We cruised on Canberras last trip, a rather proper British lady on our table at dinner remarked that we did not look like "regular" cruisers on the P&O, I simply remarked that I had cruised on the Canberra before and remained silent. She then demanded to know when I said 1982 and she demanded to know where we had "gorn" the gorn because she thought she was quite posh. I remarked the Falkland Islands and added "the shore excursion was a bit of a bastard" which seemed to keep her quiet for the rest of the trip.

My grandmother was a complainer. She took about 3 cruises a year and I accompanied her a couple of times (she always took a family member with her) and she complained nonstop from boarding to disembarking. Everything from having to wait 30 minutes before entering our stateroom after boarding, to the buffet lacking pickled beets, to the poolside party lasting too long so the noise was distracting while she walked from the casino to her stateroom. The last straw for me was when she loudly complained about the smell of someone who was IN the elevator with us! A free cruise is nice, but cruising with Grandma was kinda like visiting a plain of hell. She finally ran out of family members who were willing to keep going with her! Bless her though. I went on my first cruise because she brought me along. I love cruises! Every one is different and I've never found anything to complain about, even if things aren't perfect.

My wife tells me I always get what I want on cruises. I find the best way to do it is not to complain, just state what I need and ask is there anyway it can be accommodated. Most importantly be respectful, never raise one’s voice and thank the crew member(s) for going out of their way. The crew works terrible hours, are away from their families for months at a time and their accommodations are nowhere as good as mine.

I've never worked on a cruise ship, but having worked in hospitality for years, I've heard just about everything. On a helicopter ride on Grand Cayman, a lady on board the helicopter with us asked the pilot, "Does the water go all the way around the island?" I overheard another lady ask one of the cruise staff, "Excuse me, what elevation are we at?", to which the employee looked down the side of the ship towards the water and replied, "About 40 feet." And easily the best response I've heard was when a gentleman had asked, "Does the ship generate its own power?" Clearly the cruise line employee had either been asked that before, or was expecting it, because he went into this rather lengthy fake explanation of how the ship was plugged in at the port in Miami, and being the last day of the cruise, there was an employee named Jose down below deck, who's responsibility it was to reel the cable back in, and make sure that it doesn't get tangled up before the next cruise.
And while it isn't cruise related, since I live in a ski town, you'd be surprised how many tourists have asked me over the years, "Do you know what elevation the deer turn to elk?", and occasionally, "At what time do the Maroon Bells chime?" (Maroon Bells being the name of a pair of local mountains)

These are nuts! A tour guide in Hawaii told me about tourists complaining that you couldn't drive between islands or asking how to get to the bridge that takes you off the island. Also, I am ashamed to admit I've never seen an elk in real life but was trying to keep an eye out for them on a road trip last October. When I saw a picture I realized I'd really been keeping an eye out for moose. Is it just me or do they look like deer with fuzzy antlers?

    • @TommyNewnes
      @TommyNewnes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@tinabean713 Both deer and elk have fuzzy antlers, depending on the time of year. They shed their antlers towards the end of winter, like in February, and then the antlers grow back, which is when they look all furry. Eventually the fur falls off, leaving just the bone of the antlers. I don't remember the technical term, but moose, elk, and deer are all in the same family of animals, so there are a lot of similarities. I'm not sure about all elk, but the ones around here are usually easy to tell from a deer because they have a white butt, and the male elk have longer fur around their neck, sort of like a lion's mane. The males also have a much larger rack, at least compared to mule deer, which are the deer we have locally. Elk are typically bigger than deer as well, although I don't know that the difference is big enough to tell unless you saw them standing next to each other, unlike moose which can end up quite a big larger. We have moose here locally too, but in much smaller numbers. I'm not sure the best way to tell them apart driving down the road, unless you see them quite often and can spot the differences in a split second, but I'd say probably the most descriptive thing between the 2 would be the larger rack and white butt on the elk.

I did hear a guy at the buffet who complained to everyone that the ship had the wrong type of cream cheese cheese - he had a plate full of smoked salmon, capers, onions, several bagels & he apparently didn’t like the cute little balls of regular cream - he wanted the whipped type (but he wasn’t funny - because he was yelling at the young crew members who were working so hard to refresh the buffet)! And Emma, I was on a Princess cruise several years ago - I had been upgraded to an owners suite which was truly incredible- I fell in love with that suite but noticed that the carpet near the walk-in closet was wet - I thought that maybe the passengers who had been in the cabin before me had spilled something on the carpet & perhaps the cleaning crew had just cleaned that spot - but it kept getting wetter - so I told the absolutely wonderful cabin steward about the wet spot - he told me & my friend Nancy to go get some lunch & he would take care of the carpet right away - we came back from eating a leisurely lunch about an hour later & the carpet had been replaced - brand new carpet (and there had been a pipe underneath the floor that had been leaking which is what caused the wet carpet - so the leak was repaired)! I stood there in total amazement!! If I needed carpet replaced in my house it would probably take at least a week & here we were on a cruise ship embarking from Seattle heading to Alaska & we had brand new carpet! I had always known that cruise ship crews & maintenance guys were capable of handling just about anything - but I was really so impressed by this - our little floating city could be refurbished & immediately!! Our cabin steward deserved the very generous extra tip we gave him before we debarked - he went above & beyond the whole week!!

