    Courageous honest woman. How horrible to be attacked - see your daughter stabbed multiple times - - having long term injuries needing hand surgery while being there constantly to support your daughters amazing longterm recovery. Hard not to be overcome with emotion in a trial like this = hearing from these victims - knowing the horrible scene and trauma the young man acted out with cold abandon. Everyone that witness that violence - including first responders, restaurant patrons and staff = bear emotional scars from what he individually unleashed in unbridled unabashed anger and frustration. He is a trouble young man - - that is not however acceptable gateway to the type of violence he planned and executed that horrible day. Sorry for his parents and those who hold him dear - for his days free to be in their company are now gone by the actions of his own hands.

      no excuses for this heinous crime, hope the victims ... especially the young lady... will recover. the young man was undoubtedly severely disturbed and should have treated long before this happened. this also demonstrates our almost indifferent view on mental health as whole in society. dad...well the father... would have been wise to have a heart to heart about young romances with his son.as far as the conviction...bang on

    He just went wild. He had time to stab Madison 17 times, her mother several times, and the man who helped save them got cut up badly. Then he cuts his throat. All within a few minutes. He was a man on a mission and almost succeeded. Thank God for a loving mother, and a stranger that showed them more love and care. Than her ex boyfriend who claim to love her and her Mom. It's things like this that let's me know there are still good people in a world that seems more evil everyday. I don't agree with blaming his family. He has completely changed their lives forever too. Yet I understand her anger at them all.

      @@lilylolly8757 To be honest, I haven't followed this case closely but a) listening to his father's testimony, they are making a lot of excuses (especially re: football-related TBI's) and were not exactly proactive about addressing his stalking/mental health behaviors and went on about how convinced they were that he was a good kid who made a mistake and is capable of reform b) both the primary victim and her mother referred to attempts to relay concerns to the parents and anger about how they responded and what the outcome was for them.

      @stephaniew4140 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      @@jenninscho1980
      I don't want what I am saying to be taken as blame, because that's not what I'm about. I am just responding to statements like "Their hands were tied" and "There was nothing they could do" and "The victims' expressed distrust and anger at the parents is not valid". Those are dangerous narratives that facilitate a very broken status quo when it comes to DV and stalking and a whole lot of other problems. I actually think we need change at a systemic level to deal with these problems, alongside accountability on more personal levels. The problem with talking about it now is that it's just a bunch of wouldve's/couldve's/shouldve's unless we actually look at what we could learn from it to create a better, safer system for all of us.
      I do think, though, that the evidence points to red flags in Spencer's parents in terms of denial of his problems for many years, not taking the situation seriously enough when the crisis began and escalated, and how they see the situation with their son even now. Understandably so, to a degree.
      If you listen to the testimony of the victims themselves, you will clearly hear that they do not believe the parents were sufficiently responsive when they repeatedly tried to communicate the dangerous behaviors and red flags and get them to take seriously. Alas, in hindsight it is obvious that whatever was done was not enough.
      I assume almost everyone knows that local mental health care is overwhelmed and hospitalization is generally only for acute, emergency care to stabilize for 3-5 days or so, even when they accept an admission. He needed far, far more intensive treatment - and SUPERVISION. Or, swift criminal intervention - which means changing the laws/system. I think we need both funding for mental health/addiction and funding/changes to the laws about DV/coercive control/stalking. Today's mental health system is exceedingly ill-equipped to handle situations like criminal stalking, DV or homicide. These things are crimes and perhaps best handled through the criminal justice system. But we also need to take this stuff more seriously as individuals, families and communities and be better educated about the red flags and what to do about them.
      There was a very long build up to this crisis, which did not come out of the blue. His problems dated back to early childhood but were not addressed because they were not "crippling". That being said, if you actually thought your kid needed immediate hospitalization and intensive treatment as they were an acute risk to themselves and others (which I'm not sure his parents ever fully recognized and when they did, they were concerned only about his risk to himself according to their statements) and the hospital said there weren't beds (in this case, he was hospitalized and discharged to outpatient care they couldn't access), what would you do? Would you push for his admission/readmission? Would you provide 24 hour supervision yourself in the meantime? Would you keep shopping for an immediate bed somewhere until you found one? Would you allow him to go off of his medications without any psychiatric involvement? Would you leave them unsupervised and allowed total freedom in the community despite glaring red flags and desperate requests from others to do something?
      And if you were the parents of the 16 year old stalked girl, watching the hell she was going through in the relationship and after she left it, what would you expect of the other kid's parents, incident after incident?
      It's just not true that his parents - and us - couldn't have done better as a society to prevent such a horrific outcome for all involved. We could do better. If we had the will. We can do better. If we have the will. Again, I'm not saying that to blame, but to hold us ALL to account to do better.
      PS - This young woman is choosing the path of becoming an advocate for stalking and DV. My guess is that someday many more people will hear the full story of everything she and her parents went through and the efforts they made to try to make it stop, both during the relationship and in the six months that he escalated after the breakup leading up to the attack. Perhaps she will write a book when she is physically and emotionally recovered enough to do so. Or public speaking, which she mentioned wanting to do in an effort to save others from her fate.

