    Damn Pete, that was one hell of a swim.
    Absolutely brutal. It looked bad on GoPro so I know it was even worse in person.
    After you got back on the river you seemed a little quiet for a few minutes while you reset. Great job shaking that off and finishing the lap.
    Awesome work by Wade too. Super quick jumping into action and figuring out what needed to be done.

    I saw Wade’s video of this paddle party and it’s gonna be sick to see another angle... underwater. More than a few paddlers gave Wade an opportunity to practice his well-honed rescue skills.

    I love Jer's smile. Seems like a really fun guy.
    Paddling through the trees and bushes?! Yikes! You can do that where I live now, but that's because the water doesn't move. In a downpour, the only thing that happens is that the moss algae and pollutants get a little more dilute.
    Jeez! Ugly surprise. Glad you were okay. Get rid of that number 13 helmet or whatever it was!
    And right there folks, is why you should always paddle with some friends. Pete got his boat, paddle, and most importantly his life back.
    Pete, It's great that you can show your mistakes. We all make 'em, and if we show the new folks what it is as well as could be, we'll probably end up with safer kayakers as a result. You get luckier if you stack the odds in your favour. Rivers have a way of making you more humble, if you prepare yourself to survive them.
    As a former Rancher, I think the saying should be, "Get back in that kayak and paddle it." The lessons learned from rivers and horses are often the same.

    Great video as usual Pete! Glad the swim didn’t rough you up to much! Random question: how well does a dry top keep you dry with a swim like that? Obviously your lower half would be soaked but I’m curious at how much they keep you dry around your torso.

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jason! The top does nothing for keeping you "dry" during a swim. It does let less water in than without and as such reduces heat loss somewhat...but nothing like a drysuit.

    Fun video, thanks for posting! For those of us unfamiliar with the area, what section of the Cheoah was this and what level was it at? I've never seen trees in the middle of the river like that. Sure, at flood stage you see them on the sides, but in the middle and so frequently? Any idea why that is? It looked like fairly continuous class II/III, and by the length of the video and that you were in creek boats I'm guessing ~8 miles or thereabouts? Any links to the section would be appreciated! I looked on AW, and all I saw was a class IV/V section (Santeetlah Dam to Calderwood) that looked significantly harder - maybe the same section but at lower flows and/or skipping some of the harder rapids?

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jaffy! No, that is the run. We did everything from top to bottom. The gopro does have the effect of making things look less impressive. The trees are there as the river is mostly de-watered with only a handful of releases each year. Most of the time they only release a minimum of water that keeps the fish and stream alive. Thus, the saplings grow in the river bed where they would normally wash away before getting established. This was a solid flow. I have done it both a little higher and a little lower. This was right in the pocket.

      @jaffy27 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RiverKingsKayak It does always look smaller on video or from shore. My problem was I actually didn't finish the video though. Doh! At the part of the video when everyone pulled in to that boat ramp and got out of their boats, I thought that was the takeout and stopped the video. I watched the rest of it, and it looks like the lower part of the run has a lot more significant rapids than the top part.

    Can we get a review on the alpha 90??

      I only paddled it once and felt it was just too big for me to get optimal performance out of it. I like the 75 better. I can say that at 165ish pounds, that bow is so big that it would climb out and over holes so fast that I would lose speed, the stern would engage and thus I would spin into the wave piles a little sideways. I just didnt have enough momentum to make it work right in big water. On the lower end of Cheoah where the river is a lot creekier in nature, it really came alive for me. Boofs really really good.

      I hear ya JPT! Is kayaking still an option for you?

    • @ElliottLaw
      @ElliottLaw ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is and I try to get out there but I don’t have a crew anymore. Some people retired from the sport and others moved to other states. I’m trying to get back into it. I was a class IV paddler working toward V. Now I just want to get out there on anything. Thank you for responding. Have a great day!

    So, other than the occasional eddy the calm sections are "mere" class 3s?
    I could never hope to aspire to this river.

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  ปีที่แล้ว

      that is basically it Jerry! Such an awesome river. It has always been one of my favorites. I would have never guessed I would have swam it...but that is all part of the fun!

      @@RiverKingsKayak At my age (72) I'm not much into anything more than an occasional class 3 drop. But that's OK because I really prefer camping expeditions anyway. I was using a 17 ft canoe but now that my wife can't go, I'm looking for something more suitable to single handing. Thinking about a Wilderness Systems Tsunami 145 but if you might care to make other recommendations I'd appreciate it.

      I think if I looked more in distress, they would have pulled over? I tell myself that anyway! I always stop to be sure a hiking paddler is good.

    Wow...That boat was pinned bad at 10:06 th-cam.com/video/f34Sbs2uBh0/w-d-xo.html. Somehow I just knew it was to be recovered in great shape! There was a lack of suspense for me. I just knew.. somehow. Wade should start autographing boats after class 4 rescues like that!🙂
