11:50 An unassisted triple play is one of the rarest feats in baseball. Each team has 3 outs during their half of the inning, and this fielder recorded all three outs in one play with no one from his team helping him. It was also the final 3 outs of the game. First he caught the fly ball for the initial out. Then he stepped on second base, because the second base runner advanced before the ball was caught. Then he tagged the runner that was advancing from first to second base before that runner could retreat back to first base.

Here's what happened at the 12 minute mark:
If a ball is hit in the air the runner must wait until after the catch is made to advance. So, in other words, they have to stay on the base. In this particular play, the ball was hit right at the fielder, who catches it for the first out. The runner who had been on second base wasn't expecting the ball to be caught, so he took off for third. Unfortunately for him he was mistaken, and he was considered out as soon as the fielder stepped on second base. Likewise, the runner on first base expected the ball to land on the ground, so he was tagged for the third and final out of the inning.

To help simplify baseball, it's basically a series of one-on-one matchups between pitcher and hitter. The pitcher's job is to get outs through multiple different ways, such as him or his other teammates catching the ball in the air, throwing it to the base the hitter is running to, or just straight up throwing it past him. Meanwhile it's a hitters job to hit the ball as far as possible and run around the three bases and touch home again, at which point he scores a run. After one side gets three outs, the hitter/offense and pitcher/defense switch sides, and after doing that 9 times, you've got a full game. Of course its more complex than that, as pitchers will often vary speeds, locations and movements with their throws to mess with the hitters, fielders will position themselves where they think the ball will be hit, and so on.
    Some more quick things:
    - Each team has nine players active at a time, with them taking specific positions on the field during one half of the inning (three outfielders, four infielders, a pitcher and a catcher), while those nine players bat in a predetermined order in the other half - well, eight, since MLB allows teams to have a designated hitter whose only job is to hit (no fielding) in the pitcher's spot.
    - Every field's dimensions are different in how much fair and foul ground they have, so it truly can affect the game just as much as the players themselves on the field. Regardless, any ball hit outside of the field of play within the foul poles is a home run and everyone on base can run home along with the home run hitter, hence the name. Other kinds of hits are named after how many bases a player takes (single means one, double means two, triple means three)
    - Each pitch not hit into the field of play is either a ball or strike. A strike is a pitch that based on its location is theorized as hittable, meaning even faraway balls that have foul contact are still strikes (though a foul ball can never be a third strike). A ball is a pitch that the umpire determines is too far away/close/high/low to hit, and four of these lets the player automatically take a base, so that the hitter has a reasonable chance to get a hit.
    - A steal is when a player between pitches can try to take an extra base - of course, the difficulty being that unless it's well timed and the player is fast, it'll be extremely easy to spot and throw him out. So it's a big risk that can pay off if you're good with timing and have elite speed as a runner.
    - Baseball has the longest season of any major sport, with 162 games spanning between April and September. The winner of each 5 team division, plus the next best three teams in each league face off in playoffs, wherein the winning team in each league face each other in the World Series, to determine a champion. This all takes place in the month of October and is some of the most exciting sports anywhere in the world.

In regards to the triple play, It only works if two players are already on base. The first out was the catch. The fielder touched 2nd base before the man returned(out 2), then tagged the man trying to reach 2nd physically(yer out 3).

Three outs in three seconds was an ultra rare moment. The second baseman caught a ball in flight while standing on second base. The catch is out one, stepping on second base before the runner that started there does is out two. Then he tags the runner from first base for an unassisted triple play.

11:23 It was the 9th inning, basically like the 4th quarter, and the Mets had guys on 2nd and 1st. The batter hit a line drive to the 2nd baseman, so runners were moving, but when the 2B caught the line drive in mid-air, the runners have to retreat to their base. So after the 2nd Basemen caught the ball it's an out, then tagged the 2B bag to get the runner that was formerly there is now out, and then he tagged the guy advancing from 1st(should've been retreating to 1B as well) thus making him the 3rd out. With it be a triple play out and in the 9th inning it ended the game.

