  • More Northwest action from the Ebay vault, this time a look at the Fairbanks-Morse locomotives of the Weyerhaeuser corporation, specifically on the Chehalis Western and Vail Lines. The Chehalis-Western Junction portion of the route was on trackage rights over the Milwaukee Road. There were three F-M's in use there in the 1960's and early 70's as shown in the film, supplemented in 1968 with an Alco C415. The original film was silent. Sounds are from Arkay Records and my video library. Enjoy!

Dear Lord, the opening scene of what looks like an Autocar and a beautiful Mack LMSW made my day. 😂🇺🇸

Brings back so many memories of the AC&Y's H-16-44's and H-20-44's through Sycamore , Ohio 1954 - 1960! The sound of OP power, the blue/white smoke, and the Nathan M5R24 horns. Making all of 45mph. I was very lucky to have them a block away!

Wow hard to imagine the AC&Y being in that good of shape! By the time I was railfanning in the 70's, it was more like 10mph tops! At least on the west end.

@@b3j8 I moved to Sycamore, Ohio in March of 1954 from Kansas, Ohio at age 2. Kansas was on the Lake Erie & Western district of the Nickel Plate. At that time, and until August of '56 it was still all steam - Class
H5a's and H5b's the biggest the rails could handle. Train
      # 60 and 61. From Sandusky to Lima and return 6 days a week. Sycamore , Ohio represented my introduction to diesels!! And what an introduction!! Living 1 block South of the tracks of the AC&Y on Main St. at the Methodist Church. Also took in the Ohio Central East leg through the center of town . Remembering 5 engine seasonal Northbound coal drags !

Many thanks! I'd almost forgotten what an engine and cars looked like with journal boxes instead of Timken's. Brought back a lot of memories.....

CW's Alco C-415 is on display at Fife's History Museum just north of Tacoma. During the 1960s-70s CW (and MILW) secured trackage rights over the NP/BN's Willapa Bay Branch between Chehalis & PeEll where WTC had a huge sort yard. All gone today.

Quite like the video! The D1 H-10-44 became British Columbia Railway, BC Rail, 1004, it worked the yard in North Vancouver, scrapped in 1975. I just gave away a couple of shop manuals used for this unit!

I remember seeing those loco's when I was a kid, down visiting relatives in Chehalis. I also remember a MILW RS-3 we almost became a hood ornament of in Bellingham one fine morning on Railroad Ave. All gone now and the current crop of residents here (kids mostly) don't know why Railroad Ave. is even called that. But if you know where to look, small bits are still visible here and there. The old kale cannery building still stands and one of the two bridges across I-5 still exists. And in a couple of alley ways there are still tracks, quietly rusting away.

Note the simplified nose on Chehalis Western #493. This was the result of a home rebuild after a collision with a log truck in the 1960's.
