- This video we want to show you life in a typical Chinese family as we cook and enjoy a lovely evening together.
We are currently living with a beautiful family in Beijing, China and we want to share typical family life and their traditions. In this vlog we will be cooking together at home, and discussing the unique family dynamic here in China (it is VERY different to ours!).
Our family live in the suburbs of Beijing, in a area called Wangjing. This is how normal people in China really live.

Life in a TYPICAL Chinese family (How people here REALLY live)
What it's Like to Live with a Chinese family in Beijing, China 🇨🇳
How does the family dynamic in China compare to where you are from? 🤔❤️
hola desde ecuador
They are so kind and welcoming. God bless you, beautiful souls.
Such a beautiful family, we feel honoured to have been welcomed on so much 🥰❤️
Hi love from India
Say something
Wow, you two are the first couple who not just travel, but also do the life exploration.
More amazing is you guys have the guts "just do it".
I really liked this video! The two of you really thrive in situations like this where you are integrating with a family or community. Your warmth and openness shines through. ❤
Thank you so much 🥰❤️
To connect and bond to a family when you are away.. That is precious. What a lovely family you are with. It's genuine. We love you guys. ❤ Be Well ! Stay Healthy from Harriet, Jim and Yuki
Thank you so much guys! Sending you both lots of love ❤️❤️❤️
What a beautiful video of a special occasion in a Chinese family. The food looked delicious… 😋.. and such lovely people. Thoroughly enjoyed this experience with you. 😊😊 PS the language classes are really teaching you a lot!
Thank you so much Miriam, really appreciate it 🥰❤️
I would love to experience all the wonderful cultures of this world but thankfully I can experience it through your beautiful vloggs .. Thank you guys ❤❤❤
What a wonderful experience! You guys seem to be doing so well with your Chinese. I’m impressed!!!
Thank you so much Linda 🥰❤️❤️❤️
Wow! You guys get to spend such an amazing time with this local family. ❤
"This is my favorite beer" has to be the most useful phrase to learn. Smiling! But exactly: learn phrases! Of course, yes/no, left/right, push/pull/, exit/entry, etc. The numbers from 1 to 10; who, what, when, where, what time/day, etc. are good to know. How much? is very important (smiling). I like/love (or don't like/allergic to!), There's more, but my teaching and learning philosophy is COMMUNICATION. Hang the grammar. Use gestures, too. What a cool language/linguistic experience. Rock on Matt and Julia! Thanks for another delightful visit with your Chinese host family!
Thank you so much Linda, really appreciate it ❤️🥰
This has been a very enjoyable and informative video to watch. Your stay with your friendly host family is pleasant because you, Matt and Julia, are also very affable and authentic in your approach to others. So thank you for this video. ❤️🙋♀️
Hi, I live in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.I'm 75 years old and I just saw you Julia and Matt on the Great British Bake show, It's on Netflix. You were so young. Thank you for taking us on your travels. You showed me and others that people no matter where they live are basically warm hearted and wonderful.
My favourite episode so far. It has a lot of warmth and depth. I wished I could have squeezed myself in at the end of the table and joined you. A bit difficult, though given that I'm vegetarian! I admire your courage in enrolling in a language school to learn Chinese and grow in understanding of Chinese culture, something language apps can never do. I love your travel vlogs, you are in a class of your own.
Looking forward to the next one.
💐💐♥♥♥
They're doing so well!
You 'FAMILY IN CHINA 'and both of you are enjoying the new environment learning how to do the Jiaozi and the way Chinese family go about their daily life is such and experience.
👍👍👍
Once in a lifetime kind of stuff
Chinese people attach great importance to family and children, and to their education. People in the north are more enthusiastic, with cheap prices and convenient transportation. They have heating in winter and the temperature is about 25 degrees indoors, so life is pretty good. If you live in Europe for a long time, it's a bit boring. Living in Asia for a while occasionally is a new experience.
We’ve had an incredible experience this far 🥰❤️
Seeing you both learn to play the amazing instruments is amazing. I def can see you are both having an amazing time. Looks to be like a lap harp but much different set up. I'd love to learn this amazing instrument. I find their music is very relaxing and calming. I love the family you both are staying with. Very sweet and willing to help you both learn their culture along with the language while you are there. I love your host family. Btw you both are doing amazing with learning Chinese. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us. I am loving your travels in China.
They really are doing brilliantly so far!
Looks like a wonderful experience. What an amazing life you two are living!
imagine trusting this kind of content but never exploring books like Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki, no wonder people stay in the same cycles
In a Chinese home guests are always encouraged to eat more and more - 你吃吧!你吃多一点吧 You eating more makes grandma happy!
Haha, we will oblige to their request 😀❤️
Lovely music.
Thank you 🥰❤️
It' s really fascinating how you fit into this family. Shared! ❤
Love the Asian culture ❤❤
Very busy household. I didn't know what that instrument was so I looked it up because it sounds so beautiful. It looks like a guzheng but it didn't sound like that when Amanda was saying it. The food looks delicious, you are fortunate to have a professional chef in the house.
yes it is a guzheng.
