I'm 56 years old, playing 9 months (900 Player). GM, Mr. Akobian is in my opinion, one of the best beginner chess instructors in the world. This is because he teaches so "you get it". Young or old, you can see people learning with his instruction. These lessons make very solid chess players and for that I'm very appreciative of these videos. Thank you..... SM
Yeah. I find I learn allot more from his videos than from other masters. He goes allot slower and gives you time to work the next move out for yourself rather than just outright telling you what to do.
Love that adorable little girl who keeps identifying the moves so confidently. I bet she's a terror in chess matches. As an adult beginner myself, I found this was a great lecture. Thanks very much.
Varuzhan has probably had enough of strict Eastern-European teaching which only hampers the children's free thought processes. Even if the sweet little girl answers uncorrect every time, he keeps both her and the rest of the class interested, eager and inspired. They are not afraid to answer. They keep their focus for the entire class. I like this approach
I'm glad you're all enjoying these videos. We wanted to create a dynamic and engaging online community classroom. Stay tuned for new lectures from GMs Akobian and Seirawan and IM Levan Bregadze!
Here is a breakdown hoping it helps ;) 6:58-Dutch Defense 10:29-King Pawn Opening 22:08-Decoy Sacrifice 30:08-Second Decoy Sacrifice 34:27-Fork 35:58-Pin (Absolute) (Relative) 39:39-Scewer 43:42-How to Fork with a King
"This was a tough one..." "No." "Well it took a long time...It's not like you found it quickly." Haha, he always gets a little indignant with the children. I love it.
WOW!!! This chess lecture by Varuzhan is clearly one of the most inspiring videos I've watched on TH-cam and the Internet in general. Thank you so very much indeed!
These videos are of extremely high educative value and that you offer the internet community a free access to such content is just marvellous. I am grateful no end. And I absolutely adore all the of the lecturers. GM Akobian is great -- patient, tolerant, interested in considering seriously even the wildest of the proposed moves :).
Thank you. The explanations are clear, repeated, you speak slowly so that everyone has a chance to listen and understand. You stimulate students to think and make choices.I have learnt a lot with your lessons.
just want to add my thanks to STLChess club for making these videos available to all of us. And...I must say GM Akobian is a really fine teacher. He has been a great help to me and I hope he will continue making videos of his lectures..His method of waiting and forcing students to think is really what makes him stand out. He really covers all the bases.
Its wonderful, something such as 12:30 ... Varuzhan can hear them thinking ... such patience and paternal concern at their development. The excitement of meeting and being helped by someone so inspirational is a very special opportunity, they are so lucky to meet a good teacher, its a nice feeling.
34:06 thats some really cool tactics for a new player to look at as an introduction to tactics. Its not mainstream beginner chess but is so important and cool.
It's 7 years after and I , a longtime relatively strong club player, just discovered this GM. Great patience, causes kids to generate ideas, does recap on lessons. Discriminates between tactics and strategic planning and is obviously from the Soviet School. His ideas and the clarity of presentation reminds one of Petrosian who played "boa constrictor" chess. I learned a fair bit and that goes for his kid presentations and his adult ones. He inserts purpose into every move so that one never plays planlessly. I shall watch every vid he's made and give experts and IMs a real challenge. Great teacher!
I am now in the rabbit hole of Varuzhans teachings as I learn chess, I am compelled to call out the attention needy annoying kid who is quick to be called on often before he even knows what move he will say. If someone knows him, tell him I think expending your excess energy through physical effort might help him think more methodically before attending chess lessons. and yes, this talented little girl gives me hope for humanity. May her endeavors promote world peace.
I think he's a great teacher, has lots of patience and is very clear. I only wish there weren't such long gaps when he gives the students time to answer!
Well obviously she has no care for social appearance and probably older beginners saw the same moves and keep it to themselves fearing to appear smarter than the others(like in math class some students have already worked out the equations in their heads and don't raise their hands for reasons stated above). Not trying to discredit the young prodigy in anyway... She is a fast leaner.
Simply a fantastic lecture!. But, I generally see that books/blogs/video lectures not spending some time in explaining "why we have to control those four central squares"?. Although this is a lecture devoted to tactical ideas, some 10 min is worth of a explanation regarding that, I thought. I agree that there could be already numerous books/blogs/video lectures explaining how to control and exploit the center, but there could be less material where one is explaining at great length why we need to control those four central squares, with some generic patterns?. Or else it just remains a feeling that good center means a good advantage(although we sense it while playing). May be someday machine learning algorithms may tell us, whats actually happening when you are dominating those central squares.
if you control the central squares your pieces have more value. just imagine a knight in one of the 4 corners. only 2 possible moves. put a knight theoretically in the center and you have 8 possible moves...that's the explanation i know.
Idk if this is still relevant for you, but Yasser Seirawan explained that the most effective squares are where your pieces are attacking the most squares in the enemy's camp. The enemy's camp is of course the other half of the board. These most effective squares are around the center for most of your pieces. Besides, in my opinion, it's harder to move - because the center connects to both flanks.
fyi: the rewind at the end seems like it would be valuable for retention during your classes. you could breeze through it as a reverse review instead of speeding to reset.
2:58 the kid isn't wrong. It's a protection move just in case the opponent plays an anomaly move. I believe the trap’s nomenclature is ”legal trap.” Even after the bishop moves to h4, the knight can still capture pawn to set up the trap.
At 7:48 it is better to go Bf3, because after ... f4, when you open queen with e3, and he doesn't take the bishop (to prevent the checkmate), you win a pawn with e3:f4, g5:f4, B:f4.
Thank you for the lesson. The instructor is awesome. Most of these kids seem really slow though. Even more credit to the instructor for his patience. you can tell for the excitement when he calls on people that he loves the game of chess. Thank you for improving my game.
I was very impressed when I watched a video done by him. Then I watched thiis one and thot that he was terrific. I looked down in the comments and saw that I am not alone in my assesment. My 7 year old grandson is learning chess and I am having a bit of trouble beating him. We are both going to start watching these together. We'll see who the last dude standing is. It might be him. A big thank you to the St. Loius Chess Club. Do you have a statue in front of Busch stadium?
Filipino Hearthrob, if you can do that it's cool . but do not assume that you are the only one learning. never take your opponent for granted. lastly once u play online don't be like so many filpino players who run away from competition when they lose . u come from a warrior people and chess players need that component to do well. peace and enjoy ur chess
Wow, this guy is such an excellent teacher , at least here with audience of kids , he should be a kindergarten teacher. That's given that English is not his first language.
at 14:59, black to move, isn't it a better idea to use the queen to get out of check, instead of moving the king or placing the dark square bishop on D7?
There is something about this guy that makes him really likeable.
he knows what he's talking about and he's patient
Charisma and patience.
I feel like I'd trust him with my life.
ikr! for some reason I only watch his lectures

