Also good job in beating the final boss of the chapter. That one was tough eventho part of it was nerfing yourself using the wrong weapon lol. Hi
The Bull Demon King getting decapitated in the animation scene can be confusing because they never really explain that he is actually as immortal as Wukong. In the original novel, BDK was beheaded multiple times by Nezha before he submitted. Wukong and Bajie are shown to be antagonistic in this scene because it's from the BDK's perspective, in actual fact the BDK was being a stubborn bitch refusing to lend his once sworn brother his treasured Plaintan Fan (Wukong even promised to return the fan once he's done) which is needed to put out the fires on the Flaming Mountain for Wukong's party to continue on their Journey to the West.
Another thing fun fact is that the Keeper of the Flaming Mountain, the "adulterer chasing after Princess Iron Fan", joined Bajie in subduing BDK's concubine in another mountain. After Princess Iron Fan refused to lend Wukong the fan, Wukong asked the Keeper where BDK was, and went to find BDK in another mountain. After a big hooha, Bajie and the Keeper came as reinforcements and they fought with BDK's concubine and her forces while WK and BDK had an epic Kaijuu fight. I don't remember Bajie killing the mother fox guai in the original story but I guess it does make sense in the game's lore since he did fight her in the original novel.
The court forced Rakshasi to birth red boy both as punishment to the Bull King and to hold political leverage over the Buddas. The celestial court is almost entirely made of Daoist deities. In BMW's lore, Yakshas are driven to extintion by Mount Lingshan, who are Buddhists deities. Having red boy alive gives the court a weapon to use against the Buddas if it comes to that.
almost needs a dedicated lore dive after the end
Thanks for the almost endurance stream Congrats on clearing chapter 5. It was a really short chapter, but it had interesting bosses. You did great beating Red Boy and the lore discussion at the end was nice. Can’t wait to see what happens in Ch 6
Thanks for the Stream Reimu, ima do the lore dump under this comment when i wake up, most of the lore we talked about I already posted in some of the previous lore dumps but ima just repost here so its easier to find, though if you or anyone are interested, the lore dumps in the past streams also cover how people become gods in the heavenly court as well as some other cultural practies from ancient china like why monks are bald etc. they are mainly to introduce the topic but are a fun read when you or the phantomos are bored. last but not lest, love u Reimu
The most important thing to clarify is that religion in china is complicated, First and most important is that for daoism, it is actually seperated into two parts, the Daoist philosophical school of thought(道家), then the daoist religion (道教)outside of the different sects in both the school of thought and the religion, There will be different folklores, myth and legends that draw from the three main schools of thought(Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism)(The schools of thought can be traced back to the spring & autumn period where there were a hundred schools of thought) and the two religion ( Taoism and Buddism), ultimately as technology and people spread and progress, the stories and beliefs end up merging becoming what we know today. Thus even amongst chinese there are confusion and problem separating what they have learned so most of my lore will be based on 'Chinese Folk daoist religion' which mostly covers the more popular and widely heard versions of the stories though i will mention some of the discrepancies between religion as well as novel contents, and also touch upon some of their origins and changes throughout the different times in Chinese history. An important thing to note is that religion wise, most 'folk religion' practitioners, believers and worshippers are usually of Southern Chinese Descent, namely the Canton & Fujian Region and as most of the early chinese immigrants were from these two regions, most overseas chinese would also also mainly practise as such and be familiar with the versions passed down from there, the immigrants would mainly go from the mainland to SEA Region, Taiwan and America. This is why when visiting their temples, you would often see that the temples have the statues of both daoist and buddhist deities and the temple keepers believe in both and are usually not as strict as the monks from both religions.
So the first topic would be the chinese version of hell and how afterlife and funerals work. while there are differences between regions, the ones I know of are that of cantonese buddhist style, Teochew Daoist style and Hokkien Folk Daoist style though the one I was in is different as the deceased was a spiritual medium. The ded body will more than likely be sent to a mortician who would do the necessary preparations for the body before sending the body the the funeral hall, while simplified, most funerals last up to 7 days so that relatives and friends can visit and send the deceased off, during this time, the immediate family at this time would wear funeral clothes(usually white shirt with black pants nowadays) with a pin that holds different straw pieces and fabric that represent the wearers relation to the deceased. The Immediate family will usually have atleast 1 member stay awake through the night to take care that nothing supernatural or otherwise happen to the body, one common one is the belief is that if a pregnant, black cat jumps over a casket, it will pass on one of its 9 lives to the deceased and “awaken” his soul - preventing them from departing peacefully. though this might be more a regional belief. It is also said that on the 7th day after the passing, the deceased will return to tell their living family what are some of thier unfinished business and last words before going through the afterlife process.
When somebody passes, they will be usually be escorted by the black and white impermanance to hell, after passing the Spirit Gate, the soul travels along the so-called Yellow Springs Road (黄泉路 Huángquán lù)2, after which the deceased arrives before the city god (城隍神 Chénghuángshén), a local spirit in charge of protecting the town or village and its corresponding location in the world from the dead. This deity keeps the record of the good or bad deeds performed in life by the deceased, and presents the soul before the first of the Ten Magistrates.
