I appreciate having the "cheaper cars" in the movie. It was nice seeing a movie where the main cars were cars that most of us could afford and already owned. It made the movie somewhat realistic and relatable. Outside of stealing stuff out of trucks, it was basically the same thing my friends and I were doing around the time the movie came out. I think that's why we loved it. Nothing to do with the acting or even the characters for the most part, we just loved seeing and hearing the cars!
Exactly! Something the rest of the movies lack. I'll never forget the summer of 2001. Or walking out of the theater opening night of fast 1. What a time to be into cars, and be 17 almost 18.
@@vermontvermont9292I was 15 when The Fast & The Furious came out, but I bought the DVD on eBay (it was a bootleg I later found out) and so for me it was leaving the theater after 2 Fast 2 Furious in my 1993 300ZX. Even though that movie wasn’t as good I still had a ton of fun getting into tuner culture back then.
I think the reason these newer movies don't have cars fetching such a high price is that they just aren't treated like characters as they used to be. Dom's driving every variation of Charger/Challenger under the sun, and everyone else is driving a new supercar in the next scene. You just don't see the character as owning the car and building it themselves as you did with the older movies.
You're a legend Craig. So happy you're still covering these iconic cars. First movie is bonafide classic, and still the most quotable out of all the films.

The danger to manifold thing is hilarious. Even as a 12 year old watching this movie I questioned how the floor pan bolts could explode off like that. Still loved the movie more than anything though.
Rip John Lapid. A great friend who showed me a lot about cars but mostly about shooting. He invited to shoot my first competitive match. I miss this guy. Thanks for the story. This is exactly how he told me everything went
I absolutely loved the bit about how Craig thought Brian's Eclipse should fail during the first race of the movie. I was only 15 at the time when the movie came out, didn't know anything about cars and I still thought that whole sequence was absurd, especially the bolts and the floor of the car coming apart because of "nitrous" lol. Love these little insightful videos. Keep up the great content Craig!
Back in 1998 highschool my homie got himself a GSX and another friend in College had a GSR not knowing how special they are to JDM/DSM scene years later.
In my opinion the 95-99 Eclipse GSX with the right engine and exterior mods was the best combo of performance and style of the era that would still hold true to this day
I found out about 1G DSM's because of this film - I was 7 when it came out and I vividly remember my mom renting it for me from Hollywood Video in 2002, I had stayed home from school sick and watched this over and over. Probably watched this movie 3 dozen times in my childhood and still give it a watch once every few years. A Green 1G Talon TSi AWD was my first car, put a manual boost controller on it and re-wired the fuel pump, turned up the boost to 15psi. Had so much fun in that thing and it never left me stranded.
I still have my 98 gsx that i purchased brand new in 1998, i had my eclipse before Brian 😂❤. I was beyond excited when I saw the first scene with the eclipse pulling up when I went to the premier fast and the furious in the theater. I had a friend that worked at tinseltown at the time and he got me a sneak peek 👍
I used to have a heavily modified 99 gsx about 12 years ago. Was a hell of a car. I miss that car. I was dailying it and had no money to fix it when it broke. Sold it to the local DSM guy and have missed it since.
Back in the day I had a 97 GSX that had the 4g63, What a great car it was! I had it from 98 to 05 when I ended up trading it for an EVO 8 MR, Mitsubishi used to have such cool cars.
“Spark and fire”… lmao I just found your channel Craig, like a week ago and I have been enjoying your videos! Thanks for letting us know all about the cars. I want to see what happened to Dom’s RX-7 Cheers
@@Qbank007Yeah, Craig has been doing videos for about 5 years now. Even this video here is an updated version of a video about the Eclipse he did a few years ago.
My bro bought a Mitsubishi Eclipse 99 RS new back in 98. Which I bought from him 15 years ago and still own it. I bought an Eclipse Spyder GST 97 with 54k miles all stock couple months ago. I know the Eclipse isn’t the fastest or best car but it has always been my favorite.
I had a 98 gsx eclipse. Red with the same body kit as the hero 1 car. I didn't have any stickers or decals just red paint. Spoiler was deleted on mine. I loved that car.
