As for the m15/m17 they don't seem to want to send me one, I've been trying to get them since seeing them in June 2019 at Computex, weird that they stopped sending me stuff after I criticized the 51m 🤔
Here in Australia, unless Aftershock releases a laptop that is equivalent to MAX-15, Asus GX502GW seems like the only recommended choice if you want the Max-P 2070. That is, if you don't mind the massive amount of heat being produced from such a thin machine.

Do you usually type on the laptop keyboard? If not, do you stack a mechanical keyboard (I'm guessing any full size mech with mx brown switches is your preference?) on top of the laptop like in a Mono okito video (hhkb on macbook pro 13 inch)?
If I'm using a laptop I always just use the laptop keyboard, would be a different story if I only used a laptop full time, then I'd attach a good mech keyboard, but I use a desktop at home and only a laptop when travelling.

What are you using it for and what sort of specs are you after? For 1200 you can get a nice 1660 Ti/i7 laptop that will play all games like the Helios 300 from Acer or Lenovo Y540. I don't test any P stuff as they don't send me anything. Personally I'd probably go Acer or Lenovo over most of the MSI options I've tested at that price point.
I take multiple test runs and averages, but that's just to ensure there are no major changes. As I test the same parts of the game, redoing that same part is usually quite consistent, however that wasn't the case here

@@JarrodsTech Fair enough. Overall I'm looking at 1.9 for y540 i7 9750h 8gb ram and 1660ti 60hz screen. Expensive in my country, while Terra 15 is around 130 more for 16gb mem and 2060 144hz screen. But the abysmal battery life and iffy build quality is a concern since I'm using it for school too.
I reviewed this laptop (from Illegear, aka Quanta NLCA, also with 2070 GPU) last year and was not impressed with it: - Like all the new Quantas, they suffer from poor airflow - lifting the laptop is required. From my testing, you can gain a 9C temp drop by just lifting the laptop (raise 1-2cm will do). - Uneven core temp - more than 10C difference between the lowest core temp and highest core temp, I've even seen more than 20C difference in other units. Repaste doesn't help. - Auto fan curve is badly tuned - fans run slowly even when CPU hits 95C, and fans will not run any faster despite thermal throttling (clock speed and power draw will drop slowly). Same goes to GPU - fans will run slowly until GPU is heated up to 87C, after that fan speed will rise (quite loud, but not max fan). You can't manually change the fan curve which is a bummer. - CPU power capped at 62W max with the highest performance mode (High Performance) in CPU only load, even PL2 is 62W (considering no thermal throttling, which are the few seconds of a stress test). HWinfo64 will show higher power limits, but the CPU will never pull over 62W even under Aida64 FPU or some reason. And of course, it will thermal throttle shortly due to the silent fans. Worse still, you cannot override the power limits even with Throttlestop. - Very loud fans at max speed (only in the 2070 model, 1660Ti/2060 is fine), but I guess you can use headphones. The only appeal I see is the price. It's the cheapest, if not one of the cheaper 2070MP laptop in the market right now. Did you notice the same issues as above in your review unit? Would like to hear from you.
Yeah I noticed the same with the Aorus 15 last year, big gains just by raising it up and letting the fans breathe - thanks for sharing your results! I agree with what you're saying about the cheaper price. Yeah fans go from ok to way too loud with no in between in mine, didn't notice big temp variance. My CPU power limit reported as 70W but XTU reported PL throttle far before this was reached so not exactly sure.
Pretty sure the 2070 config is Max-Q too, could be wrong though. Not sure if you're asking which to pick out of the Terra 15 and Triton, or the Triton with those 2 GPU options? I think only the 2080 Triton has G-Sync and that will give you a nice +15% FPS boost.
Everything in Vietnam is expensive too, i bought the Helios 300 gtx 1660ti with 1550 usd. Sadly it only has 256gb SSD and 8gb ram so it costs me even more to get another ram stick and 1tb hdd. 💀💀💀
@@JarrodsTech Oof, Came from Vietnam too. To give you perspective. The Helios 300 on Amazon (USA) is 1200$ (around 27 million VND) but in Vietnam, freaking thing was above 35 million (somewhere around 1500 US). A whopping 10 million difference. So I was confusion for the first time as to how in the hell people keep calling this beast a "Budget" laptop.
I have experienced some smudging on the surface on my Terra 15. I agree that the keyboard isn't the best, and the lighting is actually pretty dim. I was kinda bummed that it only unlocks the full power graphics card when plugged in. The battery life was shockingly short, and CPU temps reached 90°C, even on low settings. On World of Tanks with High settings, it reached about 180-190fps. It was basically beautiful compared to the old PC I used to play on that could malfunction if you accidentally knee'd the table. On my experience there is no reason not to increase the video quality of your game settings as it reaches 90°C anyway. Now I rekt AWP players with the AUG with impunity.
Full power of the GPU when plugged in is the case with all gaming laptops, so you're not missing out on anything here, but yes battery life is on the lower side due to lack of Optimus.
@@tageato0179 I've never had a chance to fairly compare the two, sorry. In most games it will probably be fine, but some are starting to benefit from more cores and this will be the trend we see going forward.
I have the exact same laptop which i purchased 2 weeks ago. But the retailer is not aftershock, here in Malaysia there is a company called illegear who sell custom gaming laptop. I have to agree with u that this laptop is performing slower compared to let say ASUS or MSI with same hardware configuration..

