Spencer, I have a lot of Pinus Sylvestris seeds that just broke their dormancy and started to grow. They are in a very narrow pot made out from a plastic bottle because I didn't expect that much seeds growing, should I let them grow up to 4cm or should I remove them right away into individual pots? Thank you.

I would say once they are around and inch tall and they have stopped growing fresh growth(going to bud)then separate them.thanks for watching.hope this helps

Same here. I've planted about a hundred white, norway, and black spruce that I dug up here and there. I collected a half grocery bag of cones and dried and banged them out and seperated seed from duff. Tried to but some from the state but they've sold out of everything!

Well done. I'm trying to start some white spruce. My cow pastures are being lined with christmas trees. About thirty years ago I planted about 2 dozen white spruce in my north most pasture. My children and I harvested maybe ten trees from that little stand. Great memories. The remaining dozen are pushing 30- 40 feet now. Hope to be blessed with harvesting the new patch in five or six years. I've got about 250 white, black, and norway spruce planted this year and bought some blue seed and cleaned some cones for white. Hopefully with your good advise I can get some more going.

    Hey there,
I got 5 seeds as a christmas gift, so I planted them right away. 3 of them showed up so far and they get me very excited. I was wondering about when should i separate them and replant them in bigger pots, since if they are together, their roots will get tangled and likely suffocate one another? Honestly, I'm very bad with plants and this is my first serious attempt after the beans in kindergarten. Thanks in advance!

Just wait till they get about 4cm tall and when the new growth isn't soft .Then you can repot them .Just use a spoon to lift them up carefully.

How long and what size pots should they be put in as they grow? I started 500 fir and spruce trees from seeds and they are now one year old in a one gallon pot. I plan on upsizing the pots but don’t know how big to go. I plan on growing them in lots for about 5 years before trying to sell the, as wind break trees. any advice would be helpful.

    • @spencersnursery1547

To answer all your questions -
Put seeds in damp not wet paper towel
Then put in fridge for a few weeks
Then put in compost around 1cm deep
Do all of this around winter time so when it warms up they will grow
After a few weeks they will sprout and you can just keep pottong them up as they get bigger or plant in the ground
      Hope this helps

Hello Spencer, last summer i stratified and sprouted spruce seeds in August, and because they were so small when the winter came in December, i brought them inside my house, where they all died of damping off fungus. I have more seeds now (June 2019), but they are not stratified yet. Do you think its too late in the year for me to stratify and plant them? If they are too small when the winter comes, is there a way to stop them from damping off if i was to bring them inside this winter?

No,I have started them at this time and are going to do some more.they are very hardy so you could leave them outside or put them in a cold frame.i just leave mine outside because if you think about it in the wild they just sit there.thanks for watching and the best of luck with your trees

Hiya, great video. Early this year I used this process to grow some ceder seeds and I've been successful. I have about 10 small trees about 1 inch tall. They've been outside in big tall pots all year (since April). But with winter coming and all the rain weve had this year I've lost a few and now a few more are turning a little brown and look weak and unhealthy. What's the best thing to do. Or should I just leave them to face the winter. Will bringing them in the house help or will the heat kill them. I don't have a green house so not sure what's best. Thanks. Tom

All I did for Norway Spruce was brought in a couple cones in late fall and put on paper plate. When dried they fall out. Put seeds in plastic bag dry and set in fridge for 1 month. Planted with wing sticking out of soil in a flat and covered with dome. Tada! Problem is is no one tells you how to care for them at 2" tall. They seem to be stunted. Does anyone know? I'm concerned they will dry up. I never was good with indoor Norfolk pines and afraid I may lose the seedlings because no one addresses how to take care of tgem before they go outside to nusery.

I found a spruce pine cone or I should say I pulled a spruce pine cone off of the tree set it on my dashboard in the sunlight which he did it and caused it to drop its seeds I took probably 20 seeds 30 put them in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel no stratification and six weeks later I had for seeds that had begun to be rude or even produce small needlesSo I transferred them to 16 ounce cups with a mixture of topsoil and Pete Moss in them… I will try to update this in a couple of weeks

I'm thinking about growing Christmas trees I have an acre and I live in Merced California, it's about 103 in the summer and 60 when it's coldest, when would be a good time to start my trees and do they take a lot of watering. can you tell me a little bit about how to start this.

    • @somerandomguy7458
      @somerandomguy7458 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Try starting them in late winter. By the way spruce seeds dont need stratification. Just sow on soil very lightly and keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate

Worst part is obviously summer or dead of winter as it can get really cold in the central valley