1:50 A long time ago, pitchers were allowed to really make the balls a mess, because that allowed them to throw crazy pitches. One consequence of that is that batters couldn't always see the ball, and they didn't have helmets either. So one time a fastball hit a batter in the head, he never saw it coming, and he later died from the injury. Ever since, if a pitcher throws a ball with anything on it other than rosin, he's going to be thrown out of the game.

@11:58 we see the guy catching the ball from the hitter. That means the hitter is "out" of play. Now when the hitter hit the ball the guy on second base (where we see the guy catch the ball) took off running to third base. The guy on first base starting running for second base, Once the player has the ball notice as he comes forward he steps on the second base. That means the guy who was there and left for 3rd base is now "out" of play. Now he starts to try and tag the guy running to 2nd from first and when he does he is now "out" of play. That is the required 3 outs to end the inning and now the go in to take their turn hitting the ball to try and sore points.

  • @noahwatches
    @noahwatches 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Baseball is a game where you score “runs” (points) by making around the bases (1st, 2nd, 3rd, back to home) without getting tagged (touched) with the ball. The runner is “safe” (can’t be tagged) when they are touching a base. You must run bases in order. No going backwards. You can get on first base if the ball is hit and is not caught or if the pitcher throws 4 balls (throws the ball outside of the strike zone). If a defensive player has the ball and is touching the base you are forced to run to then you are out. Once on base you may run but unless the batter hit the ball you will likely be tagged out. Stealing is when the runner runs to the next base during the pitch. (A very small window when the ball is not in control of the defense): Also, when a ball is hit in the air and caught runners must return to the base they were at when the caught ball was hit before they can advance/run.

One rule that's essential that it seems like you don't fully understand is how the runners move once they are on base. In order to understand that you have to understand how you can get out. The main ways are:
    - a strikeout (3 pitches that you either swung and missed at or you chose not to swing at when they were good pitches)
    - a flyout or lineout which are when you hit the ball and it's caught before touching the ground
    - a force out which is when the batter is forced to go to a certain base and the fielder with the ball touches the base before them
    - a tag out which occurs when the fielder tags the runner with the ball or his glove holding the ball while the player isn't touching a base and can happen at any time
There's other ways to get out but they are more like yellow cards in soccer where it's a penalty for violating a rule and aren't very common.
To elaborate on a force out, you also need to understand when a runner is forced to go to a base.
    - When you hit the ball you are always forced to run to first, meaning that the defense doesn't have to worry about tagging you until you have reached first base, they can just throw it to the firstbaseman and he can touch the base with his foot before you get there to get you out.
    - If there is a runner on first when you hit the ball they are also forced to run to second since the batter is forced to take first from him. This is the case whenever every base before you is occupied by a runner (runners on 1st and 2nd as well as runners on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd).
    - If you hit the ball and it is caught before bouncing, all runners are forced to touch the base they started on before advancing. So if someone hits the ball straight up and it only goes a few meters forward the runners already on base can't run because they will have to return to their base before advancing when it is caught. In the triple play clip, the first out was a catch and the second out was him touching second before the runner had time to return back to the base. This can also lead to what is called a sacrafice fly, meaning that the batter hits the ball far enough that the runners have time to return to their base, wait for the ball to be caught, and then start running.
    - If there is a runner on second and first base is empty then the runner on second is no longer forced to run when the ball is hit so they must be tagged out. This is also true for a lone runner on third or runners on second and third. If there is a runner on first and third the runner on first is forced to advance but the runner on third isn't.
I know it all sounds complicated but once you understand this specifically the whole sport becomes much simpler to understand.

  • @AaronSiganoff
    @AaronSiganoff 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

If you catch the ball before it hits the ground- the batter is out. 1 out. The runners were already running before he caught the ball, though- so he tags a BASE to "force" out the runner on second, and tags the runner on his way to 2nd base

A stolen base occurs when you are on base at the start of a pitch and you run to the next base before the pitcher can deliver the ball and the catcher can throw it to the base to which you're trying to advance. It moves a baserunner into scoring position meaning a subsequent single can possibly move him to home.

