The term "BOOMER!!' came from the fact that a cannon was used as a signal to the people were able to take off and claim land. It's very similar to a pistol being fired with blanks and being used to let the runners know that the race has begun. The term, "SOONER!!" was used to denote those people who snuck in early and claimed the area of land BEFORE the other people who waited at the proper time to find a claim of land.
I learned that in my second year History class at my Canadian unviersity!

FYI, Boomer refers to the people that started the 1889 land run when the cannons went off. Sooner refers to those that snuck out to stake out land before the official start time.

Back in the day, we wore Russell Athletic. It was definitely not the stuff Walmart sales. Super high quality and comfortable to wear. I played division 2 football. Today I would say Jordan is definitely the coolest sponsor out there. I do like Adidas though. They do a super nice job on the actual uniform design.