Only thing I can think is that the people who had booked that suite had to cancel & the balcony cabin that we booked would have been easy to re-book (the suite - probably not) - and my travel agent told Princess that I was recovering from cervical fusion surgery - would be using a scooter & wearing a hard neck collar! The suite was amazing!

At breakfast on the Queen Elizabeth we heard a lovely, but rather naive lady, order the fruit "compost". We heard one American lady complain that the chairs in the theatre were too narrow for her. The member of staff was very diplomatic when answering that. On a cruise to the Canaries, with three sea days heading out before our first stop, one woman moaned that she was getting "stir-crazy". Did she not know where the Canary Islands are? Or that the ship would take three days to get there when she booked? You hit the nail on the head later in your video when you said how some people are just looking for things to complain about. If the toilet overflows, or shower doesn't work, those are things worth complaining about because they should work and you can't do without them. But the wrong colour bread or the wrong type of jam really does not matter. And when I'm on holiday, it matters even less.

Worked on a cruise ship for 6 months back in the '90s. Some people do have very strange complaints. Best 3 complaints I remember:
    * Like there was nothing at the breakfast buffet she liked. We had all sorts of bread, cereals, milk, juices, pancakes, eggs etc. etc.. You could take a full English, American or Continental breakfast if you wanted. The lady wanted some kind of very local South American item. No we don't have it onboard and no, we are not going to order it in for you only.
    * Someone complained about getting seasick, well that's really annoying but he was pissed off because the ship sailed across the ocean instead of moored up in a port for the whole cruise. He never thought a cruise ship would sail from one port to another when he was onboard. He thought he would travel by plane to another city and the ship would show up there by magic...
    * A man complained there was no pleasure park at the ship for his kids. We pointed him towards the swimming pool, play court, arcade, kids club, cinema, but he and the kids were very annoyed there was no rollercoaster and no waterslide park at the ship. Because that's what they "need on vacation". Well sorry, but where at the ship would you think where those would fit?
And of course all kind of other strange complaints. Like the logo of the cruiseline was on the towels, lot of things had a white&blue theme (yes, those were the colors of the cruiseline), we didn't serve wine at the breakfast, the chocolate sauce to pour over your ice cream at the buffet was warm (she wanted it cold - if we had it cold it would be a solid junk of chocolate), the strawberries had small specks at them - yes, that's how real strawberries look. The hot tap water was hot, yes, that's why there is cold water to mix in at the shower/sink. Did book a softdrinks-only-package and complaining she had to pay for her alcoholic drinks. The family who went in to the city at a port, met a crewmember (who had a day off and also went into town) and the crewmember didn't recognize them immediately and didn't want to carry their bags back to the ship. And of course at every cruise there were a few who didn't return on time and found their ship gone at the port and be amazed the ship didn't return to collect them.
After the 6 months experience of working on a cruise ship, I won't be surprised by whatever someone wants to complain about ;-)

We expected them to fix the leak and put some fans out to dry the carpet - when we got back from the excursion we had to way for a little while to get in our cabin because they were replacing the carpet in the entire cabin. I was really impressed!!!

As someone that works in hospitality (albeit hotels not cruises) none of this surprises me at all. I can't stress enough the importance of treating hospitality workers with respect, especially if you are trying to get us to do something unusual or accommodate a specific request for you. The moment you raise your voice you will not get a thing from us at all. It always amazes me how people think that shouting and swearing at me will get them what they want when in fact it's exactly the worst thing they could do.

Regarding having live animals on board, I know way back in the day on naval vessels they used to keep live chickens and pigs and, if it were a larger warship, even a small cow or two on board so that the sailors would have fresh meat after a couple months of sailing. Obviously those days are long gone!

On my first cruise ever, I brought my younger cousin with me, who had ALSO never crusied. We were both in our 20s, me late 20s, her early. We got on the ship for a 7 day caribbean cruise to 5 ports in Miami and I began unpacking my bag. She just laid on the bed and chilled. I finished and we went to go eat. Went about our day (b/c we got there at like 11a) on HAL Zuiderdam. Later that night, I noticed she hadn't unpacked and was only grabbing items out of bag and putting the bag back down, still full. I asked her "'uh, aren't you going to unpack?"
She was not going to unpack. She thought we stayed in a hotel in EVERY port. I asked her, so what do you think the beds right here and the closet are for if that was the case? Yeaaaaaaaaah, we are both born and raised in the US, have TV and the internet and it was only 2014. The look of oooooooooooooooooh across her face. Yeah, obvious things are not so obvious if you don't do your research.

