Chet Atkins was my A&R man when I was 15years old. I am now 72 & that. rendition of Sleep Walk thrilled my heart..When he signed me with RCA he changed my name from Nancy Castleberry to Nan Castle.I am still singing today. thanks
Nan Castle you have quite a voice, so good. Just listened to 'Star Light, Star Bright', Chet knew talent when he heard it, and viewed it. Glad to hear you still sing out today. Thank you for sharing this :D
And this is what a real music is about! So simple, so beautiful! I'm proud that this bad world had so great musician like Chet Atkins. Rest in Peace dude :)
Just the best. This song reminds me of my father. I love Leo's renditions of it, and have had the pleasure of his playing it upon my request at several of his performances..
I did happen to spend more than 5 minutes in the presence of Leo and It was amazing. Had front row center seat to more than one of his shows as well. Spoke with him for a few minutes as well. An absolutely Amazing individual.
What beauty! This tune takes me back to a time when I was so shy I could't ask a girl to dance. I was a late bloomer to say the least. Just watch Leo's deft touch with the slide. He only uses what he wants from the slide an no more. And Mr. Atkins completely compliments Leo with the chords. Then, they switch. What harmony! Thanks a bunch.
I think this masterpiece pretty much speaks for itself and leaves me in awe :) I thought Brian Setzer already made a great cover of the song but this one I like a little more. Atkins truely is a legend.
A beautiful, and melancholy song with Chet. It reminds me all over again that he gone from us. We have his music, but he looks so vibrant and capable here. Feels sad.
Marley was amazing - I saw him in concert and was blown out of my seat with no weed in my bloodstream. Absolute truth. Easy Skanking - the man knew what he was doing. Also, I have loved Kottke and Atkins since I first heard them. To see them play together - with little or no rehearsal as is obvious from the fact they need to 'tune' - this clip is as raw as creation of music can be. It's beautiful.
We can thank Larry Carlton, one of the very very best of the L.A. studio set for breathing fresh life into this Santo & Johnny Farina absolute classic!!! In 1982, Larry Carlton did an album called, guess what?? ""SLEEPWALK"" !!! It featured Sleepwalk, played on guitar without steel guitar/lap or pedal, only Larry, and his beautiful es-335 Gibson guitar, and a touch of Fender Strat. If you havn't yet heard Larry's album, by all means DO check it out!!!! Chet invited Larry to play on his 1983 album titled ""STAY TUNED""!!! Another fantastic album!!! In fact, in the late 1980's Chet, Larry, and Leo toured together, and I was fortunate enough to be able to see one show in N.Y.C. it was phenomenal ~!~
This is truly amazing. For Leo Kottke, who once said on one his albums, "I'd like to demonstrate one of my favorite techniques now, which is to take a lovely, simple melody and drive it into the ground" - this is something of a departure. This is taking a lovely, simple melody and making it a lovely, simple melody. Hat's off to both legendary guitarists. They tore it up on this, without tearing it apart.
@@wangdangdoodie "Sedate" is somewhat infrequent for Leo Kottke but not unheard-of. Listen to "The Ice Field," one of his own compositions, and you'll hear not only "sedate" but jazzy & bluesy as well.
Hi Kathleen, And, I agree with you! What a great tune. Makes me wish I would have danced with the girls that asked me to! But I was way too shy back then.
For a Minnesota guitar player like me, there's nothing better than this video. Legendary guitar players playing "sleepwalker" (immortalized in the movie "La Bamba") on the Legendary "A Prairie Home Companion" filmed at the Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul, MN. I may cry. We'll see.
this has got to be one of the best versions of sleepwalk ever as a beginner on acustic guitar at the ripe old age of 52 I'm gonna end up playing this if it kills and it probably will great tune played brilliantly top job guys.
That is guitar playing!!!!!!!!! Awesome in every way. Thanks for sharing such a great moment in time, Seems Chet was always near by when these great musical moments were about to be made.
All the notes which are necessary and nothing which is not. Every note in the right place. Nothing out of place. Worthless of me to describe. Ignore my comments and listen one more time to two masters creating pure emotion with technical expertise.
Fist time I've seen Chet play a resonator guitar. Beautiful sound. Mr. Kottke ain't too shabby either! The magic in Chet's fingers was just beyond imagination.
