Facing a seemingly impossible task, the improbable happened for the No. 15 Notre Dame women’s basketball team Saturday night. Just two days after a home loss to No. 22 Syracuse, the Fighting Irish (15-4) fought their way to an 82-67 win over the No. 8 Huskies to hand the hosts their first loss on the Gamble Pavilion floor in nearly four years.
Two of the top women’s basketball programs of all-time punched back and forth through a first quarter that saw the Huskies (17-4) take a 21-14 lead. UConn pushed the pace and jumped out to a 30-18 lead before Hannah Hidalgo and Sonia Citron hit back-to-back 3-pointers to key a 12-0 Irish run to tie the game 30-30.
Citron had been quiet in the first quarter. The junior took just one shot in the game’s first 10 minutes, but she came to life in the second quarter with nine points to kickstart an offense that hit 12 of its 18 shots in the quarter. Citron finished with 15 points.
Hidalgo beat the buzzer with a 3 to close the half, her third in as many tries, to give Notre Dame a 44-35 lead at the break. Hidalgo’s 19 points at halftime help Notre Dame close the half on a 26-5 run.
The freshman point guard ended her night with a new Notre Dame freshman record 34 points in the upset victory after scoring nine points in a fourth quarter that saw Notre Dame outscore the Huskies 22-10.
Notre Dame was dominated in the paint in Thursday’s home loss to Syracuse, but the Irish established their own paint dominance against UConn Saturday night. Maddy Westbeld and Nat Marshall combined to score 33 points to help the Irish to a 46-26 paint advantage and a 37-27 rebound advantage.
Westbeld was able to score inside and outside. The senior forward missed all three of her first-half 3-point tries, but nailed 3 of 4 from behind the arc in the second half. Marshall gave Notre Dame eight of her 10 points in the pivotal second quarter run. Only four Irish players scored in the game and all four of them finished in double figures.
Aaliaya Edwards did her best to keep UConn in the game in the third quarter with 10 points on 5- 6 shooting from the low post. She led the Huskies with 23 points, while Citron’s defense helped limit Paige Bueckers to 17 points, eight of them coming by the time the game had been decided. - กีฬา

@@judlug5821 Scott from Arkansas and Crooks from Iowa state probably the best two I'm familiar with. Then Kansas got a nice guard, Brooks from NC State a dawg. Scott need to be in the conversation with Juju and nem imo. The girl from Texas probably more known than the rest even though I can't think of her name but she a seasoned freshman. It's a few more that you see the potential but they haven't been consistent like that.
no....2019 recruiting class for S. Carolina...historical run...but this was a fun game to watch.

Hannah Hilalgo played a helluva game no doubt, but the real UConn killer in this game was Maddy Westbeld. Just killed UConn 's spirit everytime they looked to make a run down the stretch.
Geno fell asleep. How you let ND go on a 22-4 run before you call a timeout? The not feeding Edwards in the 4th.
It was Nika Muhl getting into foul trouble and fouling out as soon as the 4th quarter started.
@@KelzKelz He sure did. Worse, "Tubby" Auriama never let Cadence in the game. That girl can run & jump & shoot. If Geno still had "it" he would have tried Cadence, Inez and Dingleberry on Westbeld. The idea is to throw 5 different defenders on a hot hand so that he/she makes five different adjustments. That many changes should screw even the best layer up.
Let's face it: not only did Hidalgo play a super game, but also Geno blew it out the kazoo by dozing off on that 22-4 stretch. One thing he should have done was to tell his girls that they need to work on a blind side steal every time Hidalgo drives into the paint. That's because she is lazered in on the rim while the other chicks give her room to work by standing back & standing by. Time for Geno to retire to the restaurang business,.

Nika has never been effective when Uconn plays a true D1 school. Simply put, she does not possess the talent for that level of play.

And how many Freshmen players were on the starting five at Notre Dame? This was a fun game for everyone....competitive all the way. Not to worry. UCONN learned a lot and it's a long way until the National Championship. Thanks to all the players on both teams who treated us to a wonderful evening.
Their hard work and sacrifice is huge and we get to just sit back and enjoy the game!

A Bad Day at Blackrock for Uconn & Paige. They can't feel good about that game.
I only got into this because my late dad--huge ND fball fan--said we need to watch one of the women's sports too. I admit I only follow the highlights..time constraints...but having watched the team off and on for 20 years....I have never seen anything quite like Hidalgo. Yeah Diggins et al were great but this kid can break down the D at another level.
Paige is a great player who had a bad game. Every athlete does once in a while. In these situations, the rest of the team needs to step up, and UConn just doesn't have the depth right now.

Just a week ago everyone and their mother was filling the comments with how Paige is the best player in the game. Geno has a video about great players if you need a definition of what great players do.

