    Junk boat, junk results 😂 Also, it’s Downtown JULIE Brown. She was an MTV VJ in the 1990s, a little after your time there Barb 😂 Let me guess, clogged fuel filters from a dirty junk tank and engines are air-bound. Genius

    Had same problem. Shift lever sticks in reverse. Unhook cable and move by hand. Adjust cable. Just a little so it doesn’t push to stick point. We had a ride through marina doing donuts. Happened three times. We have since removed computer controls and installed cable controls. No more problems 😊

      I love technology, but sometimes the old tried and true just works better. Cable driven throttle and shift gives you plenty of warning signs before they fail. Potentiometers, power supplies, logic boards and actuators work great......until they don't.

      Great solution!! I HATE TECHNOLOGY!!!! I want my car to have carburetors and zero computerized anything. I'd want my trawler to be old-school also. Electronics and salt air just don't make any sense to me. Mechanical injection and cable controls, please!

      What causes issues like that? Did salt water damage the computer controls? One thing that has scared me from owning a yacht of any kind is that they seem to be getting more and more complicated as each year goes by, LOL...

    This type video helps in many ways. Messing around in boats takes many forms. I started at 11 in the family tin boat in Lake Ontario moving up to a Taiwan Turkey (trawler) in my 30's in N California. CG Six-Pack license salmon fishing off Eureka. Finally realized I love best my Arima 19 day boat, launch and retrieve, sleep at home. Own a 14' tin boat and enjoy exploring Thousand Islands. Love watching cruisers but know it's not the life for me.

    Hooper drives the boat. The captain is in charge. The crew did their job. As captain I want no input unless I ask for it. As crew I wait for the captains command. In that situation the captain is processing so much!!! That was incredible filming and response to high stress. Kudos to all.

I used to own a boat but I only ever did day trips as we live by the sea it was easy, the kids loved it but what you are doing is a whole different scale. We just put an offer in on a 1982 56 Hatt. It's been accepted. Now we do Sea Trials and the Survey. Sooooooo excited. Been following you guys for a long time - you and your wife remind me quite a bit of my wife and I. Your channel is informative and entertaining and I must say has gone a long ways towards convincing us to buy a Hatt. I had my eyes on a 42 Jefferson (my previous boat (pre-marriage) was an 18' Bayliner!) and I thought an interim step would be smart. Probably is the smart play lol - but damn! Those walk in engine rooms look pretty good to a 300lb 59 year old who isn't really wanting to do a lot of boat yoga as I maintain my equipment (and I fully intend on doing as much of the work myself as possible). Anyways - I wanted you to say THANK YOU for what you two do! By the way....we are in Louisville and have a house a second home in Tarpon Springs. We will mostly likely keep it in Florida

      @@tryingnottosink9107 Appreciate your answers! Following you two for a while tells me this - you are ANYTHING but idiots lol. Last night I watched the episode where your Turbo blew up. So - the rabbit hole opened and I tested myself. Lyn noted the soot (great job Lyn) and you connected the dots to the Turbo. I asked myself if I could have done that. Several Google searches later I was able to see exhaust leaks will generate that soot and deeper down I went into "what the hell is a riser", "why is it cooled". "Why do Detroits have 2 cycle vs 4 cycle". "Why do 2 cycles use turbos". My Geek was totally engaged. My undergrad 100 yrs ago was in Mechanical Engineering but I've been in Management for 30 yrs so I'm woefully inept at fixing an engine. It is a passion, rekindled by you two and, again, I thank you

    • @Prototheria
      @Prototheria ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you went from an 18 to a 56 with nothing in between, and what sounds like a long break between ownership between the two boats? How'd you manage to get insurance? I'm asking because we're close to making the same step, but to a 50, and we're having a hard time finding coverage without an intermediate first.

    • @lcarlson7725
      @lcarlson7725 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Prototheria my insurance guy said he could insure us but we'd need a captain for a while to learn the ropes. We ended up not going through w the purchase during the survey. We are back looking again. We are looking looking at 45-55' now (but If another 58 Hatt comes up we would be interested)
      I do think looking for something smaller is prudent and even 45 feet is pretty big but we intend to live aboard so we don't want to go under 40

    Good job on recovery... I have had similar distress. Engine was stuck in fwd during docking. Btw if you need load your engine in gear on dock put one fwd and the other in reverse. It reduces the load on the dock and line but allows you load and test the shifting propulsion. It is part of precheck a weekly dock run of the mains 16v92ta

      With my bad luck, praying I don't sink is exactly why my boat will sink. Praying that I don't get hit is why someone will lose control of their boat and crash into me! That's why I still haven't bought a boat and probably won't when I reach retirement age. Had a BAD experience sailing my great-uncle's Swan 50-footer out of South Florida. Calm waters, clear skies and straight towards us is a blind as a bat dude who somehow doesn't see us. Took a hard left to get around him. It has made me rethink whether I want to share the waters with people like that. I think I'll save my retirement money and buy a red Corvette. Probably a heckuva lot cheaper too, LOL...

