I remember in Vietnam there's a saying "go 3 steps and you'll meet a hero", people now usually use this to praise ones who do good things like rescue someone, I was actually surprised to see this saying again on social media used like that because 20 years ago, my dad told me it's because almost all elders were in the war, sacrificed their youth to free this nation, they're all heroes, that's why there are so many heroes you can meet in daily life. Both meanings are correct and that's how my father and many strangers taught me how to become a better person for our nation.
As always, thank you Luna for spreading these touching stories to friends all over the world! You too are a hero!

This made me cry. I'm an American and it absolutely breaks my heart hearing stories from Vietnamese and American veterans. If America had any moral backbone we would have supported Vietnamese independence in 1945, but instead we sided with colonialism and imperialism. I hope that one day my country will acknowledge how wrong we were, but until then it's my goal to educate others about our crimes in Vietnam. Videos like these help show Americans the human side of the Vietnamese, as our media only depicts the Vietnamese as heartless savages. At the end of the day we're more alike than different.

President Ho Chi Minh also once told us that "the American people are not the American imperialists". Therefore, the Vietnamese people do not hate the American people. Even those who once pointed a gun at us, if they come back with a sincere heart… we will always welcome them. The richest Vietnamese people are love

I too wish to reflect this sentiment. My grandfather war a Lt.Col in the US Army during the war on my fathers side, and on my mothers side all of her uncles served in some way or another. My family is guilty of perpetuating bloodshed and for that I truly am sorry. Vietnam and her people are wonderful and I look forward to visiting someday soon. Thank you for making the video Luna.

@@hoangnga290 even then US American people didn't want war. We still don't but we've been causing harm all over the globe ever since. Until we have the guts to rise up and put a stop to it all, we hardly deserve the mercy we're shown by our victims. We won't end our government's senseless killing until we revolutionize, but we don't care as long as the killing isn't on US soil. Well, now we're going homeless and starving because our country doesn't care about us during the worst pandemic in decades, which has killed well over a million of us, maybe now that it affects OURSELVES we'll be willing to fight for change.

@@willlevinstein1446 You say the the south was a puppet of america. Because america supported the republic of Vietnam. By that logic the north was a puppet of the Soviet Union and China since the relationship was nearly identical. You say that the southern government was widely unpopular. An unpopular government does not mean the people were ready to abandon the republic in favor of the communist. Quite the opposite. In 1954-55 over 1 million refugees fled south to escape the communist regime while only 250 thousand went north. You also never hear of the atrocities communited by the communists on a daily basis. Upwards of 100,000 were killed in north Vietnam ho chi min and his cadre. That sort of thing continued in the south during and after the war. You probably have never heard of the communist reeducation camps either?

I find that even atheist/skeptic types who tend to listen to or research into truth more easily, don't have the clearest idea of what Vietnam has gone through (mostly this is the result of imperialist/liberal propaganda which demonizes the People's cause...but some have difficulties because they have relationships with Vietnamese whose family were owning class or otherwise counter-revolutionary, and who had to flee at a young age... so they have all these horror stories to tell about "what communism is really like" that have zero context to speak of, and no understanding of the results that were achieved by the People after the struggle).

These stories of beloved family members that died, and, the energetic efforts by the families and Vietnam authorities to find their martyrs and bring them to a dignified and final resting place is both uplifting and emotional to watch. The people interviewed in this video remind us again of how many lives are ruined by wars, how families are devastated, and how the trauma can last over generations.

Actually my grandfather and many of his neighbors are former VC. The US and Diệm government only concentrated the wealth in mega cites like Đà Nẵng and Sài Gòn. Those from the countryside not only suffered from poverty but also from Diệm's "Giết nhầm còn hơn bỏ sót" policy , basically indiscriminate killing of any suspected civilians, that didn't go well with the peasant class and helped buff support for VC significantly . Many VC soldiers had the same motivation as my grandfather ,they all lost relatives, cattles, houses (basically everything that important for a peasant) due to Diệm 's indiscriminate killing policy or simply they don't like be told what to do by another white guy from god know where after the French was kicked out.

I don't think China is the boogieman that people are claiming they are. Vietnam does have a complicated history with China, and I don't doubt that the Vietnamese still harbour lots of resentment towards them. I doubt that any informed Vietnamese person thinks that China is a bigger threat to world peace than the US is. Just look at how many bombs China has dropped on foreign soil or even shots fired from small arms compared to the US in the last 200 years. It's no contest. The US is a bully today, as they were back during the American War in Vietnam.

5:50 That belt is either a LINCLOE M-1972 belt or an LC-1 ALICE belt, neither pieces of equipment saw use in Vietnam prior to the withdrawal of US forces as agreed by the Paris Peace Accords. It’s impossible for it to have been captured during that time, as they were still being developed and tested by Natick Army Labs.

Fascinating! To hear the stories of those on the Vietnamese side is something we in the West never really get to experience - as you said it gets buried in the "official histories" written by the US. (Even though they lost, fighting a people whose country they had invaded...! What did they think would happen?) Thank you for posting this.

I'm coming back much later after first watching this, but I have to say - this really made me tear up hard multiple times. Part of why I haven't finished it yet. At least their sacrifice wasn't in vain, though - decades of hard fighting against the Japanese, French, and US imperialists, and their collaborators, and the Vietnamese people succeeded against all odds.
And in response to the description - yeah, that needs to change. That's not acceptable. Having the US "perspective" (read: often lies and distortions) be so dominant is almost like having the Nazi version of WWII be dominant. I say this as an "American;" there was absolutely no justification for the West to do what they did to Vietnam. Of course, I think we all agree with that already here, heh, but still.
Edit: Yep, happened again, had to grab a tissue, haha. But I finished. Great video

American government has caused more pain and suffering. The mental stress PTSD, has to be off the charts, think if another country came into the United states and did exactly what we did in Nam, I would like to think the entire nation would rise to the occasion to get rid the the invaders. It all comes down to our Government, I understand our soldiers answered the call, but they were lied too and betrayed by their Government and fellow citizens.

The Vietnamese are wonderful people. I have made many friends over there the past few years. I love them. They wrote an article about me in the NhanDan paper in April 2023. I have a lot of respect and admiration for them. I'll be visiting in near future and can't wait to go. I'm friends with some in this video. Thank you fir posting this. I was invited to be in a documentary over there in Hanoi but my dad was very sick so I couldn't go.

These survivors of genocidal imperialist U.S. war remind me of the grandpas and grandmas that would share their stories and trauma with us every May when I still lived in Russia 🤧

There’s virtually no English translations of interviews from the Vietnamese side. Heck, we have more interviews from Germans and Japanese from WWII than we do of Vietnamese. This is very valuable for Westerners.

There's a beauty in the veterans from both sides working together to help each other find peace with the horrors they had to be victim and party to. I think most wars leave young people emotionally devastated but this one seems to have left a particularly horrible mark on the vets. Have Vietnamese vets struggled with mental health in the same way US vets of the war have or is it viewed more like how the US views WWII (vets seems more positive in general because it was a "good" or "righteous" war in the American zeitgeist)? I've seen repeated accounts from the Ukraine-Russia war about how psychologically damaging consistent artillery strikes can be. I cannot fathom how horrifying it must have been to be hit by a decade of B52 bombing campaigns.

There is many famous movies about Vetnam War, but they are all US movies, shows it form only one point of view, so they are obviously not objective. I wonder if there is any Vietnamese movie about it, hopefully with subtitles. If You know any please answer this comment.