Well, I just knew The Shadows version which is rather different as it was a group with mainly lead electric guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar and drums. Great thanks ! Very beautiful ! Best wishes
this one so touched me that I broke down and am crying. It's from "my time". 76 years old-- never happened before. Thank you HuntinBoots. This filled my heart and being with love.
Two greats in an impeccable performance presented by another great - a very young Garrison Kiellor… PHC is NOT the same without his deep mellow voice and quirky humor. 🥲
OH how I agree with you. Santo and Johnny had a magical moment in time. I thought it had so many sides to it, spiritual yet romantic, just so different. But like you, this was one of the better ones Inhave heard.
When Keillor was ending the run of the show (the first time) he allowed the Dysney Channel to telecast the last three or four shows. This was one of them. How old they seemed then. How young they look now! Thanks for posting this!
Music has had soul always - you just had to find it. In 1988 these guys were drowned out by pop, but people found them anyway. Same is true today, just go to a local bluegrass or blues or folk festival. Amazing music happening.
Sam Armstrong I agree for the most part. Americans have always been good at throwing convention to the wind and just doing their own thing. I honestly think the UK has better musicians though. You wouldn't know it by listening to Radio 1 or anything though. I remember living over in England and the shit on the radio was nothing but poppy dance crap. Every now and then you'd hear Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin, otherwise it was Kylie Minogue (sp?) or some shit.
Eric Pederson it's unfortunate that the radio is so exclusive. I personally know some of the best musicians i've ever heard. top quality, high talent, humble, and hard working. guitarists, drummers, bassists, singers, etc... I agree with you tho. America's music scenes are just a bit off. too much attention given to what's gonna make money, what's gonna sell products, etc.
It seems like far too many musicians these days have a hang up about playing cover tunes. They get obsessed with being totally original, though their music is often sound-alike of so many other artists. I hope they can let go of their egos and embrace the beauty of covering classic like this. (just no Stairway To Heaven though, thanks!).
Yeah Leo missed a key on the first eight, but overall it was a rapturous rendition of this song by two of the greatest American guitarists ever put out. Leo's 12-string "gently weeps" while Chet's six just laaaays you back. Well-done.
Watching them from the side, they both have this mezmerized by their guitars. It's beautiful to watch. And at one time, Chet looked like a bit older Mark Knopfler.
2020 and YT (in spite of its infuriating censorships) drops another unknown gem into my feed. I'm a player. Even with two masters I'm holding my breath; probably projecting. Zero room for error in a performance like this...
I was a teenager when the Santo and Johnny ablum came out new. My Symphonic record player had a penny taped to the tone arm, but the swing out stereo speakers sounded great, despite the Canadian Mono copy I had to order from the Iowa music store. It was $3.99 well spent.
If only music like this was enjoyed by many and not few, then I think the world would be a better place. Love Leo and Chet. Two of the greatest ever.
It's only greed that ruins it.
This is what America should be proud of.
My life is complete, and there is a God. Although Chet was a bit before my time, Leo is fully within it. Thanks to all who made this possible!!!
And this is what a real music is about! So simple, so beautiful! I'm proud that this bad world had so great musician like Chet Atkins. Rest in Peace dude :)
bring tears to my eyes. thanks for the real music from real great musicians.
Just the best. This song reminds me of my father. I love Leo's renditions of it, and have had the pleasure of his playing it upon my request at several of his performances..
No flash. Just great musicians. The best. And such a great version. Excellent.
You can see they are both in that special place of bliss granted to few of us. Thanks for sharing!
Two master musicians in a duet ....... wotta sight to see (
and hear).
I did happen to spend more than 5 minutes in the presence of Leo and It was amazing. Had front row center seat to more than one of his shows as well. Spoke with him for a few minutes as well. An absolutely Amazing individual.