In baseball there are at least 4 umpires, the baseball equivalent to a referee, one behindthe catcher and batter, one by first base, one by second base, and one by third base. The umpires by 1st, 2nd, and 3rd base are the ones who call the runners out or safe; safe meaning the runner had touched the base before the ball was caught by the baseman (the baseman has to be touching the bag as well in order for the runner to be out); and out means the opposite, so the ball was thrown to and caught by the baseman before the runner made it to the base, alternatively any fielder with the ball in hand/glove can tag the runner with the ball and get them out that way.

Every pitch from the pitcher to the batter is a duel, a chess game as you said. Every pitch is thrown with a purpose to a specific location nearest the strike zone but away from the batter's "sweet spot" The batter has to calculate and predict the type of pitch, it's location. and the pitch count against him. The batter also needs to consider the situation on the field ( men on base, number of outs, where to hit the ball on the field. The batter has less than a second to decide to swing or allow the ball to pass if it's outside the strike zone.

In the triple play, the rule is that if one of the fielders catches the ball in the air, it’s an out. Now it gets complicated. The rule is in baseball that if a ball is caught in the air, and a player wants to advance from his base, he has to wait until the ball is caught to run to the next base. He thought that this ball would drop, so he ran to the next base without tagging up. Because of that, the player who has the ball can touch the base that the runner started on (which he did with his foot). He also could have tagged the runner with the hand that had the ball, but he didn’t do it for the runner on second, because he was too far away, so he just decided to touch the base. For the runner on first base, that was running to second, he was right next to the player who caught the ball and tagged the base for two outs, so he just tagged the runner who was running to second base, for three outs. Hope this helps.

  • @marcjsolis
    @marcjsolis 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

About the triple play: the player caught a fly ball that hasn’t hit the ground. When a fielder catches a fly ball, all runners on base must retouch the base they previously occupied at the beginning of the play. If the ball beats the runner back to his base, the runner is out. And any time a runner is not standing on his base he can be tagged out. The fielder managed to do all three of these and obtain three outs in one play.

TLDR version: First out was catching the ball. Second out was stepping on the base. The third out is tagging the base runner. There was a base runner on second base that had taken off to third base. If you try to steal a base but the ball is caught from a batter's hit then you have to go back to the previous base before getting tagged or the fielder catches the ball and steps on the base. Stealing a base is just trying to advance to the next base without getting out.

In the rules, if you catch the ball mid air and there are runners on base, every runner has to go back to the base they where in or else they will be out. Wich is what happend in the clip you saw.

You would think that the hardest hitters had to be the biggest and strongest, using a heavy bat. Babe Ruth was the prime exemplar of the type. But in the 1970s, the philosophy began to change. The new idea was that the main factor was the speed of the bat. (It was sort of like a golfer hitting a drive, but horizontally.) After that, players began to use a much lighter bat, because it would accelerate faster than a heavy bat. Also, a player did not need to "power" the bat, but to swing it in a relaxed manner. The first major-league hitter to set new records using the new method was George Brett of the Kansas City Royals, who in 1980 became the best since Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox, in 1941. The hitting coach who first thought of that approach and helped George Brett put the new method into practice was the great Charlie Lau (the name is pronounced as in German).

As a fan of baseball, soccer, and American football, I believe supporters of these sports can appreciate baseball too.
Baseball games typically last around 2.5 hours, shorter than the often 3-3.5 hour football games, yet both have a similar number of scoring plays. Soccer matches, while lasting about 2 hours, usually feature only 1-3 goals. Therefore, baseball generally has more runs scored.
However, baseball can be less visually engaging on TV. While in-person games offer a richer experience, home viewers mainly see the pitcher and hitter, missing the action of baserunners and fielders. As a result, judging baseball based solely on its TV presentation doesn't fully represent the sport.

