Handong was always fun even before she went to China for a while, but ever since she came back, she's been way more confident and hyperactive, and it's been GREAT. Insomnicsy has a few subtitled videos of some of their recent V lives that the whole group is in, you'll see what I mean if you check them out later. She looked and sounded fantastic during their last online concert, too, so I'm super looking forward to seeing her in the next comeback.
Yep, Handong did not participate in the promotion from "Scream" to "Boca" (so it also includes "Black or White", "Red Sun", "Sahara", "Dear", "Break the Wall" and "RoSE Blue" BUT ALSO their two Japanese releases "Endless Night" and "No More"... 😰). So sad as "Scream" is also part of their very first full album... That's why many new InSomnias don't know her well yet but we can count on many Somnies who provide content to know her more (like insomnicsy). In addition, she almost had zero screen time in the survival show... 🤬 Fortunately she is back more confident than ever and there were many concerts during this last quarter of the year. Handong left for China in late October 2019 and returned in early October 2020. Her original plan, pre-COVID, was to take part in an idol competition show called Youth With You 2, in which over 100 contestants would compete for the opportunity to debut as one of nine spots in a group called THE9, that would be something akin to the Chinese version of IZ*ONE or I.O.I.. THE9 is planned to run for at least 18-24 months, and has been very successful post-debut, selling over 150,000 copies of their debut single "SphinX". Had Handong made it into the winning nine members of THE9, that would have almost certainly been the end of her involvement in Dreamcatcher. Although some have said that she took part in the competition to boost Dreamcatcher in China, this isn't really the case, as those contestants who were already members of Korean groups, like Handong, and Aurora from Nature, weren't allowed to push their 'home groups" by name and only could allude to the fact that they had experience performing. BLACKPINK's Lisa, during an appearance as a coach on Youth With You 2, referenced that when she asked Handong "Have we met before?" The reason why Handong was willing to risk her spot in Dreamcatcher for a shot at a place in THE9 is really due to the fact that in general, foreign idols aren't really treated especially well in Korea. They don't get the same level of coverage in the media, they don't get the same opportunities for side projects like acting or OST recordings, and after their contracts end they are usually unable to remain in Korea and have to go back to their home countries, where they may very well be unknown. It doesn't matter that Dreamcatcher Company has treated Handong herself well, just she knew that approaching her mid-20s, without any base of personal popularity in her home country, her long term prospects weren't good. She could see a future in which Siyeon and Yoohyeon would be recording OSTs, SuA would be choreographing the next generation of idols, Dami writing and producing songs, JiU in top management at their company, etc., while she might be stuck as a flight attendant in China. For Handong, Youth With You 2 was a real chance to become a star in her home country. Unfortunately - or fortunately, depending upon your perspective - Handong was eliminated from Youth With You 2 after the second round. Because of the delays and quarantines related to COVID, she had to remain in Wuhan over the summer, and picked up several jobs while she was there, including her own self-written solo debut single. It wasn't a slam dunk that she would return, even then, as she doesn't now have the possibility of flying to China during downtime to visit friends and family (and her cat) - as quarantine periods make short visits impossible. Handong was very concerned that maybe after a year away, and her willingness to potentially leave the group, that there would be bad blood or at least some distance between her and the other members. But she has said on vLive that she has just been showered with love since her return and she has never felt more a part of the Dreamcatcher family. Gahyeon is her roommate and her best friend, and she was the first person she saw in the dorm when she returned - I think it took several hours for Gahyeon to let her hug go... ;)
Joined the show to become huge in China/potentially leave the group? Even if she made the final lineup insomnias would have supported her regardless and I strongly believe she would have returned. She joined Youth With You 2 to build confidence, she said felt she was lacking in skills I'm not sure why you think she would have left the group. Bad blood between members? She definitely said she was worried it would be awkward since it's been a year but she said when she reunited with everyone it felt like yesterday as if she never left. Handong! Dongie!! I am sad that I got into them when Handong was gone, but I am blessed to be an Insomnia and I love our ice princess Soo much. When you listen to the songs from the first 2 Dystopia albums without Handong then listen to the OT7 versions, you realize how much you miss her and her vocals because she makes songs that are already really good even better. There is a vlog that Handong did during her return to South Korea from China during her quarantine. There are also her own reactions to Rose BLUE and Boca. Handong is one of the few in KPop that can pull off orange hair. Gahyeon and Handong are roommates in the dorm. SuA and Yoohyeon are also roommates. JiU, Siyeon and Dami use to be roommates, but Dami recently got her own solo room in the dorm; JiU and Siyeon are still roommates.
