    As a former baggage handler, I can assure you that there isn’t a sticker in existence that is going to save your checked baggage from rough handling. My advice? Buy hard-sided, high-quality suitcases. If you must have wheels, make sure they’re integrated into the bag and not riveted to it. You’ll thank me when you still have wheels when you need them.

      Use your clothes to pad fragile items, and put them in the CENTER of your suitcase for maximum cushioning.
      If you’re taking any liquids with you, put it in a Ziploc bag, and then put that bag inside another Ziploc bag. Yup, double bag it, or you may be doing laundry as soon as you get to your destination.
      By the way, in case you haven’t been on a plane since 2001, almost NO full water bottles allowed through security
      AND Each passenger may carry liquids, gels and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or100 milliliters. Each passenger is limited to one quart (1 liter) size bag of liquids, gels and aerosols. Remember to make it a Ziploc bag!

    It's not the saliva produced from chewing gum that causes your ears to pop, it's the motion of your jaw. The motion causes your eustachian tubes (tubes running between your middle ears and nasal cavity/upper throat) to open, allowing for an equalization of pressure. If jaw motion does not clear your ears (equalize the pressure) when taking off or landing, you can try the Valsalva maneuver. Close your mouth, plug your nose, and try to forcefully exhale. This works well when flying with a slight cold. Don't fly with a heavy cold, not only will you make everyone around you sick, you stand a decent chance of blowing out your eardrums or a sinus cavity. I've done both, and they are pretty much not fun.

    • @kathleenmayhorne3183
      @kathleenmayhorne3183 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Or push the small flap on the front of your ear in, to cover the ear canal. Apply pressure and release. This can help pop your own ears.

    • @PhilLesh69
      @PhilLesh69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also forceful swallowing, like gulping down saliva caused from the chewing gum, or even a beverage, can help to re-normalize the pressure between your sinuses,ears and mouth.

      Can confirm-flying with a bad cold is not fun. That said, I had no other choice, otherwise I would have been stuck in China without the rest of my group until I could fly home. 0/10 do not recommend.

    Going to the airport these days will make everyone want to put a belt around their necks. It starts with the security checkpoints and long lines and then missing a connecting flight due to delays with the first flight. Now you end up sleeping at the airport. By sleep I mean a few hours and then you are told to move for the cleaning crew. The worst part is that you paid for this experience.

      Mark, I came here to make a similar comment...I lived over seas for years (back and forth between Greece and Canada, 2 years of that was every 6 weeks 😫)and have otherwise traveled extensively, so I can attest to that first hand... One trip, I actually spoke to a person directly when checking my bags and stated one of my pieces of luggage had a fragile piece in it, she told me to mark the bag and it would be good...well, I swear that having a fragile label on it made them toss it around even harder...the 2 other bags were great and the “fragile” one looked like it was attached TO the plane and wasn’t IN the plane 🤦‍♀️😂.... Not to mention, if everybody followed that advise, there would be too many fragile bags and it would end up on the bottom anyhow!!! hahahaha 🤣😂🤣😂

    The tip about tying a ribbon or putting stickers on your bags really works well. My mum used to tie a length of yarn to the handle of each bag. Plus, her Pullman suitcase had a ton of stickers from the first time we went to Europe, so we never had a problem claiming our luggage. We did have our suitcases sent to Rome instead of Berlin in 1972, but we got them back, so no harm done.

    Hey there! Former ramp agent and ops agent for one of the bigger commercial carriers. Some additional tidbits:
    7) "Fragile" tags are plentiful and don't really have the same effect they used to. When every bag is marked "fragile", none get special treatment.
    9) Ribbons and bows can make your bag stand out, but they also get caught on belt loaders and other bags in the plane's bag compartment. It can and has led to damage to baggage itself.
    16) Early flights are the cleanest flights because the Overnights get the deep clean, where a flight that has been going on all day just gets the trash cans emptied.
    17) Despite common sense, eating a big lunch will actually expand your stomach and make you even hungrier during later meals
    20) Increased pressure altitude dulls taste buds, so everything tastes bland. Snacks are oversalted and seasoned just to have the same taste- another reason to avoid snacks and juices.
    Bonus: The air used to pressurize the cabin is bled from the air going through the engine during cruise.

    These are all great tips. Years ago, I felt so sorry for this little girl who was really hurting because of her ears. I mean you could tell--it was one of those "I hurt" cries. not just because she was bored or cranky. My mum offered some gum, but she was just a bit too young to bew chewing gum . When her mum talked to the stewardess, she got ahold of the captain who was able to bring the plane down to around 25,000 feet--it worked.
    If you don't have gum with you on a plane, yawning helps with the pressure in your ears. My mum always tried to have a few pieces of bubble gum for me if I had trouble with my ears (fortunatunately, my ears do pop, but thus far no pain), but when she didn't, yawning worked fine for me.

    Bruh, former baggage handler here.. we dont got time for that, it's getting tossed where ever it fits. And expect for your suitcase to incur damage over time if you travel often. Because baggage are not packages, they are not treated with care.

    I already pack most of that stuff anyway. You only need one drier sheet over bag. They're potent. Always put a change of clothes, toothbrush, & medications in your carry on! If you military roll, you can fit more clothing. I used to travel with a small pillow that I could tuck into my backpack handle. It's better than the pillowcase idea. It doesn't take up much space & it's more comfortable.