The triple play video: bases were loaded. Runners can lead off the base before the pitcher throws at the risk of being picked off or (in this instance) the batter hitting a hard line drive directly at someone leaving the runners with no time to react.
When leading off a base as a runner, it gives you a few steps advantage on steals or base hits. However, if the ball is caught BEFORE IT HITS THE GROUND, the runners HAVE to retouch the base they started at BEFORE the pitch throws was thrown before a fielder (with the ball) touches said base.
So what happened was the batter hit a line drive directly at the 2nd baseman. The runner on second was leading with the pitch and was immediately out as soon as the 2nd baseman touched the base since he had just caught the ball (2 outs). The last runner who was moving with the pitch, is tagged out from being severely out of position and realizing there’s nothing he can do. The fielder could have also just thrown the ball back to first for the same result.

It does seem boring at times, but bearing in mind that hitting a spherical ball with a round bat and getting to to go anywhere useful is genuinely one of the hardest things in sports, and that's if you hit it all. 30% hit rate is considered good. Everything is pretty slow until an actual hit happens...

Okay so on the triple play what happened was there was a runner on first and second. The batter then hit a line drive (ball in the air, never touched the ground) the fielder caught it making the batter the first out. The runners are first and second who started advancing bases once the ball was hit now have to run back to the previous base before the fielder can touch the base while holding the ball (that’s what happened at 2nd base thus creating the second out) or before the fielder tags the player which is what happened at the end when he tagged him making the 3rd and final out. Even if he didn’t tag the last guy he could’ve thrown it to the first baseman and the first baseman could’ve tagged his base and the guy would still be out because he was basically at second he wasn’t going to make it back to first in time
Sorry it’s so long I tried to make it as simple as possible

A batter gets a hit he gets on base. He's now a base runner. Normally he's on base until the next batter gets a hit. But he can try to steal a base before hand. The runner will get a good lead towards the next base. But not to far or the pitcher can catch him off base and throw him out. But if he gets a good enough lead and takes off when the pitcher throws to the batter. If the catcher can grab it and throw him out at next base he's out. But if the runner makes it to the base safely it's a stolen base.

You seem to have at least a basic idea of the rules. A short (well, short-ish) summary:
    - The pitcher throws the ball to home plate and the batter tries to hit it.
    - If the batter doesn't swing and the pitch is outside the "strike zone" (roughly chest to knee height, over the plate), it is a "ball". Four balls is a "walk", and the batter gets to go to first base for free. A ball that hits the batter also allows the batter to go to first base ("hit by pitch").
    - If the batter swings and misses, or doesn't swing but the pitch is inside the strike zone, it is a "strike". Three strikes and you're out (a "strikeout"). If he just barely makes contact and it goes directly to the catcher, that's also a strike (a "foul tip").
    - If the batter hits the ball outside of the 90 degree forward arc (marked by the base lines) and it's not caught, it is a "foul ball". It is dead and runners must return to their bases. That counts as a strike unless it would be the third strike.
    - If the batter hits the ball inside that forward arc (a "fair ball") and it's not caught, he must attempt to run at least to first base.
    - "Fair" or "foul" is decided when the ball is first touched (or comes to a stop), when it first lands if beyond first or third base, or when it passes first or third base if it landed short of there. Hence the action at 10:30 in the video where the fielding team knows they won't be able to get an out if the ball is fair, so they want it to be foul. (Though I suspect if the umpires really wanted to, they could rule that blowing on the ball to make it change direction counts as touching it.)
    - A run is scored if a runner makes it to first base, then second, then third, and then touches home plate.
    - Runners can stop on a base and try to advance further on the next hit, but they can't share a base or pass each other. A runner who starts on first base is forced to try to reach second, in order to make room for the batter at first base. A runner who starts on second is only forced if there was a runner on first (who himself is forced); if not, the runner on second can choose to stay there since there's already room for the batter. Similarly, a runner on third is only forced if there are runners on both first and second as well.
    - A runner who is forced to advance can be "forced out" by a fielder touching the base they are advancing to while holding the ball before the runner gets there. Any runner, whether forced to advance or not, may be "tagged out" by a fielder touching them with the ball (or the glove holding it) while the runner is not on a base.
    - If the batter hits the ball and it's caught (other than a foul tip), he's out (variously referred to as a "fly out", "pop out", "line out", or "foul out", depending on the trajectory of the hit, but all of those mean a catch). Runners must return to their original base and can be put out in the same manner as a force out at that base if they do not get back quickly enough. However, they may attempt to advance ("tag up") after returning to their original base.
    - A fair ball hit over the fence on the fly is a "home run"; the batter and all runners score. If it bounces over the fence or otherwise leaves play, it's a "ground rule double"; the batter and all runners advance two bases (from the start of the play).
    - The ball does not become dead on an out; multiple outs on the same hit are possible if there are runners on base. The most common way for a "double play" (two outs on one play) to happen is a ground ball hit up the middle; a fielder throws to second base to force out the runner on first, then that fielder throws to first base to force out the batter. At 11:30 in the video is an "unassisted triple play" - the runners were attempting to steal (see below), the fielder makes the catch (first out), touches second base to get the lead runner (who did not return to second base in time) out (second out), then tags the trailing runner out (third out).
    - The ball is also not dead between pitches; runners can attempt to "steal" a base during the pitch. They are at risk of being tagged out while doing so (and if they start too early, the pitcher may try to get them out rather than throwing a pitch; this situation is referred to as being "picked off").
    - Three outs ends the inning; the batting team's next inning will start with the next batter in rotation (it's a fixed order set at the start of the game). Runners on base do not carry over between innings.
    - Each team gets nine innings at bat, with the visiting team batting first. Most runs wins. (The home team's 9th inning may be cut short or omitted entirely if they're already ahead.) Extra innings are played to break ties.
16:45 - yes, the New York Giants are a football team. The baseball team they were showing is the San Francisco Giants.