I'm 32 now. The first movie is probably one of the biggest reasons I'm a car guy and mechanic. The new movies have turned too much into cookie cutter action and lost the feel of car culture.
I feel that like the first 3 movies were about the cars and race. 4 and after felt like a giant doge commercial meets the avengers. But I realize I will never own my dream 92FD I guess I’ll get a gt86 and build a sleeper
I also built an 97 Eclipse because of this movie but it was the RS model with a 420a. Added a Star Performance stage 2 turbo kit with T4T3 turbo and a Apexi N1 exhaust. Ran mid 12s in rhe 1/4 mile with a few other add ons. Was lucky enough to be included in 2 Fast 2 Furious during the warehouse scene.
Realistically, how high can the boost be turned up until it's problematic. Majority of forums typically responded with 6PSI but no more than 8.... and yet TH-cam videos had popped up on occasion proving otherwise (although not as dependable long term). I'd set something up myself but online community claims they're not complete or are misleading. Last year I said to hell with it and stuck a 50-shot bottle on there then called it a day. Helps a lot when merging into speeding traffic or when people are being bullies.
@Devious_Reviews On the stock 420a that I had, I wouldn't go over 10 psi. The 420a is a high compression 10:5 engine. Still, 10 psi is good enough for daily driver.
Ah, that sounds better. Wishful thinking though. Turbo kits on the market are either incomplete or have wrong bits and bobs. Many have posted (cheaper) list of parts but as always some things have to be discontinued. No premium tacked onto the overall cost though!@@Batalia122
Came across a replica about a year ago where i used to live in Norway, brought so much joy to my inner child I knew people were doing replicas but never thought i would see one in small Norway
It’s nice to see the 90s Honda accords souped up. I feel that’s an over looked car. I’ve owned 3 ‘88-89 accords. They are super tough cars, the motors don’t quit.
I owned a 95 Honda accord manual when the first movie came out. I was stoked to see one at race wars in the movie. I immediately proceeded to rice out my accord after watching that movie and raced around like it was fast. I owned that thing for like 7 years and put close to 300k miles on it. It still ran like an absolute top. I did take all the rice out stuff off and got a reasonable exhaust, intake and nice wheels and proper suspension kit on it eventually before I sold it. It was very clean.
I will always be a huge fan. I remember everything. Those cars were a dream when I was 18. Thanks for the memories. I had a Grand Am GT then. Ended up with an MR2 turbo. 👊🤣
John Lapids death hit hard. The Eclipse was in my eyes the best buildt cars in the series. I wish I would have sent him a message of his inspiration of his car before he passed. The bodykit, wing, mirrors and ofcourse roofscoop. It gave serious racecar vibes. Almost GT3 look. Also the carbon dash, aftermarked gauges you would find in rally cars, the A pilar gauges and the rollcage. It still gives me goosebumps whenever I watch FnF1.
Even though it was all fake. When I saw it in the theater, I had already owned a real turbo Eclipse for several years, and was disappointed to see a non-turbo in the movie.
Yeah when i was a teen i did not think about this stuff. But now i'm a huge car guy and now these scenes with the floorpan and nos does not make any sense 😂
This is the video I needed to see. I remember going to the theater as a 15 year old kid falling in love with tuner cars and leaving there trying to figure out how to buy a FD or Supra MKIV. I was disappointed when the movies went the route of drugs and smuggling because it gave the old crowd something to fictitiously hate on us for and soiled the tuner scene a bit. But I'm happy to hear the stories behind the cars like this and knowing the tech adviser was against a lot of that gives me a bit of closure haha. I still to this day want a gsx. I need to do that....
While in highschool I wanted a 96 Eclipse when they came out, before the movie was ever a thought, cause i just loved the body style. Afterwards when the movie came out I gave up on ever wanting to own one cause I knew they would become such demanded vehicles along with the Toyota Supra. It's crazy to think how iconic one movie made those cars become such legends.
Imo the Eclipse was the coolest of the import coupes during that era. Every generation. Almost bought one twice, but they sold before I got to them. That body just kept getting better every year. Still would love to have one.
I was already up on JDM before this movie because of Gran Turismo. Talk about full circle. I couldn’t believe the hero car was an Eclipse and the most background character in the movie had an R33 GT-R. Don’t even mention “DANGER TO MANIFOLD” or “Shut up!”.