Eg upgrading the ram to 32gb, undervolting + overclocking, etc. Im not very well versed with computer tech but i do love playing games..and to be able to squeeze out every single horsepower from a gaming device matters most of the time.. I sitting here thinking this laptop looks a lot like the Aorus 15. . .then you go and say the same thing. Lol. On the one hand that makes me disappointed in Gigabyte as I’m guessing that means they just put their logo on a laptop and didn’t design it. On the other I kinda like this design. So an improved and cheaper option is always nice. Though I don’t live in Australia so. . .shipping costs would probably be crazy sending it to the USA. 🤣 Now that sponsored bit was priceless. Yeah that must have been the case and I didn't realise at the time, as I guess quanta is a little less of a well known ODM compared to say Clevo/Tongfang so didn't recognize it as something standard. So found a fix for dell g7 myself Disabling Cpu hyperthreading cuts the heat by alot and some UV Is that settings common in laptop cpus or dell g7 is trash
I wouldn't personally do that, I'd keep the performance gains from HT and not worry about the extra heat myself (after some undervolting, maybe a stand of course). Dell machines typically have a higher 100c thermal throttle cap, so they may actually perform better as they can hit higher performance but at the cost of higher temps. Most other laptops cap the thermals to 90 or 95c.
In ur last vid, it showed that Helios 300 has better battery life than max 15 ... But in many videos it showed that Helios gives only about 2 hours.., so which actually lasts longer (by battery life I obviously mean putting it in low power mode and doing simple tasks)
You'll have to link me to the exact time stamps you're referring to, from memory the Helios was closer to 5 hours than 2.. sounds like a mistake, let me know (in a fresh comment, as TH-cam does not notify if you reply to this existing thread).

Weight wasn't too bad considering the specs, I'd want something with way better battery life if you're taking it to class though, without Optimus battery life is severely limited.
I am just curious, since almost all lappies have 2 fans, why manufacturers insist on heatpipe sharing instead of a one fan/heatpipe array for gpu and another for cpu design. I don't get it. Maybe I am missing something here. This is a complete POS btw, and not worth the price saving over the mag15 whatsoever.

If they're the same price, go for the Nitro 7. It has the better CPU and even if it's not undervolted (like the Helios), you could still do that yourself manually.
Oh, the option for the RTX 2070 was a limited run. I have contacted AfterShock directly and I am lucky enough to get my Terra 15 with an RTX 2070. It is due to the coronavirus causing GPU and computer parts shortages in general.

@@JarrodsTech I have an MSI laptop (GL72VR) with 7700hq and with - 0.15 undervolt the max I can reach is 80-82 under severe load. So I would have assumed the TDP would have gotten better with newer Intel CPUs. Intel has really stagnated. Oh well.. Not saying 85 is bad but it's too close to 90 (which is really bad IMO). I am actually surprised how well Nvidia's GPUs scale down in laptops just by slightly underclocking their desktop chips. The gpu temps are never an issue (for me at least) and you get very close to desktop performance.

I'd go Y540 assuming same specs. Has the option to disable optimus so you have the option of better battery life, and better software experience.
@@JarrodsTech Fair enough. Overall I'm looking at 1.9 for y540 i7 9750h 8gb ram and 1660ti 60hz screen. Expensive in my country, while Terra 15 is around 130 more for 16gb mem and 2060 144hz screen. But the abysmal battery life and iffy build quality is a concern since I'm using it for school too.

I reviewed this laptop (from Illegear, aka Quanta NLCA, also with 2070 GPU) last year and was not impressed with it:
- Like all the new Quantas, they suffer from poor airflow - lifting the laptop is required. From my testing, you can gain a 9C temp drop by just lifting the laptop (raise 1-2cm will do).
- Uneven core temp - more than 10C difference between the lowest core temp and highest core temp, I've even seen more than 20C difference in other units. Repaste doesn't help.
- Auto fan curve is badly tuned - fans run slowly even when CPU hits 95C, and fans will not run any faster despite thermal throttling (clock speed and power draw will drop slowly). Same goes to GPU - fans will run slowly until GPU is heated up to 87C, after that fan speed will rise (quite loud, but not max fan). You can't manually change the fan curve which is a bummer.
- CPU power capped at 62W max with the highest performance mode (High Performance) in CPU only load, even PL2 is 62W (considering no thermal throttling, which are the few seconds of a stress test). HWinfo64 will show higher power limits, but the CPU will never pull over 62W even under Aida64 FPU or some reason. And of course, it will thermal throttle shortly due to the silent fans. Worse still, you cannot override the power limits even with Throttlestop.
- Very loud fans at max speed (only in the 2070 model, 1660Ti/2060 is fine), but I guess you can use headphones.
The only appeal I see is the price. It's the cheapest, if not one of the cheaper 2070MP laptop in the market right now. Did you notice the same issues as above in your review unit? Would like to hear from you.
Yeah I noticed the same with the Aorus 15 last year, big gains just by raising it up and letting the fans breathe - thanks for sharing your results! I agree with what you're saying about the cheaper price. Yeah fans go from ok to way too loud with no in between in mine, didn't notice big temp variance. My CPU power limit reported as 70W but XTU reported PL throttle far before this was reached so not exactly sure.