...what a great, haunting interpretation of the Santo & Johnny classic... hats off to the great Leo Kottke & the incomparable Chet Atkins!!!!
What a pairing...beautiful song...
Love it when two guys with extraordinary chops go simple and understated. Really beautiful work.
Two national treasurers on one stage. This is wonderful.
Their attitudes is why there so good you can feel it. Thanks so much.
My husband played the guitar and admired these two very much! So beautiful! Thanks for posting!
This is seriously some of the best music I've ever heard. I used think I wasn't into country or folk music. I was right. I'm into good music.
Such a beautiful version and variations with harmonies...😍
I think this masterpiece pretty much speaks for itself and leaves me in awe :)
I thought Brian Setzer already made a great cover of the song but this one I like a little more. Atkins truely is a legend.
Beautiful... Why can't I find music like this on the Icelandic radio!!!
its amazing how they are both amazing players and neither of them is walking over the other. so much going on and yet a great sound
A beautiful, and melancholy song with Chet. It reminds me all over again that he gone from us. We have his music, but he looks so vibrant and capable here. Feels sad.

Simply BEAUTIFUL ! You show me how music can possibly get any better than this !
Aint happening.
wish my generation had music like this.......... its truly magical :)

Beautiful ... What a beautiful song.... This song will take you to many places in your heart.. If you want it too...
THIS is what guitar should sound like - two of the all-time best!
I consider myself a "headbanger" but still appreciate the true roots of rock 'n' roll
This is truly amazing. For Leo Kottke, who once said on one his albums, "I'd like to demonstrate one of my favorite techniques now, which is to take a lovely, simple melody and drive it into the ground" - this is something of a departure. Very sedate for Mr Kottke!
Extremely well stated PoLytnin!
When you have all the chops in the world, and you exercise restraint...
It's a beautiful thing.
@@wangdangdoodie "Sedate" is somewhat infrequent for Leo Kottke but not unheard-of. Listen to "The Ice Field," one of his own compositions, and you'll hear not only "sedate" but jazzy & bluesy as well.
Beautiful. Incredible.

Two masters at work!

One of the greatest performers....I got to see him in concert several years ago in Dallas and it was wonderful!
This is just one of the best things I have ever seen and heard
Two of the best guitarists on the planet, beautiful
History in the making.... so beautiful, and besides all the stories behind the song of Santo & Johnny7
Freaking beautiful. Love Kottke and Chet is another plus. So good.
Un grand moment de guitare avec des monuments de la guitare
No words can describe this performance..too beautiful
Thank you You are one person who realizes who Garrison d how pleasant he is. (and funny).
Sweet duet on such a great old instrumental. Classic. Love the harmony on the melody line.
Leo is amazing. Chet left us too soon, Les also. But with gems like this we'll have you always.
All the notes which are necessary and nothing which is not. Every note in the right place. Nothing out of place. Worthless of me to describe. Ignore my comments and listen one more time to two masters creating pure emotion with technical expertise.
Would've loved being there to hear them live. And I'm amazed that with 933,413 views, not one person has commented. How can this be?
Fist time I've seen Chet play a resonator guitar. Beautiful sound. Mr. Kottke ain't too shabby either! The magic in Chet's fingers was just beyond imagination.

Santo and Johnny would totally approve of this lovely rendition of their song
it's amazing to see the greats. I bet they made up that arrangement in 20 mins . THAT'S how good they are!
The original is one of my favorites and this one is much enjoyed by me too !
Thanks for sharing !
creative arrangement of a classic with top-shelf performance, of course
SOOOOOOOO very good. Wow! A great interpretation of this song.
Powerful playing by two of the greatest pickers in the world.....just awesome!!!!
That was unbelievably beautiful.
I love to hear musicians who enjoy playing their music ^^
It's hard to find a good version of this song despite so many covers. This one is just great!
Two greats in an impeccable performance presented by another great - a very young Garrison Kiellor… PHC is NOT the same without his deep mellow voice and quirky humor. 🥲
Magnifique !.... Merci !

WOW!!! From my "home town" of St. Paul, Minneapolis. I played that stage in 2000. BIG!!!
Just great n fine memories.🤠Thanks
iN MY MAUDLIN MOOD...THIS TUGGED AT MY HEART STRINGS SO! TFS! XO
@Leo Kottke Hi! Thank you...it is nice to meet you too!
Thank the spirits for the Tube. Only a couple of hundred people got to see and hear this performance in person.
john clarke -
Finally someone who says something nice about Garrison. I enjoy his show so much. But apparently this is the last year.

Back in the day when America had talented people...
I'd rephrase and say "back in the day when "talented" people had actual talent, and not just some corporate popularity

Superbe version ! ma préférée !!!
such a nice version ,great post !!!
One of my favorite songs done great!
i dont care what you guys argue about ...that was sublime
An unbelievable performance by both of these legends.
Chet Atkins looks so happy to playing with a VERY talented fan .
Chet Atkins is a great guitarist!! I remember hearing his music when I was really little (about 5 or 6 years old).
Yes I heartily agree with you! This world could be a better place!
Watching them from the side, they both have this mezmerized by their guitars. It's beautiful to watch. And at one time, Chet looked like a bit older Mark Knopfler.
might be one of the most beautiful guitar duos of all times! I'm just sayin!
Leo has been at the Woodstock Opera House in IL several times where I
have enjoyed him.
2020 and YT (in spite of its infuriating censorships) drops another unknown gem into my feed.

I am absolutey a huge fan of Leo & Chet but no one can put the Magic in this song but Santo & Johnny.
+St Pauli - truth..!
strange but true......
I have to agree. Actually this song does not challenge either guitar player.
Check out Jim Mesi's version.

Short and sweet!!! Drifting away now.
Doesn't get any better than this..........Chet makes his playing sound like slide without the bottleneck! Great.
Beautiful!
This is sooooo good..
Beautiful.
Orgasmic. These two are amazing, and this is a beautiful song.
I hear you Calling40, I hate getting old!! It's sad for me also!
thanks for sharing