Amanda's feeling is wrong, what you think is right, Guzheng also has many different specifications, this is just one of them, and similar to the guzheng is the ancient Chinese qin, the appearance is similar to the guzheng, but the timbre is not as rich as the guzheng, the history of ancient Chinese qin is nearly 1000 years earlier than the guzheng. There is a very interesting phenomenon that many Musical Instruments named after a single word are native to China, such as:琴、筝、笛、萧、埙、笙。
There are also instruments such as pipa, erhu and suona, which were mainly introduced to China from ancient Persia. The interesting thing is that these foreign instruments are better developed in China, while Iran is almost lost, which is a pity.😂😂😂
@@nuo.not1033 Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this. I really love the sound of the instrument.
@@nuo.not1033I'm pretty sure they were playing Guzheng. Guqin generally is smaller and have fewer strings.
This is a great series ❤
So glad you are enjoying it 🙏🏼❤️
thank you very much for sharing this.
Matt and Julia just get it! Keep it up guys, you're doing great, but we want to see more 😎 😇
I felt privileged to get a glimpse of ur daily life. The genuine human connection and exchange. So precious. Thanks for sharing. 🙏👍🤗
Great video! So cool to watch you guys learn a new language!
Thanks 💕
thank you! Matt and Julia!! so happy to see your video! Making dumpling, joining family dinner... what is a family feeling!
That front door though...WOW!
English: Your host family seems so friendly. They speak Chinese to you. As much as you can understand and taught new words. My host in Taiwan did that but not as much. Since they knew English well. I live in a different floor in the apartment than them. I had a different experience than you.
at the end of the video, when you two are giving an assessment, at the background, the leaves are very colorful!
They were so gorgeous! Love autumn colours so much 🍂 ❤️
The important thing in an Asian society, when young children connect with grandparents, they learn the Chinese value system and cultural traditions when they grow up. These may be lacking in the upbringing of any children who are left to nannies etc. to be looked after in some parts of the world. Most Chinese are therefore , very attached to their grandparents in this sense. They remain filial, respectful and loving to their grandparents as part of the value system.
How very beautiful, I love listening to traditional Chinese music ❤
You guys are amazing
your videos are so underrated guys! I thoroughly enjoy watching ☺
I enjoyed watching your vlog🥰
There is no better way to improve your Chinese than to live with a Chinese family. You guys are doing it right! 💪
This ☝🏼
Chinese,Russian,English. we are all one. Respect to all. Thanks.
That was fun! I learn so much from you guys. Thanks!
Heartwarming ❤
TY 🫶
Iwonder if Julia is German... Thank you for the vlog of life in China.
I was very available for my grandson, but here in Australia a lot of grandparents feel that it’s an imposition to have to babysit. It’s a new perspective. Love watching your integration into the family and listening to you using their language. Thank you. 💖🇦🇺🌻🐝
Regardless of nation, human beings are all capable of love, compassion, loyalty, generosity, and integrity.
We who put borders between nations and form our own cognitive biases against other nations that our governments' deem as "enemies" are really not so different at all. Such experiences like this show that really humans the world over are all the same deep down. Videos like this are a good lesson to people that differences shouldn't need to matter!
It is very common for Asian countries to have such close-knit family values / ties, esp. those with Sinocentric influence (China, Korea, Japan,Vietnam, Singapore [majority Chinese], etc.).
Lovely music, lovely language, beautiful people!! I wish our governments would just sort it out!!!
I love Chinese culture and all the food looks amazing.
What a fascinating glimpse into Chinese culture, I really enjoyed that, how beautiful to see the family dynamics. I think Western families could learn a lot from this! Thank you for the video, more pls! Love from Australia 🇦🇺
Hi guys ! It is great to see you do so well in that kind family. I think China is a fascinating country. Are you doing any cooking for them or for yourselves ? I think it is wonderful to learn about other cultures. As I cannot travel anymore due to mobility issues I am so grateful for your videos. Especially now when I am recovering from a hip replacement . That food looks good ! Enjoy. Love from California ❤❤❤❤
Omg. Don't know how i missed that you were on the great British baking show. I just started watching the episodes on Netflix from the beginning, and I was like, "i know that face!" Giggle 🤭
I need to be taken in my a Chinese family. 😊
Us too haha ❤️🥰
Love this video guys. love food and nothing bound by race and region.. Love cooking and that always makes people happy.
They walk so fast lolllll no wonder they are all petite. That musical harp thingy reminds of the tune for the British shipping forecast title tune . . i will see if i can find the name of it. . brb. It's called " sailing by"
Chinese people seem very friendly. Wonderful to do this when young as you are. Are you planning on settling down in China?
I had tripe prepared by my Mexican brother-in-law (my sister's husband). It tasted like beef and was quite tasty. Had someone not told me it was tripe, I would never have guessed.
Such a lovely family to spend your time with…❤xxx
the music lessons were 😍😍
I had to laugh that Matt called the dish stomach, tripe was a staple in Britain in the mid 20th Century. My Dad loved tripe and onions and potato in a white sauce. You can see the love this family puts into cooking. As a side note, that music touches the heart, the nearest thing I can think of is a Harp. I love Chinese music!
