This is mental toughness on Timos part. He is a class act and a role model for kids. No insane screaming after ever point- just quiet determination. Wonderful.
I never taught Timo Boll was a world number 1 in 2018. Timo you dont have to retire yet you still got it, most old school are now retired, you can still beat new bloods and show how its done, nice job.
@@rhyzekarnage71544th ball, Timo does a block with his backhand. It's called soft because he goes back with the hand, creating a slow ball and slowing down the game.
Keeping a lead is mostly just a matter of mental strength. And NEVER show your opponent your fear or concerns. It's what drags you down that lifts them up.
At 10-4 in the deciding match the pendulum swung from physicality to mentality. Lin Gaoyuan lost the battle in the mind before he lost it over the table.
It once happened to me in a double. We were 2:10 behind. From then we attacked every ball. And everyone hit, 10 times in a row. Thats about 20 years ago and I still can't believe it.
5:20 First time seeing professional table tennis from this angle. Everything is so much more entertaining from here. I think this goes for most sports such as volleyball. But I understand why they have to do that angled bird-eye's view.
Worst reaction ever, he should change his coach. Still can't believe this trash reaction from someone who is supposed to support you in win or in lose ...
I was the 'Lin Gaoyuan' of our annual church fall festival family games where a bunch of us 'regulars' would sign up for table tennis. We were basically 'garage players'. I usually ended up in the final against 'John', and our similiar ages mid-late 50's. I lost 7 years in a row, and using the rediculous 'Dan Seemiller grip.' In 3 of those years I had a 3-to 5 point lead for match and lost (choked) I even tried one year to play him with a traditional penhold grip to beat him, which didn't work at all with that non backhand. The 8th. year I finally beat him going back to the Seemiller grip (which is still a lousy backhand) I ran around almost every backhand to hit a loop forehand, and Im very quick for my age. I think I hit a total of THREE backhands the whole game, the game being 21 points. The ONLY thing I changed was my mental attitude, I was relaxed, and my mindset was to have fun, dont sweat and fume a lost point (common for me UP TO that point) I mostly had a blank expression on my face and only concentrated on the ball and my opponents racket, never even looking at his face, blocking out the children playing other games in the background, the gallery, and others milling around. If l lost a point I forgot about it and played the next point. The game is MANY points. If I won the match great, if he wins, that was O.K., we are not on the world stage as TT professionals. Needless to say I won the match by 5 points, and during that match for one BRIEF moment I thought 'Oh-oh, I'm ahead, now he's gunna catch up and Win'. I threw that outa my mind quick. Winning was wonderful after 7 years of choking the 3 of those 7 years head-to-head matches with John. And after ALL THAT, being 65 years old last year I tried and converted to the Penhold RVP grip and got the dream backhand I never had (for my level) and it's my best shot! I thank the Wang Hao videos, that grip and style. What a wonderful hump to overcome after SEVEN years, BUT I even changed and also improved..I WAS the church member Lin Gaoyuan...LOL!!
Actually it was the third time in 2017. In Chinese Trials 2017 he led 3-3, 10-7 against Ma Te (lost). Against Xu Xin in WC (led 10-5 and lost). And now Timo (10-4).
If you are actively playin tt you kinda get a sence, when the game is over- you feel it when the enemy is mentally so much ahead even if you got a lead- that lead means nothing at that moment. The moment you think about loosing or the enemy being better than you- you loose
this is table tennis! naa gyud panahon nga malason kag kalit. ug naa pud panahon prehas kang timo.. Good Job timo! keep it up caster! really need a heart medication for this game, heart stopping...so thrill...just wow! greetings here from ubec ph.
Lin Gaoyuan should've tried to serve a long one and fought it out. At the end, he was too predictable with the short reverse pendulum to Boll's forehand and too much reliance with going to his own forehand for the backhand flick
Hindsight is 20/20 and all that but I reckon you're right, a long serve might have been more likely to force the error. Then again, there was a time out and you'd have thought that that the advice he got during the time out was informed on statistics of how TB reacts during points where the pressure is on.
It easier to say that he should have varied the serve. But if you noticed timo ball, he too used the reverse pendulum time and time again and it worked.
Kevin Zheng I really don't understand what Lin did he knew that he would serve him in his FH side as Lin will try to a BH flick so instead he should have just placed the ball and finished it
When two players are pretty much equal in technique, then mental game is what determines the winner. This is a real good example of that. Both are amazing players, but Timo, probably being older, can keep his cool under extreme pressure and can continue to perform his best. Lin starts to tense up when victory approaches and can't keep up his level of playing. Then when you loose a couple of points the FEAR so easily kicks in: "What if I loose from this position!" And when you start thinking that way, you tense up even more and down the drain goes your performance. To keep cool under extreme stress takes a certain kind of personality AND a lot of experience which Timo certainly has. And once he has won a couple of times in these conditions, he knows that what ever the score board says, anything is possible if you just keep your cool and fight for every single point. That is what champions are made of.
If it was a match between Chinese players, they might even started a performance with mutual agreement in 10-4 score... That’s how decisive it looks. And yet... Age is just a number to Timo Boll!
Timo Boll shares the same smile whether he wins or loses. Such sportsmanship.
He is balanced inside ❤
This is mental toughness on Timos part. He is a class act and a role model for kids. No insane screaming after ever point- just quiet determination. Wonderful.
Yeah. Truly agree. Always screaming really irritating buddy.
its amazing what a headband can do.
I miss Ma Lin :/ Do u ?

