Your story resonates...we prepare and prepare and prepare...then in the middle of the night, pitch black but for the glow of fire over the hill you get notified to evacuate. Preparation helps you but it doesn't stop the panic you feel because everything important is staring at you with round eyes waiting for you to protect them...it has always been about them. You leave with everything that has a beating heart, the rest is left behind. In that moment, their lives mean everything else is dispensable. It's just how it is. I'm so grateful for your story. I'm so very grateful you got out. And all those beating hearts depending on you for their safety, well, they got out because of you. Thank you and bravo! 🙏💕
Have you ever thought of getting a bigger horse trailer? I can't imagine three horses and a two-horse trailer glad you guys all made it out safely
This was very traumatic for her and her family and she definitely learned a lot through her experience. We are grateful that she was willing to share how she was and was not prepared so that it might help other horse owners be better prepared.

Oh Yes. We are neighbors and just moved in on March 2020 ~4 months before the Lightning complex wildfire. Needless to say we were as clueless as can be. Only luck saved us and our horses. By the time the sherif woke us to tell us we have ten minutes to leave it was too late to walk the horses to the trailer that was uphill from the barn. My 13yo son walked them down Pleasants Valley Road for 5 miles before we found shelter. I followed them in the car with our 3 dogs. By the time we put the 2 horses in a stall in a safe arena it was too late to leave the canyon - the flames went across the road and across I-80. There is no preparation for a wildfire that crosses 6 lanes of highway. GET OUT NOW is the most important takeaway, like you said. The trailer is now parked just outside the barn with the track hitched. At least twice/week dinner is served on the trailer, just like you emphasize. I know how difficult it is to rebuild, but I hope that you will rebuild soon!