The triple play to end the game was he caught the batter out by catching it before it hit the ground when this happens the runners need to go back to the base they were on before the hit. Since he caught it on 2nd base before the runner going to third could get back to second base and the runner he tagged with the ball and glove needed to get back to first to be safe, so he was the 3rd out.

The Triple Play. You mentioned tag. The defensive player must have possession of the ball. He can stand on the base with it to get the runner out. He can also touch the runner to get them out.
The play with the guy blowing on the ball. He is trying to make the ball go out of bounds. That means it's a foul ball

At 12:00 of your video, there was nobody out and runners on first and second. The batter hit the ball and the second baseman caught the ball for the first out. He touched second base before the runner from second could get back, that's the second out. Then, the touched the runner coming from first for the third out. That's called a triple play, making three outs on the same play. More than that, it was an unassisted triple play, meaning one fielder made all three outs, extremely rare. In fact, I think that was the last one made in MLB back in 2009. He could have thrown the ball to first to get the third out but that would not have been unassisted. Since this was the ninth inning and the Phillies ahead, the game was over.

The basics of baseball are obviously score more runs than the other team. But with in that its pitcher throws ball to catcher trying to get the batter out, batters gets out by striking out, grounding out or flying out to a fielder. Once 3 outs are record the teams switch up and the other team takes the field while the opposing team bats. For the team hitting the objective is to reach base via a hit or drawing a walk and then be brought home by a
teammate. There’s obviously more to it but that’s the basic overview of baseball.

The large majority of overweight players in MLB history were either pitchers (they don't run around much and don't focus on hitting, nowadays they don't hit at all), or designated hitters (they don't play defense, instead they only hit and try to hit for power/homeruns as generally they're slow as shit).

