The "cabbage" experiment was actually a simple pH detecting experiment. The pH of the material the cabbage juice (in this case, candy) is dropped on determines the color change. Simple and quite cool :)
All of the food experiments were pH based, quite interesting!

The color change in the first experiment is due to a water soluble pigment called anthocyanin found in red cabbage (and some other things) that changes color when mixed with an acid or a base. That’s why when the baking soda (base) was added it turned more blue and when the lemon was added (acid) it turned pink.

These are actually super cool ways to teach kids about science. The experiment with the colour changing purple liquid is such a good demonstration of how an acidic solution vs an alkaline solution has a different effect on when added to a neutral solution and then this colour change can allow you to determine the identity of an unknown substance. Sorry my nerd is coming out, but I am doing a PhD in reproductive science.

It had a purple cabbage picture because purple cabbage is a universal reactor so when it is mixed with other things it changes colour depending on whether it is acid or alkali.

Darkest Argentum A lot of these kits we find in small stores around where we live! Kits like these have always been tough to find even for us so most aren’t even available online. BUT there are some of the more standard popin cookin kits (like the donuts and ice cream she’s done years ago) that you can find on amazon :)
