  • It's Thursday 18th May and Geoff and Vicki venture out again to complete the rest of the Kent stations. There's a castle in Dover, we find out what noise Javelin trains make, a brilliant level crossing, and for the first time on the trip, the weather is not the best ...
    See Tom's Scott video at the same level crossing: • The Level Crossing You...
    Have a look at our website to see our progress map, and loads more information about the trip: www.allthestations.co.uk
    ROUTE: Bromley South, Sittinbourne, Sheerness-on-Sea, Sittingbourne, Dover Priory, Sandwich, Folkestone, Ashford International, Canterbury West, Ramsgate, Margate, Faversham, Canterbury West

    Worth Noting that Vicki appears to have entered the city via Canterbury East (They left via West). Few things for in case you guys ever come back:
    - We cave a Castle! It's a few minutes walk from Canterbury East.
    - On the opposing platform to the one you departed form (West) you can lean over the wall and see an additional line that travels adjacent to the line, then disappears into the bushes - this is the remaining track from the once great 'Crab And Winkle' line which connected Canterbury West to Whitstable. You can actually walk the route, and see the remaining tunnels and trenches where the tracks were!
    - We also (Had) a Canterbury South Station, but it's now just a station house with a path.
    - In answer to Vicki's question - the Cathedral started construction in 1070, so in 52 years it will be 1000 years old!
    - Next time come in the Summer on a clear day, we've so many gorgeous gardens to see in the Summer!

    Geoff and Vicky, there's a self operated level crossing very similar to the one you visited except with swing gates, near Collingham station in Notts on the line from Newark to Lincoln. You can walk to it from Collingham station along a footpath and through a couple of fields in about 15 mins. Love the series.

    Worked for a US pharmaceutical company back in the '80's and for their 25 year anniversary in the UK they hired the Orient Express carriages from Maidenhead to Torquay return, though it was diesel traction rather than steam. Meal on the train was brilliant and spent the day at the Torquay Grand Hotel.

    I'm following this from Toronto in Canada; but it was in Canterbury in 2008 that I had my most thrilling transit moment ever -- at the advice of someone, I sat in the front seat on the top deck of a bus going through the West Gate in Canterbury. You were *convinced* that the roof was going to peel right off the bus, and quite possibly the side walls too. It didn't, of course, the bus drivers are much too competent, but that's the impression given.

  • @jwb_
    @jwb_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    if you like churches and arches that buses used to go under you'll love Beverley up in Yorkshire. Beverley Minster is an amazing church that was used by the film crews for Victoria and Charles III as a substitute for Westminster and North Bar is such a small arch that special buses, nicknamed 'Beverley Buses' where built with a curved roof so that they could just fit. Beverley is also home to the oldest public secondary school in the world, Beverley Grammar School, founded 700AD and school of many famous people including Ken Annakin and Paul Robinson. Hope you do your Beverley when you get to Yorkshire, it really is a wonderful town that I am proud to call home.

    Five lines of English, and seven in French, just proves that some people are very expressive. Reminds me of a 'sight gag' in The Two Doctors, where a sign in Spanish consisting of about three or four words gets translated into two in English, and simply says Keep out. ☺

    I started watching the Manchester stations out of a mild interest but quickly fell down the rabbit hole. What surprised me about these first videos is I know a few of these such as Bromley Newhaven and paddock wood for starters but my visits there were fleeting and long ago. Paddock wood was a disastrous failed tryst for example. Love these. Mrs R thinks I'm mad but I have to apprentice myself on all the Manchester stations soon, only I'm walking the coast as well

    Fun Fact: Between Dover Priory and Ramsgate the main-ish stock for the line is the Javelin, although at peak times Electrostars run as well.
    P. S: The Javelin on that line also does a full loop around the line from St Pancras to St Pancras via Dover, Ramsgate and Faversham.

    • @Woodee
      @Woodee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could probably class it as "the express". Other trains only go up to London Victoria.
      Plus... the Javelin uses the High Speed line to and from St Pancras (ticket costs a bit more for the privilege!) :)

    I remember the BR sandwiches from my 'grand tour' of the network way back in the early 70-ies. But I knew I was in the UK when my fellow ferry passengers went straight for the Harwich PQ station buffet to get "chip butties", a very strange sight indeed for a Dutch 15 year old raised on bread with cheese or chocolate sprinkles ;)

      @LeoStarrenburg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I forgot to mention that we arrived at about 06:00 in the morning, the ferry was from the Dutch SMZ (Sealink did the other half) and they did serve a 'full' brekkie of sorts but it was looked upon with a mixture of pitty and loathing. Funny how some scenes are firmly set in the mind.

Some only come at certain times on certain days such as the Arriva Trains Wales services as Saturday services which are the 12:30 and 14:30 from Manchester Piccadilly to Pembroke Dock on a Class 175 or 158 for almost 8 hours. Also those pullman services font cost hundreds of pounds, I've checked the other week and more like thousands lol.

      I'm guessing that's a joke but as someone that comes from near Canterbury I just wanna say that Canterbury Cathedral was built in 1070, just 4 years after William the Conqueror became king, is a site of pilgrimage for those living in the UK and was the site of the murder of Thomas Beckett which led to King Henry II to build the large Keep and main Bailey of Dover Castle as mentioned earlier in the video, the king even hand built a chapel near the top of the Keep to honour the late Archbishop in an act of guilt for accidentally ordering his murder.

      It had a massive upgrade in the late 2000s so whilst its exterior remains largely the same, the interiors and the amount of things to do has greatly increased (in non covid times of course) and I'd definitely recommend

    A shop bearing the sign "The Original Sandwich" would seem to be both obvious and irresistible to many.

    Watching your videos makes me feel as if I should be drinking a weak lemon drink at a time of my choosing.

    Have you considered a lens skirt/lens shroud for shooting scenery from train windows? It would probably remove all of the reflections.

    There is a gate like that between Martin mill and Walmer, in the same area of Kent, along Coldblow, you just push the gate open.

    Canterbury West and Canterbury East are terribly named. They are almost exactly in line along a north-south... line. Also, getting across the track around Canterbury West is _way_ harder than it should be. Google Earth lies when it implies there is a footbridge - it's just that (admittedly impressive) signal box. The two stations are also _completely_ separate; you have to go quite some way in either direction before you can change onto a train that will reach the other station.

    Might be a place there at Sandwich to have a rememberance place for Douglas Adams as one of the caracters in the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is the sandwichmaker.
