  • Lots of dogs become scared and afraid of having their nails trimmed. This video shows you how to create a positive association of nail clipping.
The article below goes into more detail and makes a nice supplement to the video.

Thank you so much for this video. My dog was so afraid of getting her nails clipped. Patience paid off and going through the steps, I'm finally getting to clip a nail or two a day. It's taken 4 weeks, but it's worth it. It'll only get better from here.

Ok I watched this video and bookmarked it but I thought “I’ll be shocked if that actually works.”
But $20 every 2 weeks at the pet groomer and my dog literally petrified and shaking with fear every time I take him to ANY pet groomer, I really was willing to try anything. It really broke my heart seeing just how terrified he was. When I try to do it, I swear he acted like I was about to commit murder. He’s only 30lbs but I could no longer hold him while he struggled. It became too much.
I had to go REALLY slow and I’m still not yet at the end. Every single day at bed time I am doing this step by step training. Sometimes one other time during the day. Each time about 5mins. I’m at the stage now where he literally gives me his paw every time I pick up the clippers.
He went from literally running away and hiding under tables when I pick up clippers to actually looking forward to me picking up the clippers. I’m truly AMAZED but it does take a few weeks with a dog as petrified of nail clipping as mine was.
I’m still in the training phase. Now as soon as he sees the clippers he lifts his paw. I can tap his nails and he just sits there waiting for the tapping to be over so he can get his treat.
I’m also lengthening the time between treats to eventually phase out the treats. At first it was every single time he gives me his paw. Now he gives me each paw, then I tap on all nails then he gets a treat.
What’s weird is he willingly gives me his right paw but seems less comfortable giving me his left paw so I’m focusing on the left paw now and he’s becoming much more willing. The rear paws don’t seem to be an issue at all for whatever reason but I’m literally working paw by paw right now.
I’m SO amazed that I had to come back and share the progress so far. Consistency and tiny treats is definitely key. My dog gets like a half a kibble sized high value treat. I have to remember to do this every single day.
It’s very slow for my dog but it’s truly magical to see your dog shift from completely terrified to completely willing when the nail clippers come out.
I’ve got one more step to go which is actually clipping and I think we’re pretty close but I don’t wanna rush it. It’s been about 3 weeks. This definitely takes patience. For me it’s about 5mins every night.

Great job sticking with it! You can add an extra step by holding the paw and clipping a toothpick in half to get your dog use to the sound as well. Wish you and your dog the best moving forward!

Ohhhh, what a fantastic idea! I will definitely give that a shot! Thanks so much. I have to tell ya I’ve been watching TH-cam dog training videos for a full year now and gave up on all the advice that was not working. Then I found your step by step videos and each one I’ve tried has worked every time. Thanks a million! 🙂🙏🏼

I’m back to report that I’m now using a dremel (my dogs worst nightmare for the sound alone). But I’m always so afraid I might cut the quick that I really wanted to switch to the dremel.
I bought the quietest one I could find on Amazon. Using this technique little Milo is now licking his lips and automatically raising his paw when he sees me bringing the Dremel out. I did this the same way - a few mins a day, one nail at a time until he was fine with it. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! 🙏🏼

I feel first time traumatized him to death. The tech at vet made him bleed . He is horrified every time he sees me with the nail grinder . And ofc covid makes it harder with everything . I tried with peanut butter, but it didnt work. He is so aggressive with the groomer too . I seriously plan to use sedation now

Thank you for this video! My dog used to scream bloody murder and bite me aggressively when I even attempted to clip her nails, and now she let's me do it without much hesitancy. There are days she pulls away her paw and other days she doesn't care when I clip, but it's a night and day difference.

Thank you for the awesome video! I have 3 dogs. I do not usually call them dogs. I call them my girls or my babies. Two are rescues that were abused and will not let anyone come near their paws; my other baby is 14 years old, blind and deaf and will no longer let anyone trim her nails. I cannot wait to implement this and help them to get past their fear of having their nails trimmed. ♥️🐕🐾🐶

I am still working on it with them because they still don’t like it but it is way better than it used to be. One is 15 years old and the other is 9 years old. They love the treats so that helps too.

@@timcat1004 You should take them to the vet. Curled nails can get stuck really easily... I understand that it's expensive, but long nails can end up deforming the feet and cause even more issues later on.

Does step 4 (not letting the dog pull away his paw) also apply to step 2 ( hold paw and treat). Touching the paw is my main hurdle. Been desensitizing him by giving his legs a good scratch and pet while while moving down to his foot. He's somewhat fine with it (highly neurotic dog, ADD like). However holding his paw is an automatic pull away and eventual growl if I attempt it too much. He's cool with clippers but the paw is my struggle. I dont know if this is significant, but he's....not a bright boy. Like goldfish level intelligence. Sweet, loving, but has a potato brain.

What if my dog try to bite me when I try to touch the paw with the clip ? Do you think I would need a muzzle or just be patience?

    • @Mydogtrainingspot
      @Mydogtrainingspot  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

If your dog is at the level where they will bite you, I would recommend slowing the process way down for now. The dog probably feels as if she is being pushed too far. It may be because the dog has had too many prior negative experiences with the clippers such as extensive restraint or the nail was cut too short. It is always a good idea to condition the dog to a muzzle to provide safety, but you will want to slow things down for now or stop with the clippers and switch to a different tool. You may want to try a scratch board for nail filing if you are afraid your dog is going to bite you.

Yes, it will work for your dog. It is important to work at the pace that is appropriate for your dog. If your dog has had a negative experience with their nails being clipped or doesn't like their feet touched in general, then you will need to go slower with each step.
