In high school, my chemistry teacher made us learn the metric system and we used it all year. I forgot everything ... but it was easier. Our country is weird.
As an engineering student in Australia in the 60s I did Physics calculations in both metric and imperial units and mechanical engineering calculations in imperial units. I gradually converted myself to the metric system but at the age of 50 I started working on aircraft and because the US has such a big influence on aviation and we were collaborating with the US on research I had to go back to working in a mixture of the metric and imperial units. Now just imagine how much smarter I would be if I hadn't wasted all those brain cells on unit conversion!

Yeah all the over the world, they should have three things in common:
1. Drive on the same side of the road
2. Use the same system of measurement (Metric System)
3. Use the same kind of wall socket for connecting electrical appliances..
That would make the world way much easier place to travel and live...
First and Third. I agree 100% The second one is more grey to me. In my view the metric system is nice. But having the imperial system as well in use with it is very helpful. Like for me i prefer to use inches and feet for shorter measurements and meter and kilometers for longer ones. 30 feet and under use feet and inches. Over that change to meters and kilometers.

Technically the US has already switched to the Metric System where it matters the most. It's used in medicine, science, trade and building. It's only in everyday interactions, like pumping gas or measuring your height that imperial measurement is still used. Even US drug dealers use Kilos.

The uk use a mixture. If you buy things like food and drink you buy it in kilos and litres in shops. Temperature in Celsius. But people will mostly weigh themselves in stone and pounds. Distance is more miles than km , height is usually both cm and feet and inches and drinks in pubs are pints for beers. Yet we only teach the metric system in schools.
I'd say a mixture but depends which part of the UK really, In Yorkshire, most people use Miles, Feet, Pounds and Inches.

Well, yeah, the metric system was designed for use in science and engineering. The U.S. Customary system is not well suited for that purpose.
But for ordinary everyday measurements (not complex calculations), the Customary system still works just fine. Better, in fact, because they are more familiar and more universally used among Americans.
Without speaking of rocket... the most used bullets in USA are 9 mm... and US army uses 5,56 mm - 9 mm - 12,7mm (cal 50) - 120 mm (M1Abrahms)

Fahrenheits increments are almost 2 times smaller than celsius for instance. For all intents and purpouses, they are both equally precise with enough decimals. The real killer is that the metric system became the global one and as we say in programming, conventions over preferences

I agree that the metric system is immeasurably easier to use than the imperial system, but I do not agree that one system is more precise than another. They both are expressed by numbers and you can apply as many decimals as you want to make them accurate.

The Imperial and U.S. Customary systems were never intended to be used for science, especially not 20th century (and later) science. They were developed in the 18th and 19th centuries, long before anyone knew what a wavelength of electromagnetic radiation was.
But they're fine for measuring ordinary everyday things like objects and distances. Americans are accustomed to buying food by the ounce or pound, gasoline by the gallon, etc. Measuring lengths and distances in inches, feet, or miles. And there's nothing wrong with that. Nobody is doing complex calculations with those units -- we're just *measuring* stuff, that's all. And for that purpose, the U.S. Customary system works just fine, which is why we Americans still use it.
And by the way, the Imperial system and the U.S. Customary system are not the same thing. The U.S Customary system is based on the units in use in the 18th century (and even earlier), while the Imperial system was established in 1824 by Great Britain for use in its worldwide empire (hence, "imperial"). Since the United States was already a separate, independent nation by then, it kept using the same units it had always used.
Many of the units are the same, but a few are quite different. An imperial gallon is 1.2 U.S. gallons, while an imperial fluid ounce is 0.96 U.S. fluid ounces. An imperial ton is 2240 lbs, while a U.S. ton is 2,000 lbs even.
So when referring to the measurement system commonly used in the United States, it should be called the U.S. Customary system, *not* Imperial.

Metric also translates between units.
1ml of water weighs exactly 1 gram and fills a volume of exactly 1cc.
This is why engines are measured in cc but are referred to as 3 "litre" engine. Because a 3000cc is the same volume as 3000ml which = 3 litres

However, as European I would imagine it is extremely easy for Americans to just memorize the "basic points" because - not so coincidentally - they are all very easy numbers.
The freezing point is 0°C -> 32° F
Water starts boiling at exactly 100° C --> 212°F
Well, the average temperature people like in their homes in Europe is 20°C (68°F), however, in southern Europe quite above that.
That is quite a bit more than - to our extreme surprise - the really cold air conditioned shops/hotel lobbies etc in places Like Las Vegas where the average is about 61°F -> 16° C. 16°C indoors is just extreme in our opinion!
Also, so easily to remember: 20°C in your home, 30°C (to about 34) on a hot summer day, and 40°C the absolute max on the hottest summer days.
Funny thing: When we went to Death Valley in July a few years back with a rented suburban and we had the temperature shown in the rearview mirror. It said exactly 122°F, which is - ding ding - exactly 50°C.

