  • In this video, I react for the first time to The Hu performing "Wolf Totem". In this video, I analyse their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.
I am delighted that I finally got to react to this song! Such a cool blend of rock and Mongolian music!

These guys are graduates of the Mongolian Music Conservatory with degrees in Classical Music. They're fabulous musicians. Their albums are a combination of traditional Mongolian influences and modern rock. They are terrific "live" performers. Thanks for the reaction.

👉The Hu: This band was founded in 2016. The syllable Hu in the band name is the Mongolian root for the word human. The band name roughly translates as 'the people'. The band's logo shows a snow leopard. The band chose this animal because of its mythical significance. Among other things, it is said to be a symbolic animal for ancient Mongolian tribes.
The four members of the band, Gala (Singer), Jaya (Singer), Enkush (Mongolian horse head violin, Undertone singing) and Temka (Mongolian Gitarre), all have degrees in music from the Mongolian State Conservatory. Jaya teaches there under his real name G. Nyamjantsan. The HU have modified and strengthened their instruments, which were mostly played sitting down.
The Hu call their style of music Hunnu Rock. They use traditional Mongolian musical instruments such as the horse head violin, the Mongolian guitar and also employ traditional Mongolian undertone singing. The HU have modified and strengthened their instruments, which were mostly played sitting down. From the field of heavy metal they mainly borrow the hammering basses for their music. (www)

These guys are awesome live, saw them open for Halestorm.
They call their sound, 'Hunnu rock'. 'Hu' is inspired by the ancient Mongol/Turkic Hunnu empire
4 members and 4 touring members.
Gala and Enkush on Morin Khuur and throat singing.
Jaya - throat singing, Tumuur Hhuur (jaw harp), Tsuur(end blown flute)
    Temka- Tovshuur.
    Touring members:
    Ono- percussion
    Jamba -guitar
    Davaa- bass
    Odko- drums.
This song was one of several that were redone with new English lyrics and guest singers. This one with Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach).
Also try Song of Women with Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), and Yuve Yuve Yu, either original or with Danny Case (From Ashes to New)

The Hu are so amazing live! like 8 people on stage and 7 of them throat singing and all of them playing different instruments... And the best is that even if you can't understand a word, you can always shout "Hu! HU!..." in almost every song because of the steady base rythm. It feels so good when the whole audience rides on that primal atmosphere

I recently discovered my false folds, thanks in part to you, and find I have an upper and lower area, the lower produces no discomfort or tension. I've used false folds like a throat clearing to growl the sax for years. I've tried moving it down. It changes the sound but also makes it much easier., with no tension.
I think my voice teacher is back at our learning center tomorrow. I'll have ro talk with him about this during our lesson. I mentioned it to him before he left and he's excited to talk about it. His wife just had their first child, so he has been out for a week.

    Hallo, nice to discover you.
My previous favorite singer and probably the best I heard in the past 50 years of listening to music is:
The lead singer Floor Jansen from Nightwish. Floor is from the Netherlands and the band with the most brilliant composer coming from Finland.
They music is Symphonic Metal (using backtracks of the London Philharmonic Orchestra) with influences of Keltisch and Folkisch sounds and instruments, like Flute and Backpipe. All that played by their multi instrument player Troy Donockley of England.
I discovered Floor and Nightwish recently and as an old guy, I'm instantly became a great fan.
I hope you gone watch them, and I'm hoping to see a reaction of you.
You have a very nice kind of technical /humoristic reactioning (is that English? 😅)
Greetings from the Netherlands, Geert de Lange

Don't be too hard on yourself Lolli. If someone tarred you with the infectious brush there's not much you can do about it.
I heard another song and this time it's one you might like instead of being one that I like. It's Agseisa singing 'When I look At You' and I think she is singing it live. She sings normally sometimes and sings like she has a bit of laryngitis sometimes and sings like she has three different kinds of the croaky/raspy throat sound the rest of the time. And they are all mixed up one after the other. It's all kind of perplexing for me but I think you will love it !

