
Very true! 🤠
Put a turbo on it and I will buy one next year.
that would be sweet!
No 2 stokes I'll day everyday
Sorry but I would have like to see at least 1 younger person who like to rip it. Just to see if the excitement is still there with this motor from a younger person perspective. If it still feels nimble and rips with the reliability of a 4 stroke
In this instance what do mean by "younger person" and "feels nimble and rips"?
@@Levi_LaVallee sorry bro, I didn't finish watching the vid. I finished and saw your perspective. Very informative, and appreciate the content! You definitely now how to rip a sled!😆
@@jessecameron7268 I know I'm not getting any younger but I still feel like I know how to rip. haha
Be perfect with a turbo
now you're speaking my language 😁
The weight is the downside to 4 strokes.
I think it’s fifty or so pounds which isn’t much ,
Doncha know bobby
00:46 ok, their slow. Got it.
haha As one might guess, I am a performance sled guy.
If this was an 8 what is a 10
For me personally, I prefer speed and aggressive riding so I have ridden a lot of sleds geared more towards that.
THere are a few different options with distinct differences, but a couple videos that may help would be - the XCR vs Vr1 and the VR1 650 first ride. toth-cam.com/video/OdiMvf31Tg0/w-d-xo.html

All polaris owners? Huh...
Same thinking for me.

Hi
Hello. Thanks for stopping by.
Put writers online that will actually use them for what therefore
Please describe your opinion of what this sled is for so i can better understand?
i think a bunch of 600 riders would have been better. not just folks over 50....
Interesting. Could you help me understand your opinion ?
After riding the S4, I ordered a S4 for my wife and she has been driving 600s and 650s for the last few years and she is 28 now... again for the 9th time. haha
It's not a true 80 mph machine...fantasy gauge like most sleds.
If you are an aggressive rider - check these videos-

This machine is made for trails , this is the market they are geared towards, he mentioned it numerous times that it’s not an 850 , This sled is perfect for Trails with gas stops not every 50 miles . Why even waste your time watching a 4 stroke video when you know it’s not what you want.
@@MLSPlatforms Well I thought I might want a 4 stroke until I watched this video. lol This video says 4 stroke = slow. But that's kinda unfair, they can be fast.
