    I forgot to say that the new wiper motor arrived yesterday for the ser 3 resto. I hadn't realised until watching you that the drive wheel is missing! And that the bloody switch probably won't work without fettling. So great video and thanks for the forewarning.

    just sorted my wipers after looking at this. I had to swap the little white ramp on the back of the wiper motor cam wheel 180 degrees as my wipers were parking at the top of the screen. Now it all works great. that park switch is very fiddley to fit and was mush easier to fit properly with the cam wheel removed for the motor. Thank You

    Just had MOT fail on a 89 110 with a similar issue.. Wipers not parking. After much messing about it turned out that the contact to the ignition live inside the new park switch I fitted was bent and not making. So as soon as wiper turned off it stopped. Little tweak in the right direction and all good!
    Keep up the good work Mike these videos are invaluable a great place to turn when you’ve ran out of ideas!

    You are a life saver! My TDCi Defender wipers decided to pile in on the M6 on a wet winters night. I finally got time to replace the whole system and for a TDCi you have to take the whole dash out unlike my TD5. After much phaffing and swearing I got the dash and ventilation system out and installed the new wiper parts. All went well until I tried the intermittent and wash settings when they did not return to park etc. I started fault finding, but could not find the problem. I was just about to take a sledge hammed to the Land Rover when I decided to call it a night and sleep on it. This is is when I found this video and thank f&*k I did! As you identified in your video a aftermarket motor does not always work with a Lucas switch. After a quick touch with a file the switch fitted perfectly and my wipers worked perfectly (well as well as Defender wipers will ever work). Also put a cable tie around the switch and the motor to stop it from moving just for good measure as I have seen that done before. In fact I was so happy I drove off without fitting the nearside wiper arm and blade!
    In all seriousness, it is videos like yours make home mechanic-ing within reach of a mere mortal like me. Please keep this up as I do really like your channel and although the steering wheel is on the wrong side in your videos I generally can make sense. Have a beer on me tonight!

    See the way your motor almost stopped/parked when fitted with one of the switches? Well my wipers are like this, they won't turn off when they have little resistance, this works out really well as while the screen is wet they keep wiping, once the screen is dry and the resistance increases they turn off, people pay extra for rain sensitive wipers and I have them for free! This is a great video, near fell off my chair when the weld went on the shonky gear, this is my life summed up. Keep up the great work Mike.

    This video made me laugh, Mike. I've only just seen it, but I have been in the same situation dozens of times. Just like you, I've spent hours building the "best combo" of aftermarket c**p to try and get a working system, but one job on a 110CSW 300Tdi was so bad, I had to just unbolt the motor off my own Defender and let it go out with that. I have found that if you can get a Lucas-branded box for a motor assembly, it comes with all the bits you need to just plug-and-play the new motor onto the end of the cable-rack. BTW, I have a drawer full of Chinese park-switches, and not a single one seems to be the same, but about 50% have sticking plungers as one of the faults.
    The best policy seems to be to encourage customers to bring their Defenders in as soon as the wipers run slowly, before the motor itself burns-out, and rebuild their racks with new wheelboxes (of which the pattern items are also a lottery......) and pounds of lithium grease pumped in there.

    I replaced my park switch last week. It lasted one day. Total rubbish. It came in a blue bag. Luckily I can get to it quickly in my 110.
    Great video again Mike!

      As you can see it is not easy trying to diagnose the problem - I think the OEM switches are the better ones, but as I tried to point out make sure the relay is 100% first.
      This vehicle came in with 4 dead relays - just wondering if the park switch aided in burning them out?

    It's perfect timing that I subscribed to your channel because I would have bought aftermarket parts for my Land Rover I just started working on a couple days ago now I will order all original manufactured parts from Land Rover I'm not professional so I'll need to make sure that my parts work,, thank you my friend Tucson Arizona

    This was a great video. Because everything I do to fix my Series 2A (and we're talking simple jobs) turn out like this, one thing after another. But ultimately each thing gets done. So I feel a lot better now seeing that you go through the same sort of surprising obstacles. Misery loves company. Thanks, Mike!