So Brian was driving an eclipse with a patched whole on the passenger seat floor!.. And He didn't even weld it back, no, he used bolds and rivets.. Got to love universal!!!
I dig all the stories and info that comes from this channel regarding the F&F movies especially the first one. The car scenes changed so much since then. I bought an eclipse about 5 yrs ago that I was gonna convert to a replica but it was too far gone to waste the money. I've since found a very clean one and I plan on making the replica with that one!! I wish the franchise would add that import and american street racing feel of the first 2 movies again but that's just a dream seeing that the cars aren't the focus anymore and it's gotten even worse since Paul Walker passed because he was the true car guy! Good video!!
I've owned quite a few import cars because of this movie from my 1990 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD, to my 1992 Acura Integra, to my 1990 Eagle Summit sedan that I swapped a 4g61t into with a five speed manual, to my 1992 Plymouth Colt hatchback that I swapped a fully built 4g63t into, to my 1997 Civic coupe with a fully built and forged B18C turbo that made 709 whp. This movie changed my life.
That’s what’s up man I currently have a 1992 eagle talon tsi awd. I’ve had a lot of those cars rebuilt and sold them for majority of my income but, I also worked at a import car tuner shop. My current car makes 1130 wheel and about 1400 crank it’s a big turbo aluminum long rod 4G63. Dream builds are a 1993 gsx with a compound turbo 4G63/4G64 hybrid looking to build a 2.3 stroker motor or 1993-1995 eagle summit two door coupe but awd and a 4G63 swap, I’ll call it the baby talon tsi awd. And I’ve had a few dodge stealths and few Mitsubishi 3000 gt and a blue gto I was quite proud of. I’ve got lots of experience with 6G72’s and 6G75’s and 4G69
honestly, i think all of us just want fast and furious to go back to the car scene and racing with a bit of low key criminal story. the first 3 films people could connect with as it was as close to real as it was going to get.
sadly not as the studio is only looking a big money turn over and that will only be done in their eyes by flying cars, going to space and all manor of stuff that would kill people in the real world. where as all of us just want the old stuff back @@desertwhaler

I went into this video (having just found this channel) NOT expecting this. I loved this, every gripe and issue everyone into the tuner scene proper ever had, was one Craig had too, that is so awesome that it was everyone BUT the car procuring guy that made certain scenes goofy.
Iam a car guy and know exactly what you mean about the NOS scene, it would of been better than some random floor plate failing off then Dom has to sit in that seat 10mins later 🤣🤣🤣
Oh wow I actually took pics with this car at the museum when we went last year. I had no clue that was the actual car! That's crazy. When the movie came out I had a 98 Eclipse and I love and miss that car.
Imagine having not shown up to a car meet because you didn’t believe that the film would be a HUGE hit . Later to find out your import literally could’ve been a movie star😂. That’s like a 1/50 chance of having a winning lottery ticket.
It’s wild to think what this movie did for all us young guys and gals growing up and how into cars everyone suddenly was. Those were good years. Lots of fun.
I was into cars before I was any of the Fast and Furious movies but the early movies got me into tuner and JDM cars, out of all the cars the eclipse was the one that left a huge impression on me
Good info and your idea for the replacement of danger to manifold scene would have been way better. Wish they would have listened to you. The guy I got my eclipse from tried telling me it was a leftover from the movie and he lost the documents. Dude said it came from a storage lot in Arizona.
Sparks and fire 😂😂😂 👉🤯 you killed me man 🤣🤣🤣 happy new year, my favorite movie of all time, know the whole script and everything.... race on to Brian 🎉
I think about buying one of these every once in a while just to do a fast and furious car, but keep talking myself out of it. I know I don’t have room or time but I still want it
Also the livery , sponsor , color , wheels , bodykit edit sound engine and effect , acting, car scene , angle camera, story line, dialog, charactere, perfect car choice, first entry intro in movie , and many more thats a reason why fan and me like thr fast and furious 1, 2 , tokyo drift
This movie started my addiction to cars at 11. I wasn’t old enough to see it by myself so my dad took me. Later I would sneak into f&f2 as I wasn’t 13 years old yet … bought tickets to Bruce almighty to see it and they caught us and kicked us out. The memories this movie made for me is incredible
The Arizona license plate and drivers license made every teen in Phoenix a Brian spilner . A lot of us thought footage in the Glendale ca. was glendale Arizona . AOL 3.0 btw
Some times i like to come back to this video. Tho the movie is very unrealistic, the eclipse is probably the most legendary, its one if my favorite cars in the entire franchise. And its so disappointing how little screen time it actually got.

