I can't fully feel the directors intentions when I watch this movie. My sadness is because that I do not know any poets or artists or people who think and feel deeply.

i think it's about how rich people try to save poor/needy people from the misery, ignoring the fact they don't wanna be saved

The whole movie, Nostalghia, is about cultural barriers and the experiences and customs we grow up with at home that stick with us. It's about nostalgia for a place where you might have not been exactly happy or fulfilled, but where you spent a lot of time, especially formative years, with people that matter or mattered to you; nostalgia about home, even a broken home, for better or worse.
This allegory exemplifies this best, the man in the hole, although living in abject misery, does not want to be "saved" from the hole, as he had grown so accustomed to it that the act of "saving" would remove him from the very place where he had formed most of and his most treasured memories and experiences. Regardless of the quality of life there, home is home, and you're always going to get attached to it and miss it after leaving it.
It's funny that you guys are asking this in here, I assume you're not from eastern europe. :) I may be wrong but I believe Tarkovsky said that he does not expect westerns to get this, exactly because their "homes" are not "slimy ponds", the memories they have of childhood and home are not clouded in misery and poverty. I find it very amusing that at least in your case, this seems to be exactly what's happening. :) It's not about rich vs poor, it's about culture. The first time I saw this scene I laughed out the loud the moment the punchline came, it's just something you feel and understand immediately if you've lived on this side of the continent.

@@AzAz-ru9qr I think we here in latin america can have some grasp of what you are talking about. It's not like we brazilians (in my case) do not like to spend some time outside of our country (there are a lot of us in the USA, Europe and Asia), but, when it comes to immigrating, most of us wouldn't make that choice even under 25 years of dictatorship.
That being said, I also interpreted that scene in relation to the ending of the movie "Stalker", where the protagonist concludes that "people do not want to be saved", and in relation to a previous comment made in this same scene in Nostalghia where the protagonist says that "here and in Russia it's all the same"; it seems to me that he understood that wherever he goes he'll carry his loneliness with him, there's no "higher place" you can put people into and it's impossible to save anyone. You would do best letting things in their places, it seems.
That's why I'm not sure about some people's interpretation of this movie like it's professing that we should have open borders so that we could connect with other people more easily, because it seems to me that from the start the protagonist is already a lot skeptical about this ideal (when he says that poetry cannot be translated).