This is just a note on the lyrics: they use rank names from Mongolian wrestling (like wolf, snake, tiger, elephant) to underline/make clear what they are willing to do, whether it be threats against their roots/history or even actual actions. I don't know the ranking system but it seems that a blue maned lion is stronger than a tiger. Just look at Japanese sumo, they also have rank names like: maegashira, komusubi, sekiwake, ozeki and yokozuna. These are the highest ranks in sumo, ascending.
And sorry, English is not my mother tongue ^^. Greetings from Dresden / Germany

Thank you once again for more wonderful insights into the intricacies of this song, but wait, there's more. My favourite of theirs at the moment is the live play-through of 'Sugaan Essena' from the Star Wars, Jedi: Fallen Order video game that is sung in Huttese (as in Jabba, The Hutt), a language they worked out with the producers specifically for the game.
The Mongolian version is called "Black Thunder', but I play 'Sugaan Essena' on loop for hours at a time at work. It's amazing for giving you the energy to GSD. Their version of 'Yuve Yuve Yu' with (or without) From Ashes To New is also great, as is 'Woman Song', with (or without) Lizzy Hale - both different styles to 'Wolf Totem'.
Finally, I'd like to second Tom Hemmer's recommendation for Japanese Folk Rock / Pop / Metal / Jazz / Punk / band Wagakki Band, who are some of Japan's best musicians combined into a band using traditional Japanese instruments and singing / poetry styles, along with modern rock instruments (and assorted traditional dances from Yuko - lead vocals, keyboards and band leader - including sword, fan and parasol).
Tom's recommendation of 'Kyoukasuigetsu' + 'Tsukini sakebuyoru' live showcases each band members individual talents and how they combine them, but my favourites are 'Ignite' for a rock song, 'Synchronicity' for something a bit jazzy, 'Senbonzakura' for their anime anthem, and Noushou Sakuretsu Girl' for fast rap and general craziness. Always watch them live, especially at their 'dai shinnenkai' (New Year's) concerts or their Premium Symphony Night (Vol 2) with a full orchestra and occasional Amy Lee from Evanescence.

If you ever feel like listening to more Mongolian style metal just in your spare time, there's another band called Tengger Cavalry that you may be interested in.
BUT. The main thing I would like to accomplish here is to request your reaction/analysis of Will Ramos - Sleep Token - Chokehold Vocal Cover
Since you've already reviewed Will doing stuff, this would be....a different side of Will.
AND, if you felt like, you could review/analyze the original song first! (Chokehold by Sleep Token) I think that you would actually really enjoy that band. And it would be kinda neat to see you do a "Double" reaction of sorts. BUT, if you only did one, then I would suggest Will's cover. And then maybe another video where you review one of Sleep Token's many other fantastic songs ("The Summoning" for example")
Cheers! You're amazing! My fav reactor on TH-cam and I show you to people all the time! Keep being you!

This music video always make me think of that tv show on Netflix Marco Polo.
That is more about the Khans, and there empire. ( Even thought its not historical correct )
Amazing show. Shame they ended it. Might have to see it again now because you reacted to this video :0
    Also. As always.
    Love your enjoyment of music.
And love to learn things. Random or otherwise.
Never noticed that Abba introes where a preview into the chorus.
Pretty cool in a nerdy way. Love that information.
    Also..also..
Best TEAM of 1 right here..
Rest of you got nothing on me..
Just don't team up on me.
    Also, also also..
You should do more collaborating with that little green guitar. You are great together..

Thanks for another insightful and entertaining analysis Lolli. I really, really, really think you would enjoy Heilung. They create Nordic tribal music that resonates strongly and their name translates to healing. I would suggest starting with the songs Anoana and then In Maidjen.

if you want more throat singing genre blends, i'd recommend ummet ozcan's xanadu which blends with techno instead of rock

it's called cardia (throat singing) not false cord. Although they do sound v similar. I also love that they use traditional Mongolian instruments instead of like the typical guitar, bass, drums, etc.

Im gonna spam this comment now under every video and i really really hope you recognize me one day and listen to this absolut banger of a song.
greta van Fleet- Heat above( jimmy kimmel live)
This guy is yodeling. Its a new band that sounds like straight from the 80´s, his voice is absolutly unqiue and those yodels give me chills!
I really think you appreciate this a lot and its super addicting listen to. Love ya

Your wonderful channel is So very equal parts entertainment, astutely informative, and genuinely HILARIOUS…… you also have, if you’re in fact a “ one woman show”, an amazing talent for editing! I just laugh and observe, and absorb whilst totally amazed at such seemingly unaffected talent! Very well done, as always! Quite the binge watch, but I must sleep now😂🤓😴! Btw, have you done, or do you do voiceover work as well? Continued success to you!

You hear on the violin, their national proud: the Horse 🤔🤔😉😉
You see the horse also in the video,
on the top of the strings/violin.
    You hear animals they respect.
The Wolf, the seagull, and the Horse (on the violin) the seagull and horse used for hunting, and bring live and prosperity, and power to stand up for possible dangour of other tribes