Tell me about it I just spent $1700 on a clutch for my built 800hp 2011 mazdaspeed3. Then 2k to install. Now it still works.😆
Unfortunately nothing they do can bring back the magic of the originals.
sadly not as the studio is only looking a big money turn over and that will only be done in their eyes by flying cars, going to space and all manor of stuff that would kill people in the real world. where as all of us just want the old stuff back

It will never have the same vibe as the original movie!
It was produced in 2000…
Different lifetime!
@@Kev27RS shame as it’s what we all really want. Use to be about the average guy or girl into cars. Something car people could relate to. Not about super cars and space ships 🤷🏻♂️
@@dandantheminiman I agree!
It’s different now, but to be fair:
The fact that the recent movies are so over-the-top, is one of the reasons why the original movie is so special nowadays (even more special now than it already was).
Never ceases to amaze me, movie executives always think they have the best ideas 98% of the time they are wrong and their ideas blow
I still wish the TOYOTA MR2 SW20 had mad in as one of the main legacy cars from the first film
Fast and furious and 2 fast where the best i like how he explains the whole cars
I went into this video (having just found this channel) NOT expecting this. I loved this, every gripe and issue everyone into the tuner scene proper ever had, was one Craig had too, that is so awesome that it was everyone BUT the car procuring guy that made certain scenes goofy.
Craig Lieberman had sex with Harvey Weinstein I heard
Iam a car guy and know exactly what you mean about the NOS scene, it would of been better than some random floor plate failing off then Dom has to sit in that seat 10mins later 🤣🤣🤣
Oh wow I actually took pics with this car at the museum when we went last year. I had no clue that was the actual car! That's crazy. When the movie came out I had a 98 Eclipse and I love and miss that car.
Man! Your suggestion of a blown nitrous line? Definitely would have been better than a manifold causing a floorboard to fall out!
Fast 1 & 2 the only ones that count
123 stop at Tokyo drift.
Great story. I have a picture of myself sitting in the hero Eclispe.
Imagine having not shown up to a car meet because you didn’t believe that the film would be a HUGE hit . Later to find out your import literally could’ve been a movie star😂. That’s like a 1/50 chance of having a winning lottery ticket.
One of my top movie cars ever. Thanks for sharing its story.
You know how hard it is to find a clean DSM these days
Damn, near impossible
It’s not hard at all but it is hard to find one for a good price
Everybody wanted an eclipse because of Fast and Furious and Need for Speed Underground.
After watching Craig's videos about FF I bought red 1998 Eclipse 2 months ago.
It’s wild to think what this movie did for all us young guys and gals growing up and how into cars everyone suddenly was. Those were good years. Lots of fun.
Don't speak for everybody. Even though I was a kid, I was still into cars before these movies, so I never had bad ricer taste. lol.
Can you do a video about every car in the huge scramble scene from 2f2f. I would love to see a list of them!
Already did ig
In a strange way, we relate more to the eclipse ,then we would have to the 3000GT.
I know I don’t have room or time but I still want it
I wanna see the boost Civics next.😊
That it's just a.. Master piece!..Was,is and will be my dream car ever..Thank you so much for share this details!..
AOL 3.0 btw
Great video. Sad to hear John passed He built one hell of a legend of a car!
Some times i like to come back to this video. Tho the movie is very unrealistic, the eclipse is probably the most legendary, its one if my favorite cars in the entire franchise. And its so disappointing how little screen time it actually got.
I thoroughly enjoy these videos.
Such a shame the Eclipse owner passed away. He didnt look very old!
The whole world just love JDM because we can get creative on finding ways to outdo the others by modifying the looks and adding more power. Its a never ending project ❤️