Hi Emma, just watching some of your older videos. Referring to the horizontal elevators, perhaps this was someone who watched Star Trek. 23rd Century elevators, called Turbolifts, do move vertically and horizontally to get you around the overlarge spaceship. However, I've never encountered someone who thought these existed yet. Maybe Royal Caribbean can put them into Icon!

I got a particular chuckle about the chickens below decks story. I know in fact that there was a class of US destroyers, the Kidd class that was ordered by the Shah of Iran in the 70’s. They hadn’t been delivered yet when the Iranian revolution occurred in ’79, so the US didn’t deliver ship them off to Iran, but kept them instead. One of the specifications for the Kidd class build was an actual room to keep live goats aboard for producing goats’ milk for the crew! Of course, when the US kept them, the goats’ rooms were utilized in other non-animal ways! While aboard the USS Spruance, we passed the Kidd, the class of which closely resembled the Spruance class.

We were on Norwegian Gem in 2012 and got caught in Hurricane Sandy. Captain made a run from Caribbean to get back early but Port Of NY were clearing out and weren't allowing any ships in. We had to head back out into the North Atlantic. ( 9 Day cruise turned into 14 - Happy Days !!!) The services desk was practically swamped with people demanding to be let off in NY. "We have to get home..." "It won't take 10 minutes just to let us off and you can head back out again..." "We're being held against our will...." "We're going to sue you for not letting us off..." etc., etc.. The list was endless. I thought it was hilarious. Most people were fine but there was a far higher than average number of whingers that we had to listen to until we eventually got off the ship on the following Friday.

She couldn't bear to be away from him. I asked her morose husband why he let her come and he just shrugged his shoulders and said that's just the way she is. I told him he better get her to stop her whine a minute diatribe or my dad would leave her at Avalon on Catalina when we get there in two hours. He brightened up and said "Really, do you think he will?" He did.

I've only ever been on one cruise but I heard two women moaning to each other about the fact that there were far too many children on the cruise. She didn't expect children to be everywhere (with the exception of the adults area which they both agreed was too small). Apparently children should be restricted to their cabins and the kids club and they just didn't expect to see so many kids on this cruise.

Regarding elevators/lifts going sideways along with deck, when you were talking about that I immediately thought of Star Trek where the elevators on the starships can go both up and down and sideways through the ships. Course, that’s set 300 years in the future! I personally enjoy walking the length of the ship. Especially if you do it up on the decks it is quite lovely.

I hate the "Don't go on this..." statements. Why? Well, we were on there and had a really rude waiter. So...like...don't go on that cruise because there's a rude waiter? Regarding lay-out, it's such a different story when you're solo. You're never in your own way. I've only been in one cruise but I don't know how two people would have made it around in that room. The one I heard was someone talking about pier runners. We had waited almost an hour and they were so ready to leave and the runners came up. I said that I was surprised they'd waited so long for them. A lady said "Well, they should give you warning." I said "I booked this 18 months ago, as far as I'm concerned, that's when the warning started."

We were on a small cruise line many years ago and we heard people complaining because they did not have ranch dressing. The food on this ship was fantastic and I just laughed because their complaint was no ranch dressing.

A lady on complained about the noise from the band in the lounge below her cabin and asked the ship to move it to another location or make the band stop when she was going to bed.

Call me a goof ball, but on one of my early cruises (I have been on about 24 now) I was in the elevator and said to the others in the elevator that it was so neat that we were in the "Sunday", elevator ... it was Sunday and the carpet in the elevators showed the days of the week. "Here's Your Sign" LOL

Perfume that he himself dragged in there. I am wondering if he dropped a bottle of perfume in the shop and stepped in it. Sunburn lady apparently baked her brain.

I was on a cruise ship and this couple was complaining that the microwave oven in their cabin was not working, the customer support lady asked where the microwave oven was located in their suit. and the customer support lady said. "madam, that would be the safe!"

About the sunburns, one of the things I discovered (WAAAY back) was just how much stronger the sun is down in the tropics! Surprised me!

Yes!!! We took a cruise to the Bahamas in 2018 and my son (who is naturally brown skinned) got fairly sunburned. He’s fine but he still has the ever so slight tan lines from that burn to this day!

I'm from Texas and the only time I've had serious allergic reactions to sunburns were both in Mexico (Cancun and Baja). It never occurred to me that just one country to the south would have a much higher UV. The second time I was only out in the sun without sunscreen on my legs an hour or two (because they could use a tan). They swelled up so huge the next day, and I wound up having to get a steroid shot when I got home. Always sunscreen anywhere remotely tropical!
