  • On October 9th 1993, Brent Gretzky suited up for the Tampa Bay Lightning for the first time as he stepped out onto NHL ice for his debut in the league. Though he would never come close to matching the career of his older brother Wayne, the former 3rd round pick would have quite an interesting journey over his 16 years as a pro hockey player...
    This is the story of the Great One's younger brother!

    I can see the Lightning hoping the family name would help sell some hockey tickets in Florida like Wayne did for LA., but he absolutely had the stats to justify being drafted. If anything, the Gretzky name may have saddled him with absurd expectations. Though he was well over a point a game player through junior, and nearly a ppg in the IHL, it was probably fair to expect a little more than a point every 3-4 games. I'd say he would have needed at least a point every other game to really stick around in the bigs, given his prior play, and pedigree.

    Being drafted 49th overall today would make him a half-decent 2nd round pick instead of a third. Depending on how he performed in the minors or if he had a good training camp, it's possible he could've got a few games in based strictly on his talent. I don't know about 13 though lol

  • @Nonplused
    @Nonplused 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is a stat missing here and that is playing time. Most players that get called up go on the 4th line and see very limited ice time. So looking at how many points Brent got per game doesn't really tell the whole story unless you also look at how many minutes he played. It is hard to score from the bench. That said, the Lightning management was probably well aware of where Brent sat in the depth chart, which is why he mostly played in the minors. The fact that 2 other Gretzkys besides Wayne made it to the minors speaks to the genes and training program of the family. I don't know if there is another family out there that advanced 3 children to the top level minors, let alone had 2 skate in the NHL. Except the Hansons of course.

    Phil Esposito was GM for Lightning in the 90s. He’s used gimmicks to try and get people in the stands, like having Manon Rhéaume suit up for an exhibition game. So having Gretzky make the Tampa Bay roster based on his name is a very valid reason if you ask me. If you can’t have Wayne on the team, why not get his brother to try and get fans in the stands?

    Do one on Mario's big brother Alain Lemieux!
    He ended up coming to Pittsburgh but only played one game on his brothers team and Mario sat out that game with injury.
    He had some decently productive years. It would be interesting to know more about him.
    Here's Alain scoring a goal with Quebec around the 1:20 mark of the video.th-cam.com/video/PhFe513TgTc/w-d-xo.html

    Would I be the 1 out of 10 person since the first hockey player to come to mind was Brett Gretzky?

    He didn't put up that bad of numbers if he kept up with that pace he would have had a 25-point season that's better than some 4th liners I think he probably should have played more

    You sometimes only get one chance in the show. He's lucky he got a few tries however on an expansion team it is difficult not knowing your teammates tendencies etc

    He had a pretty good career in the minors. Of course he would not have been a dominant NHL player, but they should have tried him more ! Back then the mentality was not the same. Brent was not a star, so he did'nt get alot of opportunities and I guess he wasn't playing physical enough.

    The Gretzky brothers have the most combined points of any pairs of brothers in NHL history.
    Wayne - 2857. Brent - 4.

    When you have a brother as talented as Wayne, peoples reflex is to compare you to him, thus creating unreasonable expectations almost impossible to fullfil. Hmm he's not as good as his brother. This statement is by definition negative right from the start, so, instead of evaluating the man's own merit you start him somewhere down there... I'm not sure that Brent was fairly compared to other more regular players. As stated in the video many other players with much lesser production remained and played much longer in the NHL. I believe he should have been allowed a better chance to prove his talent and althought he would not have performed as much as Wayne, I'm sure he would have been a good hasset for any NHL team.