  • @TheMattJacks
    @TheMattJacks 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

American Football is Checkers. Baseball is 4D Chess. It is ALL mind games, setups, deception, planning, scouting, every pitcher KNOWS every hitter. The Catcher (behind the plate,) needs to take pitches borderline IN the strike zone, catch it, and hopefully move their glove into the zone so fast, the umpire sees a strike on a ball that may be a BALL (Non-Strike Pitch.) You get 3 strikes per batter. 4 bad pitches NOT swung at gives you 1st base free. The pitchers who start the game are limited (not by rule,) to around 100 pitches. Some guys are so good at contact, they make a Pitcher throw 10-15 pitches against the 100 by just fouling off pitches, taking BALLS, and then you get into their secondary pitching corps (Relief Pitchers,) who usually go 1 inning (3 outs) each. Then, if there is a lead of 3 runs or less, a CLOSER comes in for the last inning. This is typically the teams best pitcher, who comes in to SHUT IT DOWN. It is called a Save, when sucessful. A Closer is doing well if they get 35-40 saves in 162 games.

There are 3 sports movies about baseball from different aspects that can explain the hold the game has on many Americans.
The first one is Field of Dreams. The film is very spiritual and full of mystery. It's how generations of families are bound together by baseball.
The Natural is about a ballplayer who's career is over before it starts due to a tragic event. Years later, he tries to play again. The story plays out as a heroic tale of almost Arthurian legend.
The last is called Bull Durham. A story about the players that toil in the obscurity of playing in the minor leagues. The players in the minors are a combination of future major league stars, future fringe major leaguers, and players that will never see their dream come true. It shows the joy of youthful hope and the torture and bitterness of disappointment. All in a very funny way.

Since you are new to the sport, a little baseball lesson on the basics of the game. it will help you understand it. The simplest undestanding is you must hit the ball and try to run around the bases alla t once or as a result of other people hitting the ball in order to score. But it is a little more complicated than that in reality.
First, the pitcher is thorwing pitches with all sorts of speeds and movements to try to get you out. You must hit the ball in the field of play in "fair territory" between first base and third base (a 90 degree angle) in order to have the opportunity to advance around the bases as a batter. Upon doing so you will try to run around as many bases as possible but ususally you pick up one base (a single). Two bases are called a double, three bases are called a triple, and four bases are called a home run. If you maek it to a base a player batting after you can advance you by getting a hit or even an out that gives you time to advance to the next base within the rules.
The parts of the field outside fair territory area are called "foul territory" where a ball is only partially in play. By that I mean a ball that you hit can be caught in the air for an out but if it hits the ground in foul territory it is simpy a foul ball and the batter gets to receive another pitch from the pithcer.
The distance between the bases is 90 feet. To get a hit you must hit the ball and advance to first base without someone catching the ball, tagging the base before you arrive, or touching you with the ball (tagging you out). You must round all the based and come back to home plate to score a point which is called "a run."
If you hit the ball in the air and someone catches the ball before it hits the ground anywhere on the field (including foul territory) you're out.
If you swing and miss it is called a strike. If you don't swing at a pitch that is in the "strike zone" (an area above home plate between the arm pits and knees of he batter), that is also a strike. If you hit a ball on the ground or in the air into foul territory (called fouling off a pitch) it is a strike except on what would otherwise be a third strike. So any combination of swinging and missing, not swinging at a strike, or hitting a ball into foul territory is a strike. Three strikes and you're "out" which means you have to sit down and wait to bat until the entire team bats (nine players) on each team).
If a pitcher throws the ball and it is not in the strike zone, and a batter does not swing at it, it is called a "ball" rather than a strike. If a batter gets four balls he can advnace to first base. So four balls are good for a batter and bad for a pticher. Three strikes are bad for th batter and good for the pitcher.
Three outs ends your team's turn at bat and allows the other team to bat. When both teams have batted to three outs it is called an "Inning". There are 9 innings in a game unless there is a tie. The winner is the team ahead at the end of nine innings. In a typical game most players end up batting about four times.
There are nine players on defense in the field and one batter on offense in the battes box. The nine players are the pitcher, catcher, first baseman, second baseman, short stop, and third baseman in the infield around the bases and the right fielder, left fielder, and center fielder in the outfield between the bases and outer wall of the field. All infields are identical, but the outfields vary in size and shape depending on the location.
The catches you are seeing prevent scores from happening with people on base.
