This not as hard as it seems just make sure you dont turn any of the three components by them selves. i have a 99 Mercedes Benz W 140 S420 the key fob got stuck in the ignition tumbler .1St position is how it comes apart . you need 2 tools that specific to your car a tumbler remover, ignition lock tool. dont be fooled the whole column has to come down
My son has a 2000 Mercedes S500 V-8. A so called mechanic told him it would cost $2000 to fix it. He said that there is no power to the ignition switch.Can't he trace the power source? It could be just a fuse or a relay or, even a bad ignition switch!? I wish I knew 1/2 as much as you do. Awesome video. Thanks a lot.

I have an important question please I have 1997 S320 w140 it had a electrical shortage and burned the switch , do I need the new key with the switch or can I just change the internal components
Can you get a replacement from the junkyard? Or just go for new pieces all put together? I have 94 Coupe, I get stranded randomly. When I turn the key, I get the SRS light to come on, but it won't turn the dash on, on position 2 to start the car. If I try to turn the key off and on for 100 times, 1 time it would work and turn the car on, then no issues again for a while. Replaced tons of relays and switches, neutral switch, everything, I'm lead to believe this is the only part that it could be. They key isn't getting stuck, simply some sort of electronic issue.
MisterDrB I would never use any used parts especially electrical ones that are notorious for being bad I cannot promise this will fix your issues either these cars tend to have some tricky electrical issues
In my W140 the 'wire' that needs to be pushed in towards the lock cylinder goes in at the back, AFAIK, not through the front as in W124 or as claimed (but not shown!?) in this video. Have you checked this against the WIS data? What year W140 is this?
you should have asked him first before for the year and model the video is for. there are so many years and models on w140 chassis. this video shows the components outside the car with basic information. even a mechanic can still screw up too just like the guy below done it himself and now he can't do it simple way but to force/break the whole ignition system to remove. $600 won't make it out the shop now, try $1000+ and more parts. good video but hurts more people than helping. so thumb down... good andy man, i feel your pain.....

vacbmw How to remove the lock assembly bolt? Do you push it out? Drill? twist? cut??
Question, can I just remove the tumbler and switch without removing the steering wheel lock? looks like it might be possible.

Is a symptom of a bad ignition switch the dash lights remaining on and the warning "Don't forget key" when the key has been removed?