These magistrates, also known as Ten Kings (Basically 10 judges, 1 for each of the 10 Judgement halls) of the Underworld, will be in charge of judging the actions of the deceased and applying the corresponding punishments. Virtually all souls are accountable to these courts. Only in exceptional cases of virtue is the deceased allowed to pass directly to the 'Pure Land of the West' of Amitabha Buddha (AMiTuoFuo 阿彌陀佛), or to Heaven ruled by the Jade Emperor. The soul that is judged will spend seven days in each of the first seven courts, yielding a total of forty-nine days.(The living will usually pray to a deity to help make the passing easier for the deceased, the deity should be 'Primordial(Can also refer to the 2nd of the heavenly stem or the Star) Salvation Heavenly Lord'(Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun,太乙救苦天尊), more commonly known as (Taiyi ZhenRen,太乙真人) who is said to be the master of Nezha.) The soul at this time will usually be escorted by 'Ox-head and Horse-Face' (牛頭 馬面 NiuTou MaMian) to the trials. The deceased shall be judged in the eighth court on the hundredth day after death; in the ninth court, after one year; and finally in the tenth court three years after death. Coinciding with these dates, the living descendants of the deceased must fulfill certain commemorative rites and make offerings for the purpose of alleviating the suffering of the dead.(During the 3 years period the living would do what is called "Filial Mourning", during this period they must refrain from any form of celebration, like parties, weddings, birthdays, etc. though most do not do it anymore or only for the first year or some variations where they only go for certain events. This is also because some believed the bad energy would spread to other people if they go during auspicious events.) The offerings would usually be of different joss paper money and also a house for the deceased to live in till his time in the underworld was up. Thgough there are more patterns nowadays with specialty shops selling paper cars, planes, iphones etc. for the dead. Gotta keep up with the timesReimuKusa Usually that is when the journey ends and they reincarnate.
For souls that died before their time was up, are considered "death in vain" or "wrongful death", It covers, deaths caused by murders, wars, suicides, accidents or natural disasters, etc. In the best case, when such death occurs due to a good deed of the deceased (a "great good", 大善 da shan), such as dying to save another person in danger, the soul can immediately ascend to Heaven. At the opposite extreme, that is, if one dies in vain due to one's evil deeds (a "great evil", 大惡 da e), as one could be sentenced to death for committing crimes, one goes straight to the 18 layers of hell.(Basically hell is called Earth Prison(diyu,地狱), another term that refers specifically to the 18 torture levels in chinese is ’十八层地狱‘(Shiba cheng Diyu) those that fail the judgement hall trials will also go to the 18 levels.
The respective levels are:
Hell of Tongue-ripping, where those who gossip and spread trouble with their words will repeatedly have their tongues ripped out.
Hell of Scissors, where those who destroy someone else’s marriage will have their fingers repeatedly cut off.
Hell of Trees of Knives, where those who sow discord amongst family members will be repeatedly hung from trees made of sharp knives.
Hell of Mirrors of Retribution, where those who have managed to escape punishment for their crimes while alive will be repeatedly shown their true horrific selves.
Hell of Steamers, where hypocrites and troublemakers will repeatedly be steamed “alive.”
Hell of Copper Pillars, where arsonists will be repeatedly chained to red-hot pillars of copper.
Hell of the Mountain of Knives, where those who have killed for pleasure or without good reason will repeatedly be made to climb a mountain made of sharp blades sticking out of it.
Hell of the Mountain of Ice, where adulterers, deceivers of elders, and schemers will be repeatedly left out on a barren mountain of ice to freeze.
Hell of the Cauldrons of Oil, where rapists, thieves, abusers, and false accusers will be repeatedly fried in vats of boiling oil.
Hell of the Cattle Pit, where those who have abused animals will repeatedly be hurt by animals in turn.
Hell of the Crushing Boulder, where those who have abandoned or killed children will repeatedly be made to hold up heavy boulders, eventually being crushed by its weight.
Hell of Mortars and Pestles, where those who voluntarily waste food will repeatedly be force-fed hell fire by demons.
Hell of the Blood Pool, where those who disrespect others will be thrown in and submerged into a pool of blood.
Hell of the Wrongful Dead, where those who have commited suicide-considered deliberately going against the karmic course of the universe-will be force to repeatedly wander the realm without a way out, while being pelted constantly by the Winds of Sorrow and the Rains of Pain.
Hell of Dismemberment, where tomb raiders will have their bodies repeatedly be torn into pieces.
Hell of the Mountain of Fire, where thieves, robbers, and the corrupt will be repeatedly thrown into the fiery pits of an active volcano.
Hell of Mills, where those who have misused their power to oppress the weak will repeatedly be crushed in a stone mill.
Hell of Saws, where those who have engaged in unethical or unfair business practises, or exploited loopholes in the legal system, will be repeatedly sawn in half by demons with saws.
