Being chased or even just encountering an aggressive dog when you are a kid is traumatic for sure. To want to be able to overcome that fear for herself and her daughter must have been so difficult. Good job Nancy!

I got bit by two dogs, once when I was a small kid and one where I was a bigger kid, still a kid though, like elementary. I have a scar on my right elbow and lip now. I still love dogs, it ‘s still scary and whenever medium sized to large dogs come around and especially when I’m walking around and a dog is barking through the fence I get so terrified every time and they won’t even have to be barking either just looking at me and I’ll cross the street or go into the street to avoid the sidewalk. But I live in apartment for animals now and so I see lots of big dogs around so I think I’m getting better, there’s this old man who I see often walking his medium-to-large dog and I pet it even when I was getting scared and now after four encounters I’m not scared of that dog. So I think this is kinda like my exposure therapy.

I got chased and bitten by a dog on my knees when I was a small child so I’m very afraid of dogs too. Nowadays, when I see a dog walking with its owner on the sidewalk I switch sides and walk on the edge close to the bike lane. For me it is hard to get over that fear and trauma because I’m not exposed to dogs on a daily basis so that fear is still instilled in me.

My mom wasn’t a fan of dogs either, even though I kept asking as a kid. Then my freshman year of High School one of our neighbors had Chihuahua puppies and my mom went over and picked one. A week later she surprised me with the puppy, and said he was my responsibility. Then a month or two later that puppy followed my Mom around 24/7 lol. He LOVED my mom and he was also the reason my Mom started her regular walks. She become a dog Mom and spoiled her dog like crazy. They both passed away since but I like to think that he is still following my Mom everywhere she is in Heaven. 🫶

Me too. Actually adult experiences for me. I’ve had friends who had Rottweilers. I was able to read that the dogs hated me but the friends were oblivious to the dogs language and pushed both me and the dogs to interact.
I can tell when a dog is friendly or aggressive by their tail and posture.
But anyway I would be very frightened to be around another oblivious human with their aggressivedog breed.
I have had my own large dog and I would never push him to interact with someone he didn’t want to and vice/versa.
I also would explain his body and facial language to visitors when they were afraid of him since he would “smile” and turn his head side to side making play biting gestures while bending down his front legs with his waging butt and tail straight up , pleading with the Visitors to play with him. I respected that it scared them and didn’t push them, just explained and demonstrated that I would protect them by inserting myself or leashing the dog and talking gently to him to calm down.

Love this story. My neighbour's children were also afraid of dogs. But, they used to walk by my fence and talk to my two dogs. Soon, it was a hand up against the chain link, then fingers through it, then hands over the fence. My dogs were so sweet and loving that in short time, the kids were asking to come in to the yard to pet them. It all didn't really take that long, and then they were so happy to get their own dog. Puppy love, there's almost nothing like it 😍🐕