Big respect to the legend Timo Boll.

T-Mobile is really missing a huge sponsorship opportunity. ;)
Lmaoooo
Hey man, I'm sure Timo followed your down picking advices to improve his wrist strength and his technique :)
Ohhhhh Timo boll, T-mobile, they sound similar! 😂
Great commentating by Adam B. Made me noticed that soft block from the backhand at 5:10. Epic match. Legendary performance by Timo.

Absolutely cool scenario
Indeed
It looked like he was going to cry
Boll ist ne absolute Legende. Unfassbar, was sich in vielen seiner Matches abgespielt hat. Ganz großes Kino und einfach unglaublich...🏓😯
3:23 even the photgrapher in the background is impressed :D
Haha
was looking for this
I saw that too. Lol
Lin: I'm gonna win.
Boll: Uno Reverse Card
Haha bro, so true
more like uno reverse serve
More like: I’m about to end this man’s entire career.

Here 7 years in the future, after Lin Gaoyuan blew a 3-0 lead to Ma Long in the 2024 World Cup final. The choking never ends
Lin Gaoyuan- Hao Shuai of this generation.
Travelator so true haha
決勝局從領先打到被逆轉,這在中國選手之中相當罕見...感謝波爾帶來這麼精采的比賽
This here is pure experience. Lin was a promising player back then but Timo had nearly 15 years more under his racket. What a comeback he had!
Def one of the greatest comebacks to this day.
This is what experience gives you. A heart of a champion and a mental strength of a legend
This never gets old.
Chinese team gonna beat Lin when he gets home.
Jake Giuliano hahahahhah
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Not exactly.. They are all always wary of Timo Boll.. Over the decades!!
Invokations A what exactly do you mean?
Invokations A lmao my ass
The quality is so good even scoreboard flags are moving lmao
Thrilling! The world needs to know how exciting table tennis is 🏓
Great quality of the video. Hope that ittf will upload all there videos in 1080p/50
Respect still remains in 2019!!!
Look at Lin's coach reaction throwing fit and all 😂 priceless
Worst reaction ever, he should change his coach. Still can't believe this trash reaction from someone who is supposed to support you in win or in lose ...
That’s Liu Guozheng… how ironic cause Liu himself saved 7 match points against Kim Taek Soo in that 2001 Osaka team match in the deciding match.
