One Pro Tip from a fellow nomad / backpacker / wanderer - switch to merino wool socks. Darn Tuff or Smart Wool are both great options. Merino Wool socks can be worn for multiple days in a row without accumulating bad smells, and the also dry incredibly quickly. This comes from someone who generally sweats a lot and walks a lot on the weekends. You could genuinely travel with half as many socks, and be totally ok for the long haul. 🧦
Looks like it's becoming real now - not long to go to the big adventure. Thanks for letting us join you on the way - I've a feeling it'll be an amazing journey. :)
This is MEGA useful, that you so much for this video. I am leaving to travel around the wrld for 2 years in 3 weeks and watching your video I realised there are few extra bits that didn't even cross my mind yet they seem super helpful to have on you as a photographer... Good luck to all the travellers out there stay safe!
What an adventure to be embarking on! Seeing the heights your creative journey is taking you on is so inspiring to me. Best of luck and can't wait to see what you create out in Istanbul!
Hey Roman if you ever want to come to USA and shoot storm photos in tornado alley, I’m from Oklahoma and I have a friend who is a meteorology professor/weatherman/storm chaser in the OKC area. The images I’ve seen from some of my friends out in the field have been absolute bangers as you say in the UK.
So good to have across this video, as we're planing same/similar trip too. We spent 7 months on the road '19-'20, but had to come back to UK cause of the C. It was interesting to see what other backpackers take and had to make a few notes (ie the water bag). Enjoy your trip!
Great setup. Have a wonderful trip Roman. Stating the obvious, but if you have to check in any bags, keep the valuables, laptops, tablets and camera equipment in the carry on. Looking forward to your videos.
I shoot and have always shot almost exclusively with Nikon and Canon - and as of recently with Hasselblad. In other words; BIG cameras, BIG lenses... I can not imagine myself not bringing either my large case or my 70 liter backpack just for camera and other tech gear only! I do however rarely go out to shoot street, I mostly just shoot for work, which are events, weddings and portraiture. Outside of work though, other than going hiking with my 70L camera bag and a 15L hiking bag, I don't go shooting out much. My most recent adventure was 3 weeks ago - a 6 hour drive to Austrian Alps for a 2 day sleepover in a tent... Oh and here's a tip; it will help you pack more clothes into your backpack. My father taught me this and apparently it's called an ''Army Roll;'' For example, for a shirt, you basically just fold your shirts sleeves in, then fold it in 3 times (like they do with clothes in stores) and then literally just roll it up. You can also look up some videos on TH-cam, which will also be useful when or if you forget how to do it - happened to me. :D
Amazing can’t wait to see your shoots from all around the world I know this fear of missing I can’t tell you’re gonna have much less thing in about 6 month Good luck
Yeah I too think this will reduce considerably. However saying that I have been trying to get this kit down for a while and this is the smallest I could get away with. Cheers
I'm only 3 min in but I'd take a traditional carry on so you can rest your heavy camera bag on top and pull them together. Also you may have to check it in so the contents won't be ruined being tossed around by bag handlers. Sure it's a pain to drag it but it will save your back as you may have to carry it while getting to your destination.
I tried the roller and do have a good 50cm one with the last few items I own at my parents house but I just don't get on with them. I always find them a pain to drag around. However I will see how my back deals with this load. If no good then next time I am home, I will swap over
Darn Tuff socks a must...get them you won't regret it...also put something on your completely black bag so you can quickly identify it... be it a bandana or patch something so it stands out to you.
Meanwhile, Lukasz Palka of Eyexplore went shooting for years with a Nikon D4, with a hand grip, but mellowed with age and took on a Z6...with a hand grip, to shoot around Tokyo. Of course, he's not travelling in the same way(and has a RicohGRiiix in his back pocket), but I love the way street photography can be so diverse in how you approach it, what limits your circumstances and personal preferences place on it etc.
Nice one, Roman. Godspeed on your travels. As someone who has travelled extensively and lived out of a bag for longer periods of time, I can recommend packing merino whool t-shirts. You can wear them for longer than cotton ones before they start to smell, and they are actually cooler to the skin in hot climates. Also, bring a small power extension chord, in case you want to work in say a hotel lobby and the lead is too far away. And also, try to take a few low-tech days. Sometimes aimlessly wandering around a place, without the distractions of a phone, camera and all is what you need to truly take in your surroundings. 😉
@@snapsbyfox something to consider. When I travelled around Myanmar I printed some business cards with a link to a google drive and a text in English and Burmese explaining how people can download the photo I took of them. It helps break down the language barrier and I felt it was a polite way of giving back a little. Made it easier to approach people asking if I can take their photo and eased tension after taking ‘illicit’ pictures say at a market or temple. Usually people turned out to be very grateful for having a nice pic of themselves.
I always lived by the mantra that it's better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it. so I always packed for every eventuality and invariably took too much stuff.

Ah mate! Super jealous of your upcoming adventures, have a wonderful time though and just absorb it all in and get stuck into the cultures. Eat where the locals eat, find local photographers through Instagram as they will really give you that insider knowledge for sure! Possibly overpacked a little bit. Camera wise my travel kit is the 18-55/55-200 and the 23/50 f2. I know you need to make videos as you go though. I know you said you didn’t get on with lavs but the Rode GO 2 kit is very good. You can clip the mic on the brim of a hat or wear it as a neckless? Socks and underwear, maybe 5 of each or less? Just wash in the shower each day and hang to dry overnight? Happy to help with any travel tips, travelled overseas to 40+ countries personally and was also in the military where they teach you to live of the absolute minimum’s. I am sure you have done lots of research though.
