Your number 2 is my biggest pet peeve in comics. I hate it when I can see the big reveal RIGHT THERE on the next page. It happens way more often then you'd think.

My friend let me borrow Eiken (that was before i knew what it really was. Still like the story, though. Lol), and I do see see that problem a few times in the series. It really takes away the surprise element like Mark described it would.

I think videos like this are more valuable than you can imagine, because quite often, people don't understand that in making sequential art, just knowing how to draw isn't as important as knowing how to tell a story through pictures.....and laying out a page is key to getting the most out of your visual story. The part about page turn reveals is a great example.
    Thanks for this vid!

possible 11? I've read comics where the layout was planned deliberately to match the pacing of the story. when everything was meant to be relaxed and slow paced the pages were full of small, neat box panels. but when it came to an action scene the panels were more varied and organic in shape and would suddenly be taking up a quarter or even half the page so that it took less time to read the whole page. I physically read it faster and subconsciously it felt much faster as well.

Hey Mark, this actually popped into my head a little while after this video but I'm only taking until now to ask you this. xD Do you have a preferred method on the duration of your panels? Sometimes I feel as though when I do rough outlines for a panel, I feel like I'm going too slow but if I take out those details, it seems like things happen too fast and I think readers won't get all of what they should out of that scene. Have any pro tips?

  • @Aendhal
    @Aendhal 11 ปีที่แล้ว

I think this lesson is great. I think that a lot of artists who have an interest in creating a comic/manga/graphic novel forget that the main point is to tell a story. Showcasing your ability to drop in some bombshell artwork is of course going to sell your first book but great story telling methods like these are what will make most readers pick up the second. There's got to be a balance between the awesome art and the fluidity of the story telling imo. Thanks for another great vid Mr.Crilley.

  • @crystalkita

So these videos are fantastic, they help explain many things that I myself still don't understand how to execute properly. Here is the thing. The BIGGEST, MOST DISHEARTENING part about comics, is that I don't understand how to do a script for one!
I have this great idea, I have images in my head both cool and mundane moments that would look epic on a page. The kicker is that when I go "yeah! I want to turn that into a comic!"......I sit in front of a blank outline page for HOURS. Staring at it. Getting no where.
Do you think you could do a video about how you go about turning an idea INTO a script?
If I can pass this hurdle, I might just be able to actually MAKE a comic for a change, instead of doing two pages and then giving up.

This kind of videos are very insightful and it makes one think about thoughts that went into the process of making while at the same time, allows you to look at the real result of that thought; it really connects the idea with the execution! Process vids like drawing vids sometimes disconnect that sort of comprehension because we're also looking at the step by step.
Thank you for doing these vids, it's making me think and realize more things!

I cannot speak for anyone else, however, I find this video very usefull (after all, making manga isn't only about the drawings, but also about conveying a feeling through the organization of your drawings) and I'm very happy that you made it. Thank you ^^

    Mark,
I subscribed to your channel because you are unique in being very talented but not being arrogant, and freely share what you have learned about drawing throughout your life and then pass that on to aspiring artists, illustrators, etc.
Whether it's been a "how to draw" manga or realism video, your "A Day in the Life" video, or a "page layout" video, I've been inspired and touched by each one. So don't fret about it! Please do whatever you think will help people out. :)

If you are here to teach how to draw, mark, then these are just as important as doing the line art and shading/coloring. If people are serious about being fans of yours, you shouldn't worry. I will always spread good word about your work.

    This video was EXCELLENT!
I love that you mix it up. Learning the logistical side to things helps us to develop the RANGE of knowledge and skills necessary to produce something--this video was sort of like the director's commentary on a DVD (which I sometimes enjoy more than the regular version).
If any of your subscribers are thinking of pursuing a life as a professional artist (rather than as a hobby, and drawing for their own pleasure), they probably found this useful.

I must say that this was actually more helpful for me personally than most of your recent videos have been. Since I'd say I'm more of an intermediate level artist (starting my own comic) and need more help with over all concepts than step by step tutorials on drawing specifics. Very interesting stuff Crilley! Hope to see more like this! :D

Personally Mark, I believe us, your subscribers, appreciate this kind of video since a lot of us are aspiring comic book artists, manga-ka, writers and so on. I know its not all of us, but I'd say a vast amount. To be a good comic artist or something of that nature, you can't just draw good, these tips are very important too so I'd welcome these videos more often.

Please do more of these videos! The "how to draw" videos are great, but if the reader can't follow the story it won't matter how beautiful the drawings are. I would love to hear more about your storytelling methods, even if you did some about the writing stage, like plot creation and creating strong characters.
Anyways, I love your stuff Mark! Keep it coming :D
