I feel like I find better content from creators like him versus popular TH-camrs who I rarely watch anymore as they are starting to feel very formulaic. Or like in the case with Pewdiepie, it is impossible to tell what a video will be about because the title tells you little to nothing about the video. So, I don't even bother watching it.

@@ajflink I strongly gravitate to smaller youtuber as well. Some stay great when they grow big but often they become as you said: Formulaic.
I understand why, you have to follow the rules of the algorithm and it is very likely your job and you gotta appease your patrons and sponsors.
But I am not a fan.

13:25 the shade mechanic in Hollow Knight is also bad because one of the major aspects of metroidvanias is exploration; visiting and re-visiting different places to find a new path. If you die after you've reached a dead-end, either by purpose or from running out of resources, the game now forces you to go back to that dead-end for basically no reason. For the shade to work it would have to do something crazy that drives the game forwards, like spawning in a random location or something,. This of course doesn't seem very coherent and I would much prefer for it to not exist at all.

    • @invasor-x
      @invasor-x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nah I think its works well enough
The shade gives you a reason to revisit the place where you died, wich is usually a dangerous place, in metroidvanias with no corpse run mechanics you dont really have a reason to go back to those places
Besides, movement in hollow knight is fast so fighting your shade doesnt takes too long

Alright, here's what i think are the key steps to make a death be not frustrating:
1 - DON'T WASTE THE PLAYER'S TIME. Let the player try again and give them back the control over their character as soon as possible. Don't put a long death animation or slow game over screen that forces them to stare at the screen for several seconds without doing anything.
2 - DON'T WASTE THE PLAYER'S PROGRESS. It's infuriating when you lose 2-3 stages worth of progress or get sent to the other side of the map because of bad checkpoint/save station/whatever placement. Don't force the player to go the same task over and over again before attempting a difficult stage, area, boss, etc. A tough challenge should be tough because it's difficult, not punishing.
3 - DON'T TAKE THE PLAYER'S RESOURCES. Health, ammo, mana, tools, ores, etc. etc. etc. Just let them try again with what they have... Don't try anything crazy, just rewind back to their last save/checkpoint/etc.!
Of course, there are exceptions to this. Your game needs a certain degree of linearity for you to be able to do it. If the game's progression is more focused on player growth and resource management, then you can't really punish the player in any other way but take something they have away.
4 - Just be fair! If the death feels cheap, then it's frustrating. As simple as that.

If you enjoy the high difficulty/low punishment of speedrun games like Lovely Planet and Celeste, I think it is worth looking into Neon White and Hot Lava. Hey man great video!
Even after Elden Ring added ways to avoid frustrating the player after dying, I still think that Dark Souls benefits from that punishment.
On the surface level the main emotion that it provokes is anger or annoyance, but there are other aspects to it that may not be as apparent or significan at first.
There is a fun video about it called "Your Least Favorite Place in Gaming", and even though it isn't about the same topic as your vid, I think there are some interesting takeaways from both

I say it is only frustrating if:
    1) You can see it coming or know the signs before it happens.
    2) You cannot rationalize what you did wrong.
    3) It seemed to happen randomly.
    4) It feels unnecessarily tedious.
    5) You feel heavily discourage from doing anything potentially and significantly risky.
    6) It feels like something is hard for the sake of being hard instead of an actual challenge.
    7) You get mocked for asking for tips and/or advise about how to beat some part of a game.

  • @Marqan
    @Marqan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hades is definitely my favourite game to die in! In my 110 hours I think I had 2-3 occasions when I was salty about it. Every other time it just felt like progress. There was story-telling involved, I gathered resources, I had time to notice why and how I died, and I could rethink my build for the next run. Then later on you can fine-tune the difficulty as well. It was perfect!
On the topic of dying I think RPGs are really behind, where you just reload a game and that's it. Alternatively you can do ironman mode, but a proper RPG playthrough is easily 10s of hours, so backtrecking is not an option for most people, even if they'd otherwise enjoy a more hardcore experience.
Two of the biggest offenders that come to mind are Fallout: New Vegas and Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which already include scenes implying the main character died or almost died, so they know that it's interesting to include that type of thing. Then why not incorporate death into your game as a feature? Just reloading is a nice option to have, but it's just boring.

A cool death mechanic would be, to have the player respawn when he dies, but also to change the level or the Npc positions by a bit, so there is diversity between the attempts.

Humans are built the way that when we are staying in some sort of environment long enough we get used to it, set the standards. Who would be happier, poor getting additional 100$ or rich getting additional 1000$? Same in the video games. Failing in games is a counterweight to winning. It sets our standards, lowers our expectations so smaller achievements would feel bigger.
Being challenging is a core for fun in the most games.

Noita has the best Death mechanic: (almost)every single death is completely your fault and could've been prevented if you weren't playing like an idiot,
BUT, not playing like an idiot isn't fun.
why wouldn't I put a double + Omega + wand Refresh + end of everything on a wand and lag my entire computer out for 10 whole minutes after my death?
Death are hilarious and stupid, and it's part of the allure of the game.
you try to swim in acid, polymorphed into a sheep(permanently) or shot by a nuke - each of those are just absurd beyond reason but I have experienced them all and laughed at how I could've avoided it by just being less stupid(I shot the Nuke myself, with glass cannon).

Death in a game like *Risk of Rain 2* feels terrible, because it's the type of rogue-like that has way too much of a different pace between early run and late run. The first fifteen to thirty minutes of any given run (depending on luck) feel boring and slow, to the point where I wish there was an option to just start a run at a midway point with random pick-ups already in the inventory.

One of the worst failiure mechanics I've seen is in Psychonauts 2.
This is for one reason, and one reason only.
If I die, I have to reload the entire scene.
    Every.
    Single.
    Time.
    The reason it sucks?
The loading screens, at least on PS4 and Xbox One, are so long; like, 15 seconds long!
Don't get me wrong, I understand why: it's probably because the developers didn't want to risk a lot of bugs when trying to reset the scene, or because of RAM limits on older devices.
    But still!
At least _try_ to reduce loading screens!
Especially since those were the target platforms, as in the ones the game were meant for.
So, if you want Psychonauts 2, get it on a next-gen system or an ultra-quick hard drive.
I promise you, the experience will be so much better.

It's only bad if you die constantly or lose good chunk of progression due to death. That's why i don't play CoD/Battlefield, it annoys the shit out of me, not to mention 9/10 times you shoot first and you die first because of garbage netcode. Souls games can have similar things, but it's usually depends what game and how long the gap is between going from a to b without save point.
