    I have the ttartisan 35 f1.4 and the 50 f1.2. Both excellent lenses. Slightly old fashioned I’d say and need a little more thought to use them well. Not a bad thing if you can get it right . I have a good feeling about this lens. Happy days.

    Thanks for this. I've been very frustrated at the lack of 3rd party lenses around the 18mm mark for Fujifilm x-mount. Because it's my favourite wide lens too. This really fills the gap. The price is killer. And it'll be great for photographing indoors and at night. I'll be very excited to see the in-depth reviews. But at the price, there'd have to be some devastating flaw to make me discount it.

    Oooh~! This one is 17mm f/1.4!
    I saw a similar lens in my local camera shop few days ago, but it was the 35mm f/1.4 one. It has exactly the same design so I didn't notice the one I saw was not this lens. In my country, Indonesia, the official TTArtisans store already sell the 35mm f/1.4 for fuji FX, Leical/Panasonic L, Nikon Z, Canon M, and Sony E mount.

    TTArtisan makes very lovely lenses. I was pretty skeptical about Chinese lenses in general until I gave a try to TTArtisan 23mm f1.4 for my Sony a6000. Needless to say that it never got unscrewed from my camera to this day! I am a MF lenses user for years and especially vintage models. I had many Zeiss, Voigtlander, Zenit or Meyer Optik native or adapted on my old full frame DSLRs but after years I sold everything (for personal reasons) and I started again using a crop camera. Beside the image quality and sharpness (those comes second and third in my book) what is really impressive on TTArtisan lenses is the character, something that is more common on old, uncorrected lenses. The rendering and even the flaws (like the field curvature that I love) are screaming character! Lastly, another aspect is the fact that for APSC cameras there aren’t any MF/Manual aperture lenses outside Chinese manufacturers! Not from the premium brands like Voigtlander or Zeiss (all are designed for FF, so the DoF scale is useless due to crop factor), and not even from the true vintage offerings (also full frame).
    To be precise, these aren’t lenses for those who want edge to edge sharpness and superior image quality. There are not designed for that purpose. But if you like something unique that resembles the old days, something for street or general photography, and you can embrace the imperfections (it’s a photography trend these days) then here you have it! And thank god, are really inexpensive!!

    Hi Mattias ! I'm exactly in the same situation as you. Actually own the 16mm 1.4 but find it too bulky, which means it stays home most of the time. I try to find a 24/28mm equivalent for my fuji that could replace it. 16mm 2.8 had not enough wide aperture. Which would you recommend for street/documentary/travel between the ttartisan 17mm and the xf 18mm f2 (18mm f1.4 is sadly too bulky). Thanks again!

    Hi, I currently have a Pen-F and Sigma 30mm 1,4 and am very happy but unfortunately too big.
    I am interested in a bright compact lens mainly for street photography and I am undecided between the two TTartisan lenses 23mm 1,4 (plus compactness) and the 17mm (plus focal but less compact) what do you recommend? I would have doubts about their sharpness, to be picky, the potential that the two lenses have in post-production both with open and closed aperture.

    Hello Mattias and thank you for yet another great video! A quick question for you, if you know: In the X-E4 Focus Check (magnification) automatically engages when a fuji lens is manually focused. Can this be done with 3rd party lenses, or do I have to assign and push a button to manually engage focus check? Thank a million!

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That can only be done with an auto focus lens. It needs electronics to be able to tell the camera it’s focusing.
      On the X-E4 pressing the joystick jumps to magnified view when using a manual lens. But you can move it to any function button.

    Gotta love fast 28mm equivalents like this, for some reason they often have great close focus as well. Neat!
    One thing I noticed with affordable manual primes vs. real vintage glass, you often get better flare resistance and sharpness from the new stuff because of better coatings and machinery. Plus of course no worries about oily apertures, fungus, or haze, instead the concern is quality control.
    I have a Vivitar 28mm f/2 which would give about equivalent depth of field on full frame as the TTArtisan, but does flare quite a bit. It's nice and fast, but it made me realize what I really want is a 28mm 1.4 FF lens (Nikon, Sigma, or maybe that incredible Summilux) for the superlative rendering, sharpness, and overall je ne sais quoi. Of course, then it's not a street pancake like a traditional 28mm, it's a kilo of pure bokeh :)

  • @adam_mawz_maas
    @adam_mawz_maas 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The vintage look is the same as their 50/1.2 and 35/1.4 APS-C mirrorless lenses.
    However, I'm totally into this, as it fills a gap in the 3rd party options that is only really covered by the 18/6.3 UFO.
    Now they just need to do a 23/1.4...

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite different design imo, this is like a classic voigtländer.

      @thebitterfig9903 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gearreallydoesntmatter TTArtisans has two 35/1.4-a Leica M one that looks like a normal Leica lens, and a Fuji/APS-C one that has the same conical shape with the optical formula printed on it, thin focus gear, clicked front aperture. It’s a hair smaller than the 17mm, based on the specs, but very comparable. I love their 35mm on the Fuji and think the handling is a lot of fun.
      I’m picking this up the instant I can, since the sub-$150 budget manual lens world (aka everything Pergear makes) has a serious gap in wide angle options. I don’t enjoy the 7Artisans 25/1.8 and it isn’t even that wide, the fixed focus 7Artisans 18/6.3 isn’t my style, and the Pergear 10/8 fisheye isn’t exactly an everyday lens (even if it is a fun little oddball pancake). An ordinary wide angle that’s sharp enough, with handling that I already know that I like, and the option to throw open incredibly wide for indoor or night use? I don’t even need to think twice.

    Hmmm... I know you often say gear doesn’t matter... I also know you’re a very talented photographer
    Still... the images you share here from this lens and the XE-4 are very, very attractive

    thats not how you change a lens.... X_X Even tho its quick, you should hold the sensor downwards ive been taught to eliminate dust LANDING on it.

      It doesn’t matter, you still need to clean your sensor every now and then, so who has the energy. I often change lenses standing in the middle of a dust cloud on sandy arenas.

    Nice review. Although I don't like the looks of this lens :/

      The classic vintage look will never be for everyone.

      @@gearreallydoesntmatter that lens element diagram threw me off. I like the aperture ring and vintage lenses.

    The Lens body design is copied from Voigtlander Heliar 50mm f3.5.

      They usually are on wide angle until stopped down. It's a cheapo lens!

    Happy about the 17mm, but it is a seriously ugly looking lens!

    Interesting but incredibly ugly lens 🤔

      They went for the classic vintage look which isn’t for everyone. Personally I don’t care what a lens looks like.
