Break out the cable ties 🫣 Good luck, and you may get lower temps also. Interestingly, the best way I found to lower temps was to repad the cooler. Some cards, even of the same model ran at different temps and changing the pads could make a huge difference on the worst offenders.
All the fans should normally be spinning, though it may be possible for software to address headers (the physical plugs on the PCB) differently on some models. Assuming you bought a MSI Ventus 3X, the middle fan is on the same header as the left fan as you look at it with the PCIe connector down, so it will receive the same power. The only reason it would be spinning at a different speed (or not spinning at all), is if the fan is failed/damaged, the cable is damaged, or the fan is obstructed in some way. Check to make sure it turns without a problem, and if so, it probably needs replacing. Good luck!

I had bought Ventus fans on AliExpress but as you saw, it wasn't a good experience and returning them was a pain. EBay offers a return policy which means you can get your money back if the fans don't fit well, or there is some other issue. And as i suggest, check with the seller on the actual dimensions to ensure they are the correct size and model before ordering. Good luck!

But use your judgement as without knowing the state of the card, I can’t say for sure what is needed, and if you are not confident on what you are doing, it’s best to leave to someone who is. Yes, this is completely true and its way easier to clear muck out of the heatsink with the fans and shroud removed. Thanks. I just discovered my MSI 4070 Ti Super 2 Fan Ventus has failed fans. This should help me replace them. I have a white and a black SKU and the one still working is starting to be noisy. These are some cheap fans MSI put in.
The Ventus models have the smallest (diameter and depth) of the options in the MSI range, because its the lower end card. And there will be a few problems changing the fans, first larger wouldn't fit in the shroud, second the retainer screws are in very specific places in the heatsink and third, just the cabling would need to match to the headers and would need the correct electrical specs. You could probably jerry-rig something with cable ties and by splicing the cables, but would need to be careful of the power draw as the card will be wired to provide the same ampage as the stock fans use. But this wouldn't be very neat, and comes with risks of course of damage and warranty invalidation. But actually, depending on your card (if its a DDR6X model such as 3070Ti, 3080, 3080Ti or 3090) my experience was that the fan noise was more likely to be due to poor heat transfer from the GPU die and the memory modules into the heatsink. I replaced the memory thermal pads on some 3070Ti's and 3080's and the cards got a lot quieter. If the heat isn't being transferred efficiently into the heatsink, the fans will be less effective in reducing the temps of the dies. So if you want to reduce the noise, that may be a better place to start. But I don't have a video showing this, and its less trivial to do than the fan change.
@@sometechguy Right, of course should check if temps are ok even though a new card and MSI afterburner has a fan curve adjustment, played with that too bit. Thought even maybe I don't get enough air into the case and I can't set case fans to work on GPU temps so thought using adapter. Weirdly Ventus has only 2 ports, 0 extras, meanwhile my old gigabyte 2070 super had multiple, not sure if the ports actually worked, but still had them.
@@sometechguy In got a 3060 ventus 2x and out of the box one of the VRAM thermal pads was lifted up not touching. The noise levels are ok for my usage but for 99% load you'll hear the fans quite clearly. It's about as loud as my Wii U actually

I have not taken apart a 2 fan variant, but the shroud and the fans are very similar so I would expect its very similar. And in fact, I am yet to find a recent card that requires touching the backplate to change the fans, the fans are typically mounted in either the front, or occasionally the rear of the shroud, and that removing the shroud is often needed just to get to the cables as they route to the headers. TL:DR - Yes, I would expect so. Good luck with it!
The one in the video is a 3070 (non Ti). The Ti has a full length metal back plate as it has GDDR6X memory that runs hotter and need additional cooling on the back. However, the process is exactly the same for all these cards. As for the fans, the best place I think is Ebay, but will depend where you are located and if this is an option. I boiught some fans from AliExpress and had to send them back as they were not the correct size. So check the dimensions with the seller, and also ask specifically if they are original units. If they turn out not to be, and they don't fit well, you can then use Ebay protection to return them. I may make a video on my experiences of buying from AliExpress, as there is a lot of choice there but the quality varies greatly.
You are right that 'most' would not experience a fan failure, especially if they dispose of the card quickly. But an estimated 20million Turing and Ampere cards have been sold, so even if a small percentage have a failure, it can easily be many 10's of thousands of failures each year. Given proper treatment and handling, mechanical moving parts are also the most likely part to fail and dust ingress can add to that. Also, sometimes fans fail just for purely mechanical reasons, like a PCIE cable getting into the fan. Also, when someone sells a card, someone else buys it. So most of these GPUs will be in service for many years. There are still people upgrading their GTX 1080's. And of course, some people just watch videos like this because they like to see stuff disassembled! If you didn't have a fan failure, I hope the video was at least interesting. :-)
@@sweaty6253 Do you know why gpu fans fail so often? Many times they are not using quality ball-bearing fans. And if the fans are facing the ground, like in most tower cases, the cheap fan bearing will fail even faster!
The fans don't run all the time, so its possible that the card just didn't get hot enough to start them. You can try using MSI Afterburner to set the fan speed manually to test it. I think its less common that all fans fail at the same time, unless there is some other problem with the card. Good luck, but I would make sure you test the fans before replacing.
My MSI fans are buzzing so I am going to take the chassis off and put a space Noctua on there.

Hey i bought an RTX 3060 12GB about a week ago and the middle fan is not spinning (3X fans) is that normal? I can't seem to find an answer online 😕