    Thanks for the video . I own an ex Australian army 6x6 110 perentie.. I purchased an ex military wiper motor from MOD. My only trouble was the 6x6 has a 115 degree sweep. The MOD part was for a 4x4 110 with a 90 degrees sweep. I swapped the gear and it works a treat.
    Thanks for the help in the video..keep up the great work..ta

    Hello there, I’m having a parking problem only on a 1995 disco. Stops in the middle of the screen every time. I’m thinking this is because the relay is switching off and the battery feed to continue to park is missing. However I can’t find a pin out to check which wire should be continuous live to allow it to do this. Or if that wire is fused and if so which fuse it. Any help will be greatly appreciated

    A little drop of 5 min epoxy on the end of the park switch actuator also gives the required clearance! The cheapo copies have about 2mm of slack in the switch that causes it not to engage the cam.

    • @juncakarina7690
      @juncakarina7690 ปีที่แล้ว

      can you explain that a bit better please, i just had a new switch fitted and now the wipers won't switch off at all. Lost here.

    • @alexw614
      @alexw614 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@juncakarina7690 The park switch is actuated by a cam on a gear that runs the wipers. It is likely that your new park switch is not engaging this cam, whether that because the cam is worn or the park switch is a cheapie. If it's the switch, you can simply extend the "plunger" part of the switch by placing a drop of fast-set epoxy on the end. Make sure you let it dry so that the plunger is facing down and the droplet hangs from it in order to ensure that it does slowly drip and dry elsewhere.

    Hello, my name is Terence, love your work. I'm from Australia, born in Lancashire.
    I have a Landrover Discovery ll, TD5, 2002 Year. My wiper motor is a DKD100620M, and doesn't have an external park switch. The switch has a problem on mine. Is there a way to fix the switch without changing the entire motor assembly.
    Warm regards
    Terence.

      I have no experience of these motors - they very rarely go bad, and judging by the colours of the wiring, I would say the switch is built in - but I cannot be 100% correct

    Hi Mike - TECH QUESTION - I want to check the oil pressure on my 1970 Series 2A
    Land Rover. The oil pressure opening seems to be something like a
    M10-1.25, but that is a bit loose. What is the
    tool or nozzle size I need for a perfectly fitting oil pressure tester?
    Do you need part numbers or more information? Seems to be some sort of
    British size fitting. I have an oil pressure switch which fits
    perfectly, however can't seem to find any bolt or thread to match this.
    What do you use to test oil pressure on an old Series 2A vehicle?

    Hey mike, I have a wiper issue.the intermittent setting doesn't work, the washer,park ,slow and fast work just fine, I have no movement at all when I set the wipers to intermittent ?, I was told there is no relay for this?, 1997 NAS defender ?, before I pull dash apart could this be a limit switch problem or a wiring problem at the wiper control?
    Thanks for vids and help I like to have a game plan in place before I start!

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damian,
      If they park it is not the park switch on the wiper - more likely the wiper relay is defective - there are lots of capacitors in those switches and if one has gone it can disable a function .
      Try a new relay first - but try get an OEM one like a Hella
      Part number is AMR2341G
      Robbers North have them for $95 US genuine, but you can get a Hella for less than half
      Getting a real cheap one is a waste of money
      My customer bought 3 or 4 Chinese ones before I got the OEM that worked
      The switches do go bad, and they are not cheap (well Chinese ones are)
      See if you can substitute a relay first- they are the same on a classic Range Rover - and as OEM are Hella, would not surprise me if they are the same as a VW one!
      Always the cheapest option first!
      Mike

    What a cumbuggeration these late land-rover facias are with these fancy motors. Thank God the ser 1 is simple! Got to the stage on a Ser 3 resto where the car is ready for facias to be fitted & wired. At this stage of a Ser 1 resto the car would be on the road in a week. It's going to take that long to restore this bloody facia crap.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry- this video went on for 6 hours so I must have missed it out as it is pretty self explicatory.
      The crank arm is attached to the wheel with a simple circlip with thin washers either side. It simply drops in to the wiper rack at the other end and it kept in place with the cover

    Original LUCAS got a bad rep, often undeserved, now you can see what absolute rubbish some of these CHINESIUM parts are. Problem is some suppliers sell anything as OEM for a quick mark up, even so called Original parts are now Chinese, where do you get good quality parts which don’t cause heartache or empty your wallet?.

      Never tested one for years but it will not be metric that is for sure - possibly without seeing one it could be 3/8 UNC - I know it is a parallel threads as they have a sealing washer