That little girl in the background answering most of the questions is gonna be a grandmaster one day
Pretty sure you need to be better than taking minutes to see simple tactics to be a grandmaster. :P
Or she is going to be the most annoying person in every class and every lecture in college.

dont be an antagonist StopFear.
It seems to be a boy , not a girl just a little boy
This guy is a great teacher. I'm almost 32 and just started loving the game only about a month ago, I lose all the time. This is already helped me.

GM Varuzhan Akobian is my favorite lecturer, he is very good teacher. Keep up good work, GM Varuzhan
Thank you for being clear and not rushing. You are a gifted teacher. Not sure why your video failed to pause for me.
He is an absolutely superb teacher. Those kids were quite fortunate to get that quality of training. I'm sure it's served them well.
I love the way the Akobian sir teaches. He is a great man. Love you from Pakistan. I learned a lot from you sir. Tnx a lot.
He is one of the top three lecturers from this scholastic center series. He is good at not confusing an already confusing environment like chess.
I like how long he stood quietly at one point there. He's making the students think about options of the pieces without just telling them.
It's so lovely to see this video... Feels myself to be a kid again learning chess lessons.
He gets excited when he says checkmate and it makes me feel like I'm learning how to fight people. Hahaha
GM Akobian you are an Excellent lecturer !