Nothing says why the game fell apart in the last half of the quarter for UConn than Bueckers 6’0 140 unable to shoot in the paint and passing back out to Ice Brady 6’2 185 waiting outside the 3 point line and throwing up a brick.

ND looked really good and did it in UCONN's house. Griffin was sorely needed and Amari was no help. Not looking good going forward.
UConn suffered when Nika got into foul trouble early and fouled out early in the 4th after playing only 19 minutes of the first 30. When she was on the floor UConn was +13. When she was out UConn was -28 losing the game by 15.
With the loss of Aubrey UConn's roster is five starters, two of them Freshmen, yet still one of the best starting fives in WCBB, but very little bench.
When Nika fouled out early in the 4th UConn was down 59-60. With her out ND closed the game 22-8. UConn cannot afford to have any starter foul out.
Also take into account that when mulh left the game Uconn was behind. They tied the game at 60 without, the difference in the score is KK Bradford went out of the game Marshall came in and ND went on a run. Even you know Muhl has nothing to do with that. She was guarding the slowest player on the floor Anna DeWolf..
Go back and watch the game with tv on mute. And watch both teams. Mulh should have started on the bench

@@7newtothegame - What I said is what happened. Without Nika UConn is not the same team. UConn was +13 during rhe 19 minutes whe played and -14 the 11 she did not. During the last nearly 10 minutes UConn was -14 losing by 15.
Slice it any way you choose, but when Nika is on the bench UConn is a weaker team.

I do know they are a faster and better team if Geno would sit her bouncing a.. on the bench and let players with more talent play. So they can bond. Go back and look shortly after she fouled out. Kk Bradford got hurt. Kk Bradford is ND's achilles heel. (The only good play she made was blocking Nika's layup). It has nothing to do with nika defense or her offense. The other part of that difference you point out is that Geno doesn't know how to sub.

Call Geno and tell him. I don't tell others how to do their job and never let others tell me for two reasons. Second guessers are always right because they never have to make a decision.
There's probably a team near you that could use a coach.

Good win for Notre dame. The analysis on UConn has to be that they are overrated.
I do think Aubrey could have made a difference here. Similar to the way she did against Louisville. But she’s not coming back, this is the team.
Paige being outplayed by guards is part of the formula for defeat for UConn this season. It has happened all 4 times.
UConn isn't "overrated". They have four players (four) who are injured and out for the season. They are "understaffed" and obviously not at their best. Any team would be in that situation.
Look over @ND's bench. You'll see just as many injured players. Three are starters. Stop blaming the bench for Geno's coaching decisions.
Voters said this was the #8 team in the country even with those injuries. Clearly they are not.

This is because of fans and media. They are not as good as their ranking but every time they blow out a garbage team everyone thinks they are a top 5 level team and Paige is the best player in the game although she has yet to put up numbers reflecting her greatness against top opposing guards.

@@QazPlm10 The game is so different now. When Stewie was winning no one was on her level. Now there are players that can go one on one against Paige, Clark, AR and whoever else. VT’s ranking may not show it but they are not afraid of anyone. Georgia Amoore will shoot with the best of them. The thing is with everybody ballin out this year nothing is guaranteed and anyone can be beat by anyone. If what Auburn did to LSU doesn’t wake you up. I don’t know what will.

Stop saying Uconn is a top 5 or 10 team. Love Uconn I do, but like I said, the recent streak was against mediocre teams.
Uconn has a bright future. Freshmans are promising. We need to get healthy next year and remain that way.
This team is not a final 4 caliber team.
Nevertheless, it's good to root and toot and see what the ending was bring. Nice to see the process of the freshmans.
tbh Uconn is strong as a team, but seperately just mediocre. They are not physically stronger or taller on average. All those stronger team got more than one reliable shooters, but Uconn just so weak on shooting. Like Muhl, PB said she underrated because she just great as a team player. She got great game sense, great passes, sometimes even wider view than PB, but she is not a reliable shooter and she knows that. Edwards is fine playing aginst those that are smaller and non-aggressive, but when play aginst those at the same height, shes just weak. To me KK and shade got some highlights each game but there are just some many player that are better than them. You can always find a player thats more aggressive than KK or shoots better than Shade in a game when Uconn is losing. Even including PB, non of them can stand out as a stable and reliable shooter in a tough game, at least for now. No shots no points. They could be the best team if everyone just improve a bit on shooting and be more agressive.
I think Megan Rapinoe's presence was the reason for the loss.

Hidalgo play the great game yesterday but Gino should have had the answer to shut her down whether it was double-teaming or traps or whatever they should have taken her out of the game and said they let her run free and score 35 points that was the difference in the game
Hidalgo dropped 31 against SC. You need a guard like Rori Harmon(hurt) to contain her.
If they would have kept feeding Edwards from posting up or pick and roll with Paige they would have won.
