Get a mangrove monitor, 4ft is a big one, they're one of the smaller more manageable monitors that's ACTUALLY reasonable to keep. Ackie monitors are another small monitor species that most people can feasibly own without needing to build a GIANT enclosure for it. Don't give up on your monitor dreams!!
He'll get there soon. These things are usually non-linear, where years of hard work lays the groundwork for "suddenly" getting popular. His videos are certainly good enough to catch fire when the TH-cam recommendation algorithm finally figures out who all to recommend the videos too.
Lived in Thailand for 12 years .... in Thai the water monitor is called "Hia'" pronounced heeah, it is also one of the worst insults, curses to call someone "hia" ... will lead to violence. It is such a taboo to say that many people will not even call the lizards that, they will call it "dtua tong dtua neung". meaning body gold body silver, a reference to the yellow and white spot markings on the body, resembling coins. They also can be seen on some beaches hunting small crabs and looking for dead fish, they will swim in the sea also., the young ones are good tree climbers but the big adults stay on the ground or in water.
I enjoyed keeping and otherwise interacting with members of this species. It is very satisfying when one seeks out your company, or very carefully and precisely accepts offered food.
My buddy had one, bit realized he wouldn't get the planned larger space, so he found someone who wanted to breed her. She ended up on Clint's reptiles, such a squimy lizard
Cool Vid! I loved seeing these guys in Singapore. They were always super chill and would let you walk right past them. Huge commitment to keep one captive though. Cheers, Chris
I had one living under my house in Bangkok. They can get HUMUNGOUS, biggest one I ever saw had me mistaken it for a crocodile at first! They're pretty common and have adapted so well to urban life they're like scaly pigeons haha.
I'm in thailand right now, I just saw one of these absolute beauties out living in the wild in the Similan Islands... saw some pretty cool fish while I was out there aswell but this guy was the highlight for me... dont know how to attach the picture on here though which kind of sucks
What beautiful animals. I absolutely love them. Ever since I saw rescuers down under when I was a kid and saw that monitor was obsessed. Lol thanks for taking us along on your trips.
I wouldn't be worried about that. They aren't likely to attack a person unprovoked. I'm a responsible pet owner I would take the proper precautions to make sure my dog stayed safe, much like I do with the racoons in my area.
@swiggity swooty like I said, they aren't likely to attack a person. i never said they couldn't. There is tons of wildlife where I live and I have never had anything happen to any of my animals. I'm not saying it couldn't happen I'm just saying i have enough experience with wild animals that I wouldn't be overly concerned
@swiggity swooty Its ok that you would be afraid to have them in your area I'm sure a lot of people would, but I'm not one of them. There's no argument that you could make that will change my opinion on this.
swiggity swooty bruh chihuahuas can be aggressive as shit for one, they are far more prone to biting than most Asian water monitors, and second, you should be comparing the Asian water monitor to a dog which reaches a similar size, dogs that get around 50+ lbs on average, the Asian water monitor would hardly be a hassle to move around were it the size of a chihuahua
I know cocohusk can keep humidity great in tubs but for a monitor needing a larger enclosure I feel a substrate that can compact a tad better would help more. I have small & large PVC & wooden enclosures for all my animals & found that cocohusk doesn't retain humidity that well alone. So I did a dirt ,soil, husk-coir/moss mix & it held humidity way better.
You need more subscribers you're actual such an amazing youtuber one my favourite always come to see if you've done a reptile in wild during my research. Always love that you actually go to the wild to show how they're kept
Once again Dav, thank you for the amazing information. I almost got one last year, but decided to wait. After watching your video I dont think I am going to get one. My Tegu has her own room 20 foot by 10 to wander around in. I dont think putting a pool in that size room would work to well.
Your so dedicated ! Thank.you for all you do and you truly are a brave animal lover to venture to some of the places you go. I enjoy and respect all you do and thank you for continuing to rattle on!
Another great video! Pretty scary with the boat traffic... monitors didn’t even react to all those people. Unique reptiles. Definitely need to be dedicated to raise a baby. Love the trip! Keep those videos coming
Nicely constructed, informative video. The biggest water monitor I've seen in the wild was about 7 feet long on Hong Island on the Andaman Sea off Krabi. With the park and tourist facilities on Hong Island, the monitors there probably fall between the urban and wild classifications it didn't run for cover. If we have them in Northwest Thailand, I haven't seen them.
The temperatures will very by about 10 degrees so the ambient temp should vary throughout the year`28 in Dec and 38 at the end of June. The humidity also varies hugely.
Awesome! I've been very interested in getting a veranus salvator. Ive been doing a lot of research watching many videos & reading stories from people keeping them. I just think they're so smart and could be an amazing pet. I've read about monitors in the area you are in. I read that the people don't kill them there & don't mind having them around.
Ever since the TH-camr "The Lazy Peon" moved from UK to thailand. Ive been super interested in the country. Its so beautiful. Also he saw some wild monitors and showed it on his video. That was neat too.

I can’t believe how well humans and the monitors can co-exist like that. U cracked me up in the waterway market 😆😆 looked a little hairy there for a minute. Lol. That is impressive to see them survive on urban environment and it is sad at the same time to see them come down to that. What possible food are available in that environment? I wonder how many of them are caught for food.
Oh boy, have I been stoked for this video! That's the dream baby, right there. Pubba and my new retic will be occupying the majority of my time and space, it will be a minute until I have the means for one of those precious cherubs! Another excellent video in the greatest series on TH-cam 😊🤘 It brought me such joy to know that the babies they relocated were cared for properly and given the chance to live out the rest of their lives in peace 🤗💓 Slinky is the best! I’m glad they left the monitors alone ❤️
Video comes at a great time while I’m traveling Thailand, and it is pretty unbelievable how adaptable the monitors are to living alongside the locals