    I had the same kind of problem on a sailboat I owned. Right after I cleared my slip, the transmission decided to let go and start slipping. I had no control over the boat. To make it worse, there was a 20+ knot wind pushing me. I managed to keep my boat from hitting anybody else and as soon as I was in the clear, I immediately dropped my anchor to hold position. Soon I discovered my next problem. The USCG had closed the bar due to bad weather so the towboat driver could not come rescue me. Luckily, the USCG decided this would be good training for the new guys and put me back in my slip. One of the worst days of the water for me for sure. It is such a helpless feeling not being able to do anything to control your vessel.

  • @funnyfarm5555

    You are probably doing this but alway if running a diesel engine use an algaecide in your fuel. The algae will plug up lines, filters and anything else it can. Cheap insurance. The algae forms because when the fuel goes down in a tank and air is drawn into the tank, then the moisture condensates and the algae starts. If it gets bad enough you have to empty the fuel tanks and have them cleaned and start afresh. Enjoy your trip.
    I was stationed in Key West in the military and rebuilt a boat hull and put on a new outboard engine. It always intrigued me about the inland passage and in the back of my mind I thought about a trip to the bahamas. I remember the arduous trip to Miami; 121 miles over 42 bridges. Took about 5 1/2 hours. Then before I knew it I was in South Korea.

    Ed ... you said it yourself ... 12:44 "Normally we're coming down from Philly and we work out all the bugs in the first few stops." Your boat doesn't like being left in Florida and ignored all winter. Those winter start-ups are good for it. Penn's Landing awaits your return.

      It will have to keep on waiting! 2000 miles round trip x 0.75 miles per gallon x $4.30 for fuel = $11,466! 😁

    Code 62 is a servo jam. Look in the box and see if there is an obstruction. I have the command error codes on a sheet of paper if you want me to send them to you. Always check your steering and propulsion before throwing lines off.

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have the codes as well. The servo was fine. The tranny stuck in gear and that cause the servo to send an error and everything to shut down. I should have worked the shifter a few times before I left the dock since the boat had been sitting.

    Zf controls?? Is it the little plastic "belt" that crapped out? Or the gear drive that engages the lines to the transmission?? I had those on my last boat, similar issue when parts wore out. I kept a set of those gear drive belts on board once i got some. I liked those controls overall, minus the delay!

      I have a whole spare unit on board. It was just a stuck shifter.

    Microcommander systems can be scary when they suddenly quit working. They are usually installed on larger vessels than can do some serious damage if not under control. Good job for keeping her off the other boats in the marina. Cheers 🍻

    As a destroyer sailor a long time ago (during the beautiful Reagan years at first) i can say that ship handling is 95 percent boredom and 5 percent sheer terrror. I think you were in the 5 percent on that sea and anchor detail. Fair winds and following seas.

    • @scottcarlson2534

      By boredom i dont mean to denigrate the majesty of being at sea. Challenging the most amazing force of the sea. I just mean when you cross oceans sometimes you dont see any other ships for a very long time.

    A lesson learned (bump fwd/astern on both engines with lines on) and now added to your pre-underways, good for you.
    BZ for keeping calm and utilizing your crew to monitor the boat's position in the fairway, having fenders ready, and getting lines across as soon as possible. Not surprised to see the help you got from the folks at Titusville Marina, always good folks there.
    One tidbit to toss based on our experience. When we're headed off cruising for more than one day from our home marina on the Canaveral Barge Canal, the first day underway is always a shortie (up to Titusville mooring field for northbound trips, or down to Cocoa Village, or Dragon Point anchorage) just to ensure things are running well and it's a quick return if necessary. I think you did the exact right thing to not press on that first day. Besides, Cocoa Village is never a bad stop, even if you don't go ashore.

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  ปีที่แล้ว

      Running the shifters is now definitely part of our start up routing. We do the same, a short run on the first day or town to work out the bugs. As you'll see in the next video, we didn't get them all worked out before the crossing.

    We just retired and our 39 yr working goal was to buy a power boat and cruise. We have many Family and Friends that want to cruise with us. Can I ask you what is "customary" for shared expenses? 50/50? We provide the boat, guests pay expenses? What is considered reasonable?

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  ปีที่แล้ว

      We are not a good source for that info. We pay for all expenses. We just expect our guests to pay for their own food and drinks while dining out and to chip in for provisions when we eat on the boat. We figure we would be paying for fuel and marinas regardless of whether we had guests or not.
