Meanwhile this game at the Trop was surprisingly crowded. There were 20,906 fans which might not sound like a lot, but that's twice as many as I'm used to seeing there AND the upper deck was closed so all of those fans were crammed down below. The Tampa Bay Rays are the best team in baseball, and the Baltimore Orioles are also crushing it this season, so this was a stellar matchup!
On a personal level, an extra fun challenge was trying to snag a gamer. The Rays are using 25th anniversary commemorative baseballs this season and I reeeeeally wanted one. How did that turn out? How close to the action did I get? What did I eat? What's the deal with all the weird stuff that took place? Very cool. I should be going up there shortly to do a check presentation and meet some of the Tampa Bay Rays broadcasters. I might get to call an inning. That would be a dream come true.

I work with a nonprofit called Honor Flight. What we do is we fly veterans to Washington DC to see the memorials built in their honor. We call it a day of service. We visit the World War II Memorial and Vietnam wall. And the veterans fly completely free. We fundraise all the money and charter flights to Washington so that the veterans can get this once in a lifetime experience. I serve as the chief historian for the South Florida chapter based in Fort Lauderdale. But I've helped raise money for the Honor Flight chapter in Saint Petersburg, and this season I will present a check for $30,000 at one of the Tampa Bay games. And, being that I am totally blind, Tampa Bay has a Spanish radio broadcaster that's also blind that has been calling their games for 25 years. I'm hoping to meet him and the other broadcasters while I'm there and talk to them about a potential career.

When you travel all the way from New York to Tampa, why don’t you stay for the whole series? Seems like a lot of traveling to not stay for a whole series no matter where you go.
I try to avoid weekend games. They're more crowded, more stressful for me, and less likely to have BP (if they're played in the afternoon). But good question. Also, I combined this stadium with Miami with a drive in the middle from one to the other, so my flights were five days apart. Not too bad.