They will serve their terms in each layers for their crimes feeling all the pain while constantly reviving when they die to repeat the process again till their terms are up. For suicides there is also another belief that for the suicides, the soul of the deceased repeats the same action that triggered his death once every day, and that they will not be able to leave the place of death until they find a substitute to replace them. Finally, there are the cases of death because of great injustice (大冤 dà yuān), such as the murders of innocent people. It is believed that the ghosts of those who die unjustly cannot cleanse their hearts of resentment until they see their aggressor receiving his punishment in the underworld.
In this case, the souls remain in the City of the Dead in Vain until the death of their murderer occurs. From inside this city, they observe the torture to which their aggressor is subjected and only then can they proceed to receive their trial. In extreme cases of wrongful death, King YanLuo (阎罗王) can decree a reincarnation for revenge, or give the order known as "black flag" (黑令旗 Hei LingQi), which forces the enemy of the deceased to exchange his life for that of his victim.
After the tenth trial in the last of the courts of the underworld, the soul is free to be reincarnated. But it must first cross the River of Oblivion (忘川 Wang Chuan). At the end is the Naihe River(奈何)(The river flows from hell and its flow is of blood and smells of rot.). Above this river is a Naihe bridge (奈河橋 Nai He Qiao) that souls must cross to reach their reincarnation.(Throughout the different dynasties, there has been slight changes) Naihe was short for "Having No Alternatives" (無可奈何 WuKeNaiHe) Next to the river is the Stone of Three Lives (三生石 SanSheng Shi), where souls can find inscribed everything about their previous, present and future life. On the bridge, an old woman named Granny Meng (孟婆 Meng Po) would then force the deceased to ingest her soup called "Meng Po soup" (孟婆湯 Meng Po Tang), which will make the soul forget its memories. That is why the Naihe River is also known as Wang Chuan/River of Oblivion. Afterwards they will reincarnate into one of the six paths/realms they are those of gods, Ashuras, humans, animals, hungry ghosts and hells based on their Karma(This is mainly drawn from Buddhism)
While mainly the same, there might be slight differences in versions.
The book mentioned in the stream is called the {Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon}(Huang Di Nei Jing, 黄帝内经) which is one of the earliest written work on TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine) along with 3 other medical books are considered the 4 most important book on traditional chinese medicine in China. The Book cover all the practices to promote better health and living from exercises all the way to sexual health.
The four handsomes are also met with tragic fates, They are respectively:
潘安Pan An, also known as Pan Anren, said to be the most handsome of the 4, was a writer during China's Western Jin Dynasty. he had outstanding looks and an elegant disposition. As a representative of literature in the Western Jin Dynasty, Pan An also has a certain status in the history of literature. He was gifted with a silver tongue and was talented at detailed narration and neat sentence composition, so he was known to some people at that time as a beautiful, melancholy writer. Whenever Pan went out sightseeing, he was always followed by a number of young girls. His fans, who were both young and old women who would refuse to let his horse cart go by holding hands to encircle it and then using flowers and fruit which they bought for him would try to throw them into his cart. The "Biography of Pan An within the Book of Jin" records a story in which Pan was envied by others as he could bring back a carriage full of fruits after going out for a ride, while Zhang Zai who was very ugly had to return home with children throwing stones at him when he appeared on the street. Zuo Si received even worse treatment - he was often punched by women in the street. Both were famous writers at that time, yet met with either stones or fists in the street, while Pan was greeted with fruits. The contrast increased Pan's fame. He eventually chose the wrong side in the rise to the throne and was later I believe, exiled or trapped till he died of old age losing all his life's work as a court official.
衛玠Wei Jie, There are three theories about Wei Jie's death . The first is to cater to the aesthetics of the time, "killed from being watched". It is said that Wei Jie went from Yuzhang (Nanchang) to Xiadu, and the fans/viewers were like a wall. Wei Jie died of fatigue dealing with the stress. The second is to cater to the popular talk of "talking about killing" at that time. It is said that Wei Jie and Xie Kun talked all night long in Yuzhang, and Wei Jie became ill. The third is "killed by illness". Wei Jie was in poor health since childhood , coupled with the turbulent current situation, this may be the most likely theory. But his is still pretty sad and funny as the most popular first reason, he was killed because he was stressed out by being surrounded by all the attention causing his tired body to fall sick and die.
蘭陵王Lan Ling Wang,Son of the kingdom’s Prime minister, He was a general who was also called a war god, he excelled in both the pen and sword and had upstanding morals and character, known to share everything with his man in every campaign and he would personally manage all his work dutifully. In wartime, he is said to have worn a mask to cover his face as his skin was as fair as a woman and his looks too good that that both enemy and his own men were skeptical of his abilities as a man and warrior, though the mask eventually became a habit. he died as he was too perfect, he was capable of everything and as such, the king suspected him despite his loyalty. Eventually after demotions and re-arrangement of his work and living area, the king finally ordered his death by poisoned wine which he drank.
宋玉Song Yu, a poet, he was described with the word “beautiful” as compared to the other three. He was a talented official but because he did not follow group mentality had neither rise or fall in his career, he offended a lot of people because of his unique thinking and was ostracised, he however was the only one who could say died a decent death.
The Celestial Court is like a master manipulator, setting potential challengers against each other.