So interesting. How long does the baby live with the grandparents? Often in Africa where I grew up the African children go and live in the rural areas with the grandparents while the mothers go to work in the cities. Your language skills are impressive after such a short time. Looking forward to the next instalment. ❤❤
She will stay with the grandparents for a few weeks at a time 😘 Thank you so much 🥰❤️
Sometimes young parents live with one side of grandparents and switch from time to time to make things easier before the kid goes to kindergarten.
These will be easy for you Julia, like the ones your Nan makes
When you played the zither, it reminds me of when I bought a violin, thinking it was easy, turns out it is a very difficult instrument.
How do you find the air in Beijing? Are people concerned about air pollution?
Wish you a wonderful time getting to know the Chinese way of life ❣️
Did you take fruit to your host when you visit? This was custom in our area when we were there? The Guzheng is such a beautiful instrument!
I just imagined a melody for that chinese instrument but with a harmonica and that typical decent horse rythm i sounds like in a way a chinese wild west song 🤣🤣🤣
This reminds me of learning German culture. A typical German would say their country is really mundane, nothing exciting about e.g. "that typical German architecture" (since it's everywhere) so they'd rather backpack abroad so to see something "new". Watching the lady playing the music instrument, reminds me of that.
what's the name of Amanda's music teacher again please?
Another great video by the way 😊
Amazing experience for you both. Lovely family. You will have to make Piroshki for them. Xx
In chinese family of course the grandparents would want to be with grandchildren 😊
😀😀😀
Beautiful 👶baby
Incredible x 48. Amazing x 23. Brilliant x 12!! You two need to invest in a Thesaurus.
😍🥰
this is good, but if you haven’t read Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki, you’re only seeing part of the picture
I've 'helped' make jiaozi a few times. I also struggle folding them, so I'm not really much help. Either I put too much filling and can't close them properly, or I put too little filling and the dumplings just look... wimpy. :P
Beautiful family....Did the meat taste authentic?
Olá, falo do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, que anfitriões maravilhosos! Estou me organizando para visitar Beijim. Como fazer contato com estes anfitriões maravilhosos.Viajarei sozinha, tenho 70 anos. Um grande abraço. ❤❤❤❤
is matt left handed?
Do you have to learn to read in Mandarin, or is it just the spoken word you're learning ?
We are mainly learning spoken Chinese first and foremost, and to read using ‘Pingyin’ (Chinese written in Latin letters), but we are starting to learn some of the main characters as the weeks progress ❤️🥰
Is there a party in preparation? So much food, it seems. Or is it make a lot, "freeze some" for later?
We ate the lot 😅 there were quite a few of us to be fair 😏❤️
@@MattandJulia Nice. I do recall you are both always hungry! Cheers.
I can’t even imagine gathering the courage to try and learn Mandarin. 😅
Why? It’s such a beautiful language!! And it’s not as very difficult as you might imagine. English grammar is a lot more complicated.
It’s been years since I learned some…. I should try again!
@@kathleenfurey5882 Well said! Anyone can do it! It's not as hard as so many people think :)
You r so beautiful ❤
Just wondering the differences between Chinese dumplings and Russian-s.
馅料不同
funny how people spend so much time on this stuff but ignore books like Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki that actually explain what’s going on
Welcome to India but careful
❤😂🎉❤😂🎉
要被归化了,哈哈哈,欢迎
crazy how much people rely on surface-level ideas when Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki exists, but I guess not everyone is ready for deeper truths
китайские гусли? 😁
Дааа ❤️
How could you not have met the baby after staying there for a month? 🤔
can’t believe this is what people focus on instead of reading something like Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki, maybe that’s why so little ever changes
It takes a village to raise a child.
if this resonates with you, you owe it to yourself to read Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki, but maybe it’s not for everyone
not saying this isn’t interesting, but books like Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki make this look like child’s play
It seems like you two go back to the same countrys over and over? Why always communist countries?
I wished you were there two years ago this time in November, so you could witness the Anti Lockdown A4 Revolution.
It was closed at the point 🙂↔️
Couldn't watch this, to cringy 👎🏻
smells like propaganda
Dude, get a life…
Do you have a CCP handler ?
😂😂😂 If only, we’d be rich! 🤑 Here’s a crazy thought, maybe we just chose to travel to China! 🫣
@@MattandJulia Please get me one for myself, it will make my trip there easier next year! haha
Will do! 😀❤️
Here come the 50 cent accusing crowd, it has becoming sick and tired kind of thing of these McDonald eating, sport watching keyboard worriers, they don't even know how sad their life is😢😢😢 so counter intuitive now even any Westerner ( suppoingly free vs oppressed Chinese like that family ) in China became propagandists for Chinese government!
Let set up go fund me name CPC propaganda funds and pay every single Westerner in China to make it a reality 😂😂😂
Do u mind me asking you this?
Do you feel slight guilt when your democract leaders using your taxes to trigger civil war and kill / loot so many lives?
Do you feel great for your future generations?
Please tell me since you throw that qns at them.
this is good, but if you haven’t read Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki, you’re only seeing part of the picture