From the early days of our nation, the United States used physical artifacts at the Bureau of Weights & Measures as the defining standard for the yard and the pound. But by the late 1800s, those artifacts were deteriorating and unstable, and another set of standards needed to be found.
Around this time, the United States signed on to the International Treaty of the Metre and was provided with a new set of physical artifacts for the kilogram and the meter. Not only were they new, they were more stable and more practical to use as measurement standards. So in 1893 the U.S. Treasury department decided that henceforth, U.S. Customary units would be defined according to metric units, using appropriate conversion factors. This was known as the Mendenhall Order.

in England the metric system was introduced slowly alongside the old one and it has worked. Only old people still find it hard to adapt but understandably if you had to change it overnight people would struggle as they are used all their lives to another system.
They settled on one, single system of weights and measures to simplify communication. That doesn't make one system 'better'. That is actually a silly concept, if you think about it. English is the international language of aviation; that doesn't mean that English is the 'best' language in the world. As far as units of measure you can call something a mile, a kilometer, or a jimbo; it doesn't matter so long as everybody knows (physically) what it means.

The U.S. Customary system is based on units of measurement that have been around for hundreds of years -- during the Colonial Era and even before. We don't use it for "rebellious" purposes.
The fact is, when the entire population of a country -- especially a large one -- uses a measurement system -- and has done so for centuries -- and everything in that country is sized according to that system, it is extremely difficult to change.
One of the most important aspects of any measurement system is universality. Everyone needs to be using the same system, or else it doesn't work. In the United States, everyone uses the U.S. Customary system. If I'm in California and I'm speaking with someone in New York -- or Florida or Alaska or Michigan -- I can talk about the size of something in feet and inches -- or a distance in miles, or a weight in pounds and ounces, or a volume in gallons -- and he or she will know exactly what I mean. But if I start talking in centimeters and kilograms and liters, he's *_not_* going to know.
And the United States is a big country. The third largest nation in the world by both population and area, it stretches across an entire continent and comprises 330 million people. So it doesn't matter that the rest of the world uses a different system. For all practical purposes, we ARE the rest of the world. Our day-to-day dealings are almost exclusively with other Americans.
And that's why we continue to use the U.S. Customary system -- because everybody in the U.S. uses it, and it works.
Yes, despite what its detractors constantly say, it actually works quite well for its purpose of simply measuring things. We don't use the Customary system for doing complex calculations; we just use it to measure stuff.
(And note that even in the United States, the fields of science, medicine, and most industries already use the metric system anyway. It's just on the human level, when dealing with ordinary everyday measurements [not commercial or scientific] that we continue to use the U.S. Customary system.)

There's no question that the metric system is vastly superior to the U.S. Customary system for science and engineering. It's no contest.
BUT....for ordinary everyday use, the Customary system works just fine. As individuals, we are familiar with the Customary units, so we intuitively know how much a pound is, how much a gallon is, and so forth.
Also, when communicating with other Americans, we all use the same system, so we can talk to each other. I can talk to people all across the USA about how much this weighs or how long that is, etc., and they know exactly what I'm talking about. You can't do that with the metric system, which is why it hasn't been embraced by the people. For a measurement system to work, it has to be universal. In the United States, the U.S. Customary system is universal; metric is not. (I'm talking about usage among ordinary individuals, not commercial or scientific use.)
Also, all of our infrastructure is in Customary units. Buildings, factories, homes, railways.... pipes, doors, windows, etc....all in feet & inches. That means replacement parts and add-ons also have to be measured in feet and inches. If I'm replacing my 36-inch by 80-inch door, for example, I obviously have to replace it with one that is the same size.
So the fact that we still use the U.S. Customary system doesn't mean Americans are stupid or lazy or stubborn. It's just that there are very large barriers to change. And when all is said and done, there really is no _need_ to change. For ordinary everyday use, the Customary system works just fine. And for science, medicine, engineering, and industry, we already use the metric system.