  • @Beetmonster

    Ok, for all those denigrating what the victims wore to court for their statements...victim impact statements are sacrosanct in American court. During typical court proceedings, witnesses, defendants, & attorneys are all expected to dress formally (although there is never a legal decree for such). If a defendant and his/her attorney dresses in a T-shirt or ripped jeans, it would likely have a negative impact on a Judge's ruling, even if small.
    For victim impact statements, there is an unspoken blessing from the court that victims are allowed to dress however they want; speak as long as they want; use any language they want; and generally behave how they want, as long as they are not infringing on the rights of others. Courts show their deepest respect to victims for the suffering they have endured. As part of that respect, details like attire and foul language are not factored into a Judge's opinion for sentencing.
    When I saw the casual attire of Madison and her mom, I actually loved it, because it symbolized the court's love of justice and desire to protect victims. Madison could have worn a dress & pearls, which would have been ok. But the fact that mom & daughter showed up in casual attire, and they were given the utmost respect from the judge, demonstrates why victim impact statements are treated as sacred in American court. These statements are my favorite part of American justice. The victim can express any emotion they want, in any manner they want, and the court will not attempt to silence them. There's nothing else like it in the American justice system. It's beautiful.

Instead of criticizing others for their mistakes, maybe focus on your own issues. It's clear that you don't comprehend anxiety, PTSD, nerves, or the struggle of recovering from serious injuries while also caring for a child. Another point of contention in this comment section is their clothing. Can't you see they coordinated their shirts to show support? I'm sorry if their shirt doesn’t match with a dress, but come on! • @Beetmonster
      @Beetmonster 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've followed the story. I haven't come across much solid info about why Maddison's family is so hostile toward Spencer's family. My first instinct was to feel somewhat defensive for Spencer's family. However, my takeaway is that in cases like this, the most intense personal details are known only to the families. I've lived through an experience where violent crime touched a loved one, and in the resulting high-profile case, the press never learned the details that cut deepest. Maddison's family has their reasons. Their reasons are not necessarily for the public to know. I wish healing to them all, but I also have deep sympathy for why Maddison's family lays a big slice of blame at the feet of Spencer's family. I can't fathom the hell both sides have been through, and we spectators will never really know.

      I work in social work. I wish all families could have two parents. That would be the dream. However, it's not the reality. Millions of kids from single-parent homes grow up to be incredibly resilient and self-reliant. And in Spencer's case, he grew up in a two-parent household, and we see the outcome there.

      Curious if you think the presence of a dad might have changed anything? We could speculate that while Madison was being stalked for months, had a dad been in the picture, things theoretically might have ended differently. But that is speculation (i.e. fiction). She definitely had a fiercely protective mom and a brother 6 years older, and neither of those forcefields were enough to keep her safe. We could also talk about how Spencer came from an unbroken household with a dad, and he still ended up serving life in prison. The blame for this crime is squarely on the perpetrator.

    Dang! that man was possessed by the devil. This is something that could be avoided if someone in the family had paid attention to his behavior. This doesn't show up in seconds. Madison so it coming this is why she was running away from him way before this happened, so, if Madison saw it, how come no family member from his side so it at least to provide mental help before this happened? You don't need to go to Harvard to notice that something wasn't right on this man?

      It is so hard to find help for someone with mental illness. We also have parents who think their children do no wrong. I would put money down that the boys parents did not believe their son was a problem. I would venture to guess the boys parents thought it was all the girlfriend was the issue. Moral to this story. America needs to open hospitals just for people with mental illness. Parents especially mothers need to stop thinking their kids do no wrong. Really pissed off mom and dad got to hug their son goodbye. They should never be allowed to see that boy again!

      Nice. What an empathetic person you are. How comfortable would you feel being face to face with the man who stabbed you in the face, hand, and leg and almost killed your daughter right in front of you? She was EXTREMELY uncomfortable. And like most humans, she relieved some of that tension with a moment of humor by making faces with her daughter. The bigger question YOU should be asking, is why you don’t have enough compassion for someone else’s trauma to understand why they might do something like that under the circumstances.