Pretty sure the 2070 config is Max-Q too, could be wrong though. Not sure if you're asking which to pick out of the Terra 15 and Triton, or the Triton with those 2 GPU options? I think only the 2080 Triton has G-Sync and that will give you a nice +15% FPS boost.

I'd get the Zephyrus personally, more polished software experience and build quality, plus you get a nice performance boost as Gsync bypasses Optimus

The Helios 300 on Amazon (USA) is 1200$ (around 27 million VND) but in Vietnam, freaking thing was above 35 million (somewhere around 1500 US). A whopping 10 million difference. So I was confusion for the first time as to how in the hell people keep calling this beast a "Budget" laptop.
I have experienced some smudging on the surface on my Terra 15.
I agree that the keyboard isn't the best, and the lighting is actually pretty dim.
I was kinda bummed that it only unlocks the full power graphics card when plugged in.
The battery life was shockingly short, and CPU temps reached 90°C, even on low settings.
On World of Tanks with High settings, it reached about 180-190fps. It was basically beautiful compared to the old PC I used to play on that could malfunction if you accidentally knee'd the table.
On my experience there is no reason not to increase the video quality of your game settings as it reaches 90°C anyway.
Now I rekt AWP players with the AUG with impunity.
Full power of the GPU when plugged in is the case with all gaming laptops, so you're not missing out on anything here, but yes battery life is on the lower side due to lack of Optimus.

To me, both are ok/average/fine, I'd probably pick the Scar out of the two but at the same time probably wouldn't get either.
I have the exact same laptop which i purchased 2 weeks ago. But the retailer is not aftershock, here in Malaysia there is a company called illegear who sell custom gaming laptop. I have to agree with u that this laptop is performing slower compared to let say ASUS or MSI with same hardware configuration..

Yeah that must have been the case and I didn't realise at the time, as I guess quanta is a little less of a well known ODM compared to say Clevo/Tongfang so didn't recognize it as something standard. So found a fix for dell g7 myself
Disabling Cpu hyperthreading cuts the heat by alot and some UV
Is that settings common in laptop cpus or dell g7 is trash
I wouldn't personally do that, I'd keep the performance gains from HT and not worry about the extra heat myself (after some undervolting, maybe a stand of course). Dell machines typically have a higher 100c thermal throttle cap, so they may actually perform better as they can hit higher performance but at the cost of higher temps. Most other laptops cap the thermals to 90 or 95c.

Maybe, depends how much power you're after. The 2080 model does also have G-Sync which is about a +15% performance boost too.

In ur last vid, it showed that Helios 300 has better battery life than max 15 ... But in many videos it showed that Helios gives only about 2 hours.., so which actually lasts longer (by battery life I obviously mean putting it in low power mode and doing simple tasks)

Apex is a tongfang chassis, this is by Quanta, the tongfang one has a nicer overall finish/features in my personal opinion.
How do u remove the Terra back case? I remove all screws can't get the back case open.
The process is noted in the video at 6:28 from memory there was nothing else to do, you might just have to pry around the edges more.

Yes, max-q depends on the power limit, so far I've seen 80w, 90w, and 100w variants whereas Max-P is 115w

Weight wasn't too bad considering the specs, I'd want something with way better battery life if you're taking it to class though, without Optimus battery life is severely limited.
Alpha-X a much, much better buy, with great thermals. That's if you are happy with a 2060.. Most would be.
I am just curious, since almost all lappies have 2 fans, why manufacturers insist on heatpipe sharing instead of a one fan/heatpipe array for gpu and another for cpu design. I don't get it. Maybe I am missing something here. This is a complete POS btw, and not worth the price saving over the mag15 whatsoever.

If they're the same price, go for the Nitro 7. It has the better CPU and even if it's not undervolted (like the Helios), you could still do that yourself manually.

Oh, the option for the RTX 2070 was a limited run. I have contacted AfterShock directly and I am lucky enough to get my Terra 15 with an RTX 2070.
It is due to the coronavirus causing GPU and computer parts shortages in general.

@@JarrodsTech I have an MSI laptop (GL72VR) with 7700hq and with - 0.15 undervolt the max I can reach is 80-82 under severe load. So I would have assumed the TDP would have gotten better with newer Intel CPUs. Intel has really stagnated. Oh well..
Not saying 85 is bad but it's too close to 90 (which is really bad IMO). I am actually surprised how well Nvidia's GPUs scale down in laptops just by slightly underclocking their desktop chips. The gpu temps are never an issue (for me at least) and you get very close to desktop performance.
Things got much hotter with more cores in 8th and 9th gen