No in UK and Ireland we use the Imperial system as well as some metric. More so in UK distance is measured in miles while in Ireland we use kilometres. (Well on cars and signposts we do, everyone still talks in terms of miles to measure dustance) We also measure height in feet and inches and weight in stones and pounds.

When I became a Nurse, I had to learn metric weights and measures, our fluids were ml/liters, weights kg, distance mm/cm. So we knew 2.54cm/inch, 2.2lbs/kg and so on. We use both in America, but I think Imperial.

I worked in Manufacturing and Quality Assurance for 40 years. Products designed in Inches were made and inspected in inches. Products designed in metric were made and inspected in metric. It was done as a courtesy to the designers preference. Even after retiring 5 years ago I am "fluent" in both.
I mainly find myself face to face with imperial measures when I look for food recipes in English. I can convert them pretty quick with Google, but it's still slightly annoying that I have to do so. The vast majority of the world is actually using metric system, USA rather being one of the few exceptions to this except in science.
Divide and multiply everything with ten. One cubic decimeter equals one liter. Temperatures are based on the behavior of water. Everything in metric is perfectly logical and it's fast to learn and use.

She is so right about metric system. We tried to teach it all backward. It is all by 10's and 100's. We tried to translate what we had into metric which is so backwards.
I remember when we switch on Canada. We are still using both in convos. Temp is celcius, but peoples height is in feet, miles are clicks (kilometers), etc. Its all over the place but we understand each other lol.
We Indians are the same way. Everything is in metric system, but we also speak of people's height in feet, and residential and commercial land in square feet, farm land in acres or bigas, etc. We all understand each other as well.

What Imperial System? It does not exist. Do you think NIST (the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Washington) keeps a foot/pound sample? NO.
They keep a reference for the METER, KILO, etc.
The inch is *DEFINED* to be 2.54 cm, and everything else in a similar way. The Imperial System is defined as just a bunch of weird multiples of the SI (International system).
You can switch to metric units, but a 12.7 mm bolt is still not a metric bolt. (The metric bolts are 12 mm, and the next size up is 14 mm diameter.) The same story with pipes, lumber, most of the machinery. The cost of scrapping and replacing everything that does not conform to the metric standards would be a sizable fraction of the net worth of the entire country -- and that is where much of the expense is, in truly switching to everything metric.
You have a sensible and reasoned argument, which sadly cannot be said about many other comments I have seen in the past whenever this subject comes up.

We really should switch to metric. The reason we don't because companies, specifically banks, say it would be very expensive. That is true in the short run, but in the long run it would be very beneficial.

The metric system is a consistent and coherent system of units. In other words, it fits together very well and calculations are easy because it is decimal. This is a big advantage for use in the home, education, industry and science.
I find it interesting because the first thing Americans have to learn in an advance class in chemistry in college is the metric system. So, I had to learn the system to convert metric system to the system Americans’ use to than convert back at the exams. It seems very impractical that to do anything relevant in sciences subjects in college, you have to learn another system. And makes knowledge harder to obtain, because those who don’t know the metric system wont understand an explanation of a study or something

In a global world it's better for the USA to adapt to the uniform standard. There are still other areas where uniformity would better work out like e.g. for the date fields.
Metric is a beautiful system. Its not just decimalisation of the each unit of measure its the decimalization of the relationship between units.
Volume and mass being the most convenient in everyday life. A litre of water is a 1kg. So if you know the density ratio (liquids don't vary much away from 1) you can do the conversion in your head
For Americans who don't understand the English education, Lower Sixth is the first year of sixth form (year 12) and upper sixth is the second and last year's if sixth form (year 13). Sixth form comes from a system in which we called our secondary years first form, second form etc and it stuck around after we change our secondary school year from Year 7 to Year 13. Year 12 or lower Sixth is your 11th grade

The metric system is very intuitive, in the same way the decimal system is intuitive. If you divide a unit in 10 equal parts, things become much easier, probably because we have 10 fingers, so that becomes the standard in our calculations from a very young age. A foot has 12 inches. It makes no sense, why would you do that?

I don't know why Americans want to hold on to Imperial system, it did not originate in the USA and the country where it originated (UK) has largely ditched it as well.
The United States has never used the Imperial System. Our Customary units come from the English units which predate the Imperial System. It doesn’t matter that it largely originated elsewhere. It wouldn’t do to create a system unique to the United States.
