I love antique recordings! I'm 69 and I carefully preserve and occasionally play several 78's passed down from my great-grandparents, including Billy Murray's music hall song, "Always Leave 'Em Laughing"

This is an entertaining video for me since I love old records and their history!

Ben Pollack was an actual leader who, in fact played at the Park Central Hotel in NYC at the time of that recording. It wouldn't surprise me if Goodman was with Pollacks band at this time, since he and plenty of others that were the top dogs of the late 30s into the 40s were in his band in the 20s; but make no mistake this is a completely different person here. Great video overall!

Victor Talking Machine Company was formed in 1901. In 1902 the 7" and the 10" introduced in 1900 were labelled Victor. Monarch was used around 1903 - 1904 for the 10" and Deluxe for the 12" introduced in 1903. Victor was relegated to the 7". Then around 1905 all sizes were labelled Victor.

Very interesting set of records. I, too, am always looking out for unusual early ones, so I think you made a great buy there! 😀👍

RE Vernon Dalhart's tribute to Charles Lindbergh: Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic took place on May 20 and 21, 1927, so the record would have to be later than that. "Viva-Tonal" was Columbia's name for electrical recording. Dalhart was the first country singer to have a million-selling record: "Wreck of the Old 97," originally recorded for Edison in 1920 and re-recorded for Victor in 1924 (it was the Victor version that was the million-seller).

The first disc you showed has price of sixty cents. In 1907 a dollar was worth $33.56. And they talk about record prices being too high today.

When I simply compare with the usual price for a 45 rpm in the 1970's and 1980's, the 1 $ for a MP3 download isn't really expensive.

I made a video about Victor's a while ago and I was using photos from on Discogs in that video since I don't live in the US, so it's really cool seeing how these records ACTUALLY look.
I had NO idea Zonophone existed in the US until now too. I should really look into that at some point.

I know we are advised not to touch the surface of vinyl records (the oils from our hands degrade the groove surface), but I'm not sure about shellac....

How was the lot listed on ebay? Was the Monarch pictured in the listing? I once bid on a lot of one dozen one hole Harmony records without knowing what was on them and they all turned out to be good. I have Zonophones and other ancient things coming out of my ears. Are you in California?

Do you own a vintage record player with a cartridge that uses steel needles to play all the acoustic records properly? And maybe a record player optimized for 90 micrometer instead 65 as it was standard after 1949?

I have a chess record 78 by Mckinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters) I want to be loved on one side and My eyes keep me in trouble on the other side. I love that record. I even have wooden needles which makes it sound better and isn't so hard on the record. Also Eddie Boyd... I'm a prisoner. I love old Blues !

how do you clean these records? I found a box about 10 years ago at a garage sale for 5 bucks... most even have the wax sleeve... I recognized the RCA batwing label; there were about 4 of those in there. Some Columbias like the Lindy one of yours... a mgm Hank Williams (not any hits I am aware of)... Capitols etc. Those real old one sided ones you got are pretty amazing. Cheers!

@GeeAitch-r1r Stick around, and I might put up a video about how I clean mine in the future. Typically, I use light soap and some water. It works well on most 78's, but NOT with Edison Diamond Discs.
