His jokes, while biting, weren’t unfair, and his comment at the end is a reminder of what they’re supposed to do. Bravo.
Not unfair at all. In fact, rather gentle. It went straight to the heart of their issues, but manages to do so without sounding mean. Always framing it as some kind of "appreciation". Even if it's appreciating their absurdity.
It has always been the role of the media to monitor, check, and report on those exercising governmental power. But who keeps a check on the media? That role, for better or worse, appears to have fallen on comedians.

Trevor is a master! Started by being complimentary, respectful, intentionally disarming the room. Then with a slow crescendo took it to cringe level uncomfortable tension with savage and brilliant well-deserved roasts. He tells the truth if you listen to him he’s amazing and telling it like it is. We all need to listen and understand. America first.
I dont think he's the greatest comedian. But he is really good at doing the "mindblown conscience of an average human, confronting modern reality" thing, which Jon Stewart pioneered (albeit strongly inspired and anticipated by George Carlin). He can dissect a news story, an individual or an institution, while making fun of every detail through some joke or digression, thus giving the viewer a broader understanding of the topic while also leading them towards a "payoff" (like the one he used at the end, here).
Of course, he has great writers too.

I have always believed that Trevor noah is a true comedic genius from his humble beginning in South Africa. The things that impressed me the most is how he has studied American politics, culture and the who is who in his profession in such a short time. Not forgetting how young and mature he is. this was one of the best performances by a host that I have witnessed, and I have watched most of these. Trevor Noah crushed it out of the park, and zinged everybody across the board with equal glee. Biden took some major needling, and did it with good grace. this is the firs time in a long tome that I have laughed about politics (in a good way).

The fact that Trevor Noah & John Oliver were born in different countries gives them an insight into what we Americans do, on a daily basis, which is absolutely hysterical to sublimely ridiculous. I love hearing them dissect our norms & comparing them to theirs. It's a comic's way of giving us a glimpse into how the world views us.
Love that. I remembered when Stewart recommended him the years have flown by. He was especially funny in SA in how he could have a go at everyone I guess it took some time to "learn the crowd" in US so to speak. This was more like SA humour.

100% agree. hadn't heard of him before he became host of the Daily Show and wondered wtf a south african would bring to the table. It quickly became clear that he is PERFECT for the job. And what he has done with the Daily Show is outstanding. It goes in on issues that people who are NOT WHITE face. And I suspect that's why a lot of people dont' like his show... they aren't at the centre like they are in every other show.
